* PRAYER OF CONFESSION Ruth Chadwick Moore Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We confess sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Do not cast us away from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit. * SILENCE FOR PERSONAL PRAYER AND REFLECTION * DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Friends, the Lord says do not fear, for I have redeemed you. Jesu, meine Freude, meines Herzens Weide, Jesu, meine Zier! Ach wie lang, ach lange, ist dem Herzen bange und verlangt nach dir! Gottes Lamm, mein Bräutigam, außer dir soll mir auf Erden nichts sonst Liebers werden. Jesus, my joy, my heart's pasture, Jesus, my treasure! Ah, how long, ah long has my heart suffered and longed for you! God's lamb, my bridegroom, besides You on earth nothing shall be dearer to me. MUSIC IN WORSHIP Our final hymn, No. 548 May God Support You All Your Days, serves as a sung blessing and prayer as we go forth to serve. The first and third stanzas delineate God s attributes as the source of all help, implying God s supremacy. At the same time, God s mercy and care are celebrated. These divine qualities are summed up in the fourth stanza with the title Holy One, an expression of both the mystery and the sense of relationship at the heart of our understanding of God. The tune was written by Lee Hastings Bristol in 1962. It is named for Dickinson College, Pennsylvania - one of the eleven institutions that conferred an honorary degree on
Bristol. The text, a paraphrase of Psalm 20, was written by David Gambrell. Rev. Gambrell serves as Associate for Worship in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Theology. He was an ex officio member of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song (responsible for our hymnal, Glory to God). He has written many hymn texts and articles and is co-author of the 2018 revised Book of Common Worship. Gambrell will be preaching at Northminster Sunday, May 19 Presbyterian Heritage Sunday.
