Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time August 5, 2018 OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY Italian National Parish 1668 State Street San Diego, CA 92101 (619) 234-4820 Our Clerics Regular of St. Paul (Barnabite) priests welcome you to celebrate Mass with an open heart and eager desire for our Lord. Message From Our Pastors Father Joseph, Father Louis and Father Albino Our first reading today is from Exodus. This episode in our history involves special divine intervention. There is no other explanation for the liberation of Israel or the crossing of the Red Sea or the survival for so long in the wilderness. God chooses Moses as his faithful intermediary with his people, and Moses response to his vocation and to the mission God gives him is a clear example of how people should make themselves available to God. We often forget how the Old Testament Covenants foretell and are fulfilled by our Lord Jesus Christ. In today s Gospel Jesus tells us, Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Just as the people in the desert were filled by God, we are now filled by his son Jesus. Our community is so grateful you are here today to join us for mass. Take a few moments in a prayer of gratitude for all that you have received. Upon accepting the Eucharist today you are as cherished as the Jews in the desert, and our Lord will feed you with his glory. MASS TIMES Daily (Monday - Saturday) 7:30 am, 12:00 pm Saturday Vigil 5:30 pm Sunday 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 12:00 pm Holy Days of Obligation 7:30 am, 12:00 pm, 7:00 pm 1st Sunday Italian Mass 12:00 pm Sunday s responsoral psalm: The Lord gave them bread from heaven. Today, as you go and proclaim the gospel, meditate on how wonderfully made you are and how much our Lord loves you. For He has chosen you to exist and has embodied you with every grace. Invite Him in 2nd Sunday Gregorian Chant Latin Mass 4:00 pm Please dress appropriately for Church To be modest and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for ourselves and for others. Roger Lechner Ask A Catholic Why is the Eucharist kept in the tabernacle? What is the tabernacle? The tabernacle is a liturgical furnishing used to house the Eucharist outside of Mass. This provides a location where the Eucharist can be kept for the adoration of the faithful and for later use (e.g., distribution to the sick). It also helps prevent the profanation of the Eucharist. Thus the law requires, The tabernacle in which the Eucharist is regularly reserved is to be immovable, made of solid or opaque material, and locked so that the danger of profanation may be entirely avoided (CIC 938 3). The word tabernacle means dwelling place. Any place someone dwells is a tabernacle. The term is also sometimes used for a temporary dwelling place. Thus the tent-like sanctuary that the Jews used before the Temple was built was called the Tabernacle, because God dwelt there. Similarly, for the feast of Sukkot the Hebrews erected temporary shelters to live in for the festival, which is often called the feast of tabernacles or the feast of booths as a result. The tabernacle in Church is so named because it is a place where Christ dwells in the Eucharist. Do you realize that Jesus is there in the tabernacle expressly for you, for you alone? He burns with desire to come into your heart. St. Therese of Lisieux The above Q&A is published by Catholic Answers www.catholic.com

Father Joe Invites you to join him in a 7 part Series: Justification by Grace through Faith and Works Paul vs. James on Faith & Works Article 4 of 7: Faith By Nate Guyear James 1:22-27 says, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only. James 2:14-26, says, What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? So, faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. Do you want to be shown, you foolish fellow, that faith apart from works is barren? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works, and the scripture was fulfilled which says, Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness; and he was called the friend of God. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead. Finally, James 4:17 says, Whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. James said, Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. This is correct. Abraham s faith truly justified him. If, however, Abraham failed to do the works to which God called him (e.g. circumcision and offering Isaac on the alter), his faith would have been dead. One might respond by saying, If Abraham did not do good works, he never had real faith to begin with. This, however, contradicts James 2:14, which says, What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works, upon which James teaching on works is based. It also contradicts James 2:24, which says, You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. A person can have real faith alone without works. This is sloth, a spiritual laziness. I could truly believe in God and put my full trust in Him, but if I do not do His will, my faith would be dead. Faith, good works and refraining from sin are how we remain justified. Compare what James is saying with Paul s statements in Romans 4 referenced in article 2 of this series. James is talking about a person who already has faith and the importance of continuing in the faith with good works. Paul, however, it is talking about someone who has not assented to the faith. This person, as previously stated, cannot work their way to God. They must be justified by faith first. Otherwise, works count for nothing. Paul concludes his point on faith without works nicely in Romans 9:30-32. Israel who pursued the righteousness which is based on law did not succeed in fulfilling that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it through faith, but as if it were based on works. Most of Romans chapter 2 through chapter 11 is dealing with works of the Law preceding faith rather than faith completed with good works. Both James and Paul use Abraham as their example but from different points of view. Paul describes Abraham s transition from lacking faith to having faith. James describes Abraham s actions after having faith. When a man moves from having no faith to having faith, his faith is credited to him as righteousness, just as Paul says. When a man does good works because of his faith and grace, his works are credited to him as righteousness. Otherwise, his faith would be dead, just as James says. One cannot earn salvation, but one can surely lose it by refusing to do good works. Paul s words about boasting because of our works should keep us humble. For it is only by the grace of God that our good works, and even out faith, count for anything and only by His grace that we can have faith and do good works in the first place. A proper understanding of both James and Paul (and Jesus, of course) is necessary in understanding faith and works. Still, someone might look at the very first article and ask, What is baptism s role in the economy of salvation? Dear Friends and Parishioners: Through August 26, 2018 you are invited to join our church's Stewardship Team in helping our friends and neighbors at Fr. Joe's Villages and the San Diego Rescue Mission by contributing gift cards to Target, The Home Depot, Amazon or Walmart. Any denominations of gift cards are welcome. As of 7/31/18 we have received $795 in donations - thank you for your generosity! These organizations will pool their card resources to purchase items ranging from infant to adult necessities. Your gifts have the ability to turn lives from poverty into new chances. Maybe a computer, an infant crib or tool to get a job done. Near Pope Francis, at the back of the church, are empty donation envelopes. Take one, place your gift cards inside and put it either in the Mass offertory basket, the Parish Office, or drop it off at Our Lady s Gifts. Thank you for your generosity! Blessings in Christ, Father Joseph Tabigue, Pastor
