AQUINAS CATHOLIC COLLEGE MENAI 14 th October, 2013 Vol.20.No.26 FROM THE PRINCIPAL Term IV has started with great activity @ Aquinas. HSC tutorials began last Tuesday and ran through until Friday. This valuable learning opportunity was greatly appreciated by students as they were able to reconnect with teachers after a two week study vacation and refine their final study schedule in the count down to the HSC exams which begin today with English Paper I. I also would like to acknowledge the work of the staff that provided valuable experience and revision activities in the tutorials and for the feedback given to students during their holidays via email and the like. The wonderful Aquinas HSC Prayer Family program has also provided valuable emotional and spiritual support for our HSC Class of 2013 and I would also like to thank those families, Pastoral Classes and staff who were able to act and continue to act as invaluable support for our Year 12s. Thanks also to Mrs Nolan for all of her work in organising this most worthy initiative. This week also sees the Catholic community of Menai celebrate the 40th anniversary to the priesthood of Father Phil Zadro. Father Phil s most significant contribution to our faith is being noted in a number of ways, most particularly with a dinner at Club Central, Menai this Friday and with a special mass on Sunday October 20th at 10am. I hope that as many families as possible can join in with these events to make this anniversary as special as it deserves to be. Aquinas students are being asked to bring a $2 donation to school on Tuesday to put towards a gift for Fr Phil who is always so generous with his time for our students and staff at the College. As we begin a new Term I would ask that parents remind their sons and daughters that students are expected to travel directly home after school. No student is to visit any of the Menai retail precincts in College uniform unless they are with a parent. Congratulations to Chris Naumoff of Year 12 who made his debut from the bench on Friday night for Sydney FC in their 2 0 victory over the Newcastle Jets. Well done Chris on such a noteworthy achievement whilst also completing the HSC!! Please keep the Cary family in your prayers as Harrison s [Year 7] Grandfather recently passed away. May perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Valuable items ie phones and wallets should be carried on themselves at all times. Last week we had some students forgetting their bags and leaving them after school on the oval, containing laptops and ipads. During sport time, school bags must be locked in the classrooms. Hats and Water Bottles The students are encouraged to bring water bottles and be wearing the College cap during break times and sport. Students are also reminded that caffeinated drinks should not be brought onto the College grounds at any time. Haircuts and grooming The warmer weather has resulted in some of our students choosing a style of grooming that is not in line with the normal requirements of the College. A recent style for the boys is one which involves a line being made on the scalp in a form of a false part this style is to be avoided. Students are asked to consult the requirements in the diary which have been consistent since all students have enrolled, to avoid the embarrassment of being challenged. The final decision will be at the discretion of the College Principal. Jewellery Items The only allowable earring to be worn by the girls is a small discrete sleeper or stud, worn in the lower ear lobe. Plastic keepers/ spacers are not suitable for male or female students, and the wearing of bandaids to cover these items is also not meeting the uniform requirements. Could we ask for the support of parents/carers in meeting these standards. Please pray for our Year 12 students as they continue their study in preparation for their Higher School Certificate Examinations which commenced today with our final exam on the 6th November. Good Luck Year 12 s. Mr Anthony Hulme Acting Assistant Principal Enlivened by the Spirit 2

FATHER PHIL S 40TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE PRIESTHOOD OCTOBER 20, 2013 To celebrate Father Phil s 40th anniversary as a Priest our Parish will be celebrating this special milestone with two events. In regards to drinks a limited package of beer, wine and soft drinks will be included in the ticket price however spirits or drinks not contained within the menu will be at your own expense. On Sunday October 20 there will be an Anniversary Mass at 10am followed by light refreshments. As this event will be catered for please write your name and how many will be attending on the noticeboard in the foyer. Love to see you all there to help celebrate this special occasion!. Dear Parents/Guardians, * * * As you would all be aware Father Phil is celebrating his 40 th Anniversary to the priesthood on the 20 th October. Should any family like to make a contribution towards a gift please place it in an envelope marked Father Phil s 40 th Anniversary and forward it the school office. Thank you. YEAR 9 COMMERCE GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS! On Thursday 5 th September, the two Year 9 Commerce classes ran various stalls as part of both the Running a Business and Promoting and Selling syllabus topics. The classes had a chance to put the theory learnt in class into practice by writing a business plan and running their own business. The day was very successful and included many different business ventures including Cans and Cookies, Sweet Dreams and Breakfast at Lunch. These fantastic stalls sold everything from tiny lolly bags and cupcakes to delicious tacos and pizzas. I was a member of the group Sweetest Sweets and found the day very fun and educational learning about teamwork, finance, marketing and legal structures. Getting the chance to advertise and creatively present the stall was one of the most enjoyable parts! Proudly our school raised just under $2000 and are happily donating this to charity. Thank you to everyone who contributed to these stalls, your support is greatly appreciated. Miah-Rose Lake Enlivened by the Spirit 3

Religious Education at Aquinas Year 7 Reflection Day This Wednesday Year 7 will have the opportunity to take a step back from their everyday life and reflect on their relationship with themselves, others and their God. They will be attending a reflection day, facilitated by Chris Doyle of Karis Ministries. Students are asked to meet on the Para Pavilion for morning pastoral, wear their College sports uniform, and bring all food and drink that they require for the day with them. Students are asked to see their Religious Education teacher or myself if they have any questions. HSC Prayer Families Late last term families who registered their interest in participating in the HSC Prayer Family program should have received the name of the student(s) for whom we ask for prayers. We encourage you to send a written message to the student(s) that you have been allocated. These can be initially sent to the College office, labelled clearly with the student name and that it is from their HSC Prayer Family. Messages will then be forwarded to the student(s). Please contact me, via the College Office, if you have any questions. Year 8 and 10 RE Test Last Wednesday, 9 th October, Year 8 participated in the Year 8 Religious Education Test and Year 10 students participated in the Year 10 Religious Education Pilot Test. The questions of both tests were designed to assess knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith as taught in Catholic Secondary schools. Each consisted of 50 multiple-choice questions and will be scored out of a possible 50 marks. Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) at the University of New South Wales will mark the test, analyse the results and produce the reports and certificates, which should be ready to distribute by the end of this term. Mrs Catherine Nolan Religious Education Coordinator Reflection on the Gospel In Sunday's Gospel (Lk 17:11-19) Jesus healed ten lepers who came to him. Finding himself cured, one of them, a Samaritan, turned back praising God and thanking Jesus. Jesus said Were not all ten made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner. And he said to the man, Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you. The Samaritan is not surprised that Jesus healed him. Nor is he the only one of the ten who had faith. They all believed that Jesus had the power to heal them. What makes this man unique is his gratitude and Jesus commends the man for his faith. How often do we show true gratitude for the abundant blessings in our lives? O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 136 Adapted from a reflection by Dianne Bergant CSS Enlivened by the Spirit 4
