Questions 2:8-12 Paralytic healed and sins forgiven caused a stir with the Scribes and Pharisees who were present Associations 2:13-17 Jesus calls Matthew (a tax collector) to be His disciple, and He eats a meal with him and his friends Tax collectors were hated because: 1. Tax (who likes taxes) 2. Dishonest Tax (tax collectors added to the tax for their pay) 3. Tax to Rome (the money they received was given to a godless country that has raped and pillaged its way through their homeland) There were two groups of tax collectors in the Roman world. -Gabbai- Property -Mohkes- roads/tolls/etc. Great and Little Mohkes Non-conformity 2:18-22 Jesus and His disciples are asked why they do Corey M. not fast. (This is on the heels of their feast with Matthew. They are still wiping the food out of their beards.) Three expressions of worship in Judaism and they were all displayed publicly: giving money, praying and fasting. The Day of Atonement (observed this year on Oct. 12 Yom Kippur) is the only day where fasting was required. The Parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9-12) finds the Pharisee praying in public and claiming to fast twice a week. 19 And Jesus said to them, Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. The Messiah has come this is a time of celebration! He Who makes all things new is right here! 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk [new] cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins. They do not want new. They want tradition. 1. They find their identity in it. 2. They find comfort in it. 3. They get the glory from it. Corey M. YOU CANNOT FIT JESUS INTO YOUR LIFE. HE MUST BECOME THE REASON YOU LIVE. Lack of Respect 2:23 Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began to pluck the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees said to Him, Look, why do they do what is not lawful on the Sabbath? 25 But He said to them, Have you never read what David did when 1 Samuel 22 David (God s anointed) is on the run from Saul, the king of Israel. He and his men are tired and starving, when they stumble into the tabernacle. They ask for food but Ahimelech (the priest in attendance) said that the only food was the shewbread that had already been dedicated to God in the Holy Place of the tabernacle. It was not to be touched for a week, after which only the priests were allowed to eat it. Ahimelech saw the great need of the hour and allowed David and his men to eat the shewbread. God did not punish anyone for the act. 27 And He said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28 Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath. Essentially, you think that you were created to abide by these laws. You were created to have a relationship with God, firstly. These laws only show you how to have that relationship. Instead of worshiping God, you are worshiping the laws about God. Confrontations 3:1-6 Corey M. Minter Page 3 of 5
1 And He entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a withered hand. 2 So they watched Him closely, whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. Again, the Jewish mindset was that illness=sinfulness. This man should not have a place in the synagogue to worship. So they watched Him closely I think this is a set-up. They have placed this man here to try and trap Jesus. 3 And He said to the man who had the withered hand, Step forward. 4 Then He said to them, Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill? But they kept silent. 5 And when He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved by the hardness of their hearts, [Again, I think this is a trap, and Jesus is supremely bothered that they would use another human being to test Him.] He said to the man, Stretch out your hand. And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. 6 Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him. Pharisees(religious) and Herodians(non-religious) groups bent on a Jewish kingdom. Acorn=law; The acorn is not the end all. It is a means to grow a tree. Oak=grace Corey M. Minter Page 4 of 5
They wanted to worship the acorn of law; instead of resting under the oak of grace. We would never know grace were it not for the law. The law had its place, but the law must die in order for grace to take root. Corey M. Minter Page 5 of 5
