The Litany for Ordinations words from The Book Common Prayer 1979 music by Christopher Smith written for Karen Pisarz Boyd on occasion her ordination to diaconate at The Church Heavenly Rest, Abilene, Texas, on January 30, 2018
This setting Litany was composed as a more engaging alternative to conventional monotone, adding texture to service without cing disproportionate attention to itself. All petitions resolve to identical musical conclusion typicy used for litanies, this setting may be used as a "drop-in" replacement when congregation is already familiar with traditional responses without any changes in printed materials. The music is intended to be approachable for an ordinary singer, as usual petitions may be assigned to diferent cantors. The division in petitions between prayers for Church, ordin, world is marked in score by musical transitions may be a convenient grouping for purpose. This score uses two-line staf notation from The Hymnal 1982, organ accompaniment is notated with reciting tone at B (mode 2 on D), but as with any modal chant it is appropriate to transpose as may be convenient for cantor. Note organ line descends to a D, so transposition more than a whole step down may reach end some ranks. One interval in petition 10 may be difcult at some transpositions, an alternate is provided. Tempo markings are recommendations. Lines are not orwise marked should be sung according to ordinary chant practice; in a hful cases where emphasis within a line is difcult to see at a glance, it has been noted with a tenuto mark. Certain petitions ( last half fnal petition) are marked as in time should be sung to a strict tempo, even where phrases may have an unequal number beats. The organ registration suggested is a starting point should be adapted as suitable to instrument, room, cantor. The fnal line each petition but last is unaccompanied. I would like to thank Michael for introducing me to tradition plainchant, David Eric for making sung liturgy normal manner Heavenly Rest for initiating me into Hymnal Apocrypha, Priscilla Josiah for ir feedback in development this setting, cse Karen for giving me free rein not asking inconvenient questions.
