Fear often takes hold of us, and we find ourselves making excuses for why it is better to just mind our own business. There is a voice within each of us that is saying, "Follow me". What does this prompting mean? The purpose of discipleship is not to secure our own station in life and enhance our comfort zone. Discipleship is about taking risks and venturing forth into the unknown, tending to the needs of others and being prophetic voices of change. We will not drink deeply of life until we listen to the voice of God within. When God asks, "Whom shall I send?", will you reply, "Here I am? send me!"? PASTORAL STAFF Reverend Quy N. THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 10, 2019 GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCRIPTURE. Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, income, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life. That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking." What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God? You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship? THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today s Scripture readings can be found in the GIA Hymnal number 1106 Our Prayer s response is: Jesus, Son of God, hear us WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: What kind of religious practices should we begin, once we marry, to help us practice our faith each day? Answer: Your spiritual life as a couple is important. The sacrament of Marriage is a gift and a grace, but living it well isn't always easy! It requires intentionality and perseverance. Growing your spiritual life as a couple also requires a plan. Life can be incredibly busy. There's never "enough time" for everything we want to do. But we can live by our priorities. If we don't prioritize prayer, we'll find it slowly disappear from our lives.if you're not already praying individually, that's a good place to start. If your schedules are similar, take some quiet time at the same time to help hold each other accountable. Praying together is also important! You could start by looking at the religious practices of your family and of families around you that you respect. Talk with your spouse about the ones who make the deepest impression on you or were most meaningful when you were young. Think about what you want your future children to experience. Making faith a commitment now will mean it is engrained habit when you grow your family. Ultimately, these faith practices should help us grow in our love for God and for one another. Practice makes perfect. - Join us as we welcome back Dave Barosci who will help us make Lent more meaningful with his talk Don t Just Do Lent, Practice Lent. Dave, a national speaker for over 15 years, gives a unique perspective on Lent. His approach to Lent is to look at many different ways that you can practice virtues. One would expect to hear about practicing the virtue of love and thus, that is part of his presentation. But he also challenges us to think outside the box in practicing virtue. Imagine practicing confrontation. While that may sound like something to avoid, it may be needed at the appropriate times. Join us on Thursday, March 7th at 11 AM as we learn more about these unique practices and enjoy lunch afterwards. If interested contact Michele at 315-735-6210. The cost is $12 or for 1992 Society member, $10. Please register by February 28th. For more information please visit our website at www.thegoodnewscenter.org. Then the Lord freed him from his sin, and he was open to do God's will. How would you describe your spiritual disposition after reconciliation with the Lord? Second Reading Paul reports to the Corinthians of the many people to whom Jesus revealed himself after he rose from the dead. Paul includes himself on that list, speaking frequently of God's grace. Where do you see God's grace in your life? Gospel Reading Luke offers us a lot of insights into the personality of Peter with his account of Jesus' call of the first disciples. What do we know about Peter based on this call narrative? SEASONAL REFLECTION: Sts. Cyril & Methodius These brothers by birth became brothers in mission. Cyril and Methodius were born to a Greek diplomat in the 800s. The two brothers served in local governmental posts before each withdrew to a monastery. Their lives changed when the political leadership in Eastern Europe - what is now Ukraine - requested priests who spoke the native Slavic languages. Cyril and Methodius had proven themselves as able administrators and holy men, so they were sent as missionaries. First, Cyril invented an alphabet. This became the foundation for what is now used today and is still called the Cyrillic alphabet! Next, the brothers translated the Gospels, the Psalms, and other liturgical books into the native language of the people. Their work spread across Eastern Europe. God indeed raises up saints for their times!

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS: Have you ever participated in various trust exercises, where you have to place your faith in others around you? Maybe it was falling backwards with your eyes closed while the person's voice speaking to you seemed to drift further away. Maybe it was jumping from a height into people's arms that didn't seem strong enough to catch you. These activities were supposed to show you the meaning of trust and help grow that trust in you for your comrades. Sometimes it worked. Other times, some prankster would actually let you fall, and then you learned to trust no one. So much for building up our ability to trust. Trust is important, especially in our relationship with Jesus. He calls us all the time and asks for us to trust. However, because of doubt or a desire to follow our own will, we choose to disregard his request. After objecting to Jesus' request to lower his net into the water, Peter was humbled when he caught so much fish that the net began to tear. Peter was a fisherman by trade. Surely he knew what the catch was probably going to be that day. But Jesus asked him to follow his will. Peter wanted to follow his own. Peter realized that his trust from then on should be in the Lord. Do you sometimes think your generosity will bear little fruit? Do you wonder if your surrender to God in stewardship living really amounts to much at all? Trust in Jesus, the one who calls you to this life. His word is truth, and he would never let you fall. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Please remember our parish in your will and estate planning
