Beth Israel Youth Bulletin April-May Edmonton NCSY Shabbaton! Recap from last two months Following December break we jumped into NCSY s highlight of the year: the Shabbaton! The weekend was a great success and a great time was had by all! Thank you to all the incredible advisors who brought the party to Edmonton! Thank you to all the families that hosted teens and staff, all the parents who helped drive Saturday night and to all of Edmonton NCSY who made the Shabbaton incredible! From the decorating committee (who stayed in the Shul for hours Thursday night making the Shul look amazing), the teens who went out to update our game collection -( thank you Naama Or for leading that!), the teens that organized and led the icebreakers, and for all the ruach that everyone brought - it was an amazing weekend! A huge thank you to Shayna Segal who helped with the planning, organizing and running of the weekend!
Finally a big thank you to the Ghermezian family, without whom this weekend could not have been possible! We had Latte n Learn as usual with special guest speakers David Rosen, Rabbi Becker and NCSY alum Itai Wine! 2
In February we had a special visit from Leib Irons (Toronto NCSY) who gave a Lunch and Learn/info session in Shep, about NCSY Summer Programs. That session was followed by an evening info session for parents/teens hosted by the Allens. 3
A special thank you Daniel Kaplan who organized a NCSY Give event at the Food Bank. 4
Thank you to all who came out NCSY/BBYO running the concession stand at Festival Hatzafon! 5
Youth Recap: In Pizza and Parsha, as usual, we have been getting very crafty. 6
In January we learned about the makot in the parsha and painted what we thought they would look like. We made Challah for Rosh Chodesh and planted our own seeds for Tu B shvat! Amongst the many experiments and crafts we did based on the parsha, we made extract! We learned about the incense made in the Mishkan. We learned about the different spices used and how the smell of the incense was a very strong smell. Since we also learned we cannot replicate the incense made in the Mishkan, we made fruit extract instead, which has a beautiful scent and will be tasty in recipes! 7
Purim time at BI was a lot of fun! The BI Youth spent a Pizza and Parsha class helping to package the baskets and made hamentaschen for Purim!. We also enjoyed the Pre Purim Pep Up before the nighttime megillah reading on Purim, which started off a fun filled 24 hours! A big thank you to Millie Friedman, Joey Friedman, Jamie Ana Friedman, Ella Bracha Friedman, Shira Tankel, Gabriella Tankel and Sarah Lallouz, Naama Or, and Rachelli Cohen who helped package Mishloach Manot this year! Thank you to all who made phone calls: Sarah Lallouz, Simona Hagag, Jakob Allen, Mikah Allen, Ruthy Allen, Shlomo Allouche, Nathan Campbell, Noah Campbell, Julien Katzenmaier, Posy Johnston, Ethan Buck, Steven Uram, Shira Gabriel, Shoshy Bernstein and Ryan Gabriel! 8
