South Davis Family History Center 3350 South 100 East Bountiful, Utah 84010 (801) 299-4239 Hours of Operation Weekdays: Mon. thru Fri. 9 AM to 4 PM Evenings: Tues. thru Thurs. 7 PM to 9 PM Saturdays 10 AM -1 PM Closed Holidays November - December 2012 The First Presidency has given very clear direction to all members of the Church in their letter of October 8, 2012. When members of the Church find the names of their ancestors and take those names to the temple for ordinance work, the temple experience can be greatly enriched Priesthood leaders should assure that young people and their families learn the doctrine of turning their hearts to their fathers and the blessings of temple attendance... We appreciate your efforts to seek out the names of your ancestors and provide essential temple ordinances. We pray that the spirit of this sacred work will increase in the hearts of all members of the Church. The general membership as well as the priesthood leadership of the Church has all received the word of the Prophet and his counselors. It is most significant to note in the sentences above, the Brethren use the possessive pronouns their and your in connection with ancestors and fathers. The Brethren made the principle very clear that it is OUR responsibility to seek out our ancestors and perform their saving ordinances. Those of us who are directly involved in supporting the work of Family History Research share a great responsibility to prepare ourselves in order to help prepare all others to carry out this great challenge. May the Lord continue to bless each of us in this most important work. John Dietrich -1-

There will be no classes for December because of the Holidays. -3- The Prophet Joseph Smith said, The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead. The Brethren support this as an important next step in a lineupon-line and precept-upon-precept pattern of accomplishing the work of salvation for the living and the dead.

On October 5, Family Search held their semi-annual open house. The theme of the open house was: FAMILY HISTORY: NOT A PROGRAM OF THE CHURCH, BUT A PRINCIPLE OF THE GOSPEL. Many of our Directors for the center were able to attend. We learned many great new things and were introduced to some of the new features of Family Tree. The merging and temple ordinance functions are now in place. This is a wonderful new database with many of the features that were missing in New Family Search. There are many training videos and handouts available under the "HELP" tab to instruct those just beginning. We encourage all to become familiar with this database as it will be the only way to submit names for temple work. The Church is changing the focus of family history from being called a program of the church to what it really is, a principle of the gospel. Temple work and Family History work are two halves of the same principle. If you go to the temple using names provided you are receiving only half of those blessings. When you make the effort to find your own family members and take their names to the temple you receive all of the blessings of the temple. In fulling its purpose to help individuals and families qualify for exaltation, the Church focuses on divinely appointed responsiblities. These include helping members live the gospel of Jesus Christ, gathering Israel through missionary work, caring for the poor and needy, and enabling the salvation of the dead by building temples and performing vicarious ordinances. We also want to learn about our ancestors and enrich our lives through their stories. Successful Stakes in family history have these goals: 1. Build a love for our ancestors 2. View temple experiences as family history experiences and vice versa. 3. Engage the youth, provide from family, ward and stake sources the names taken by the youth for baptisms 4. Learn about the people for whom they attend the temple 5. Gather stories, not just names. We encourage all to make the effort to find their ancestors and take their names to the temple and receive all the blessings the temple and family history work have to offer. Kathy Palmer -4-
