LEWISTOWN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Shining the light of the gospel into the Heart of Lewistown since 1785 February 3, 2019 10:30 AM Prelude Come, Thou Fount of Ev ry Blessing Lau My Tribute Crouch/Smith Welcome and Announcements Introit Call to Worship (from Psalm 71:1-6) Leader: Our hope is in God all of our lives. People: God is a rock of refuge: a fortress against threat and shame. Leader: God has held us since our birth. People: So we are never in the full grasp of the unjust and cruel. Leader: In love, God saves and supports us. People: Trusting in God, we continually offer our praise! * Hymn #482 (blue) Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty Prayer of Confession God, our Deliverer, we confess that we are reluctant to speak and to live according to your truth. We grow comfortable with the way things are, passively condoning injustice. We see ourselves as insiders, excluding those we consider outsiders. Forgive us for being timid disciples. Empty us of fear and shame, and fill us with a desire to share Christ s good news. Silent Prayers of Confession Assurance of God s Forgiveness Anthem Poor Man Lazarus Children s Sermon
Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory There is a Happy Land Wood * Doxology #592 (blue) * Prayer of Dedication Scripture Reading Luke 4:16-30 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright 1989 Sermon Believing the News is Good
* Song Days Of Elijah 1. These are the days of Elijah Declaring the word of the Lord. And these are the days Of Your servant, Moses Righteousness being restored And these are the days of great trials, Of famine and darkness and sword. Still we are the voice in the desert crying Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Chorus Behold He comes, riding on the clouds, Shining like the sun, at the trumpet's call Lift your voice, it's the year of Jubilee Out of Zion's hill, salvation comes! 2. And these are the days of Ezekiel, The dry bones becoming as flesh. And these are the days of Your servant, David Rebuilding the temple of praise. And these are the days of the harvest, The fields are all white in the world. And we are the laborers in Your vineyard, Declaring the Word of the Lord! Affirmation of Faith I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
