Are you getting excited? Shout for joy! Sing Joyfully! Those are terms we hear this weekend on this Gaudete Sunday. Repentance, conversion and preparing are all important topics for Advent. But all of that must lead to a genuine excitement. The Birth of our Lord brings happiness, brings joy and gladness. The young children in our school are so excited about Christmas. We all know why they are excited. The idea of gifts makes every kid jump for joy. I see that and I ask myself how excited am I over the newborn king of kings and Lord of lords. How excited am I about my relationship with Jesus? Am I jumping for joy? I want my life to be at peace so In order to get there, what do I need? I need to be honest about what I have to let go of. That means I have to go to confession. Guilt, anxiety, fear will never bring happiness. I remember when the kids turned our principal and myself into an ice cream Sundae. I was so sticky and cold. I looked forward to a shower. When all of that ice cream washed away, I felt so good. Think of that ice cream as sin and the confessional as a spiritual shower. I can guarantee you that you will feel so good. Christmas is not just a kid thing. I have heard many people over the years say: Christmas is for the little ones and New Years is for adults. I pray that is not our way of thinking. If we understand the true meaning of Christmas then we realize that we all need to wake up on Christmas morning and celebrate, jump for joy knowing the real meaning for the day and season. Have a great week. Your friend, Fr. John Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018

Weekly Reflection... Jesus says all power in Heaven and on Earth has been given to Him, and He promises He will be with us until the end of time. That's great news! We need only to replace our worries and anxieties with faith in Him and let His power work to overcome our sadness, sickness, stress, pain, fear, and all other trouble. So there could be no misunderstanding, Jesus also said these five easy to remember words, I am with you always. Trust Him and loosen up. He has your back. -Don Lane FELLOWSHIP LUNCHEON No Fellowship Luncheon in December. I wish you a Merry Christmas and we'll gather again in January. -- Phyllis Weber Mia Culpa. Dear Friends, I wanted to take a moment to apologize for the confusion we all experienced around the mass time for the vigil of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on Friday December 7th. Be assured your parish office is working hard to make sure that our bulletin, calendar and website reflect accurate information. Thank you for your patience and support. Your friend, Fr. John 3

YEAR END GIVING For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son.. JOHN 3:16 Week in and week out, St. Anthony Catholic Parish Community seeks to serve you, your family, and your community with the hope of the Gospel. We must make sure our parish is well staffed, has heat, and offers the best in Liturgical Celebrations. Our parish is made up of a wide cross-section of socio-economic backgrounds and many awesome people from every background and cultures. We have a rich community of people where we can all learn so much. Our God of love and generosity gives to each and everyone of us FIRST and all of us are asked to participate in this generosity. As you consider where your end-of-year giving might go this year, remember St. Anthony Catholic Community. Remember that this is the community who will be here to baptize, marry, and bury you. Remember that this community will be here to guide you on your faith journey and to pray with you. Remember that we will be here to walk with you if your marriage crumbles, or you find yourself lost in the woods as a parent. Remember that week after week, this community is calling you back to renew your commitment to the living and vibrant Gospel. Hopefully you want to invest here, and want to have a sense of ownership in the mission as it moves forward. By giving generously, we share in the joy of participation in God s mission in Tigard, Oregon. We are Disciples! We are stewards; messengers of God s love, peace and joy! On December 25 th we will celebrate the greatest, most generous gift in the history of the world: the Christ child. In this season, as we remember Him and we give generously in that spirit, we invite you to support your St. Anthony Parish. You belong to God and all you have belongs to God. Thank you for your generosity and your desire to live out your baptismal commitment! CAMP TILIKUM REGISTRAR POSITION OPPORTUNITY FOR DISCIPLESHIP IN CHILDREN S MINISTRIES For the past 25+ years St. Anthony has taken a bus load of children to a week of day camp at Camp Tilikum just outside of Newberg, Oregon. Tilikum will ask us in January if we would like to commit to bringing kids to camp again during the 3rd week in July. In order to make this commitment we will need someone to take on the role of Registrar. Responsibilities would begin in March to prepare for incoming camp registrations on April 1st. This is not a paid position but if you have a child or grandchild who wants to attend camp, you would be compensated by waiving that child s camp fee. (@$200.00)Contact Cindy at the parish office with interest. 503-639-4179 x121 or cmarchese@satigard.org. It s great for folks learning about the Church for the first time, but also for long time Catholics who want to refresh or renew their faith. A typical session includes a video teaching, prayer, discussion and suggestions for you to follow up on your own, if you want. You can come to any or all of the ten sessions and you can start at any time. We will let you know what the topics are a few weeks in advance in the bulletin. Between Darkness and Light The season of Advent is a period of CELEBRATION, HOPE, and REPENTANCE. We spend time in celebrating the coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas. Our Lord s birth shattered the darkness and brought forth a shining star, which illuminated the world. Our lives would be changed forever. Believing in the birth of Christ, we also remember that Jesus is truly present with us today through the Holy Spirit. Our lives must reflect the reality that Jesus is our way, truth and life. Advent is also a time for all of us to be hopeful of his return at the Second Coming of Christ. This calls for repentance as part of our preparation. Advent is that time of waiting, that time between darkness and light. So my brothers and sisters, let us make this time a celebration filled with joy, a time of hope and anticipation, and finally a time for real conversion which calls for repentance. We are called to fast and confess our sins.
