We may convince ourselves that it is the poor who are favored. In today's readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most. Today's scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God's gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Preregistration is requested. For more information or to register call 724-964-8886 or go to vmesc.org. SAINT VINCENT POEM/SONG CONTEST I have always thought that there should be more songs for Saints. There are, of course, hundreds of songs honoring Mary but few (to my knowledge) that honor other Saints by name. I know All Praise to St. Patrick and Dear Guardian of Mary (about St. Joseph,) that we used to sing when I was in grade school but I can t think of any others beyond When the Saints Go Marching In and For All the Saints. Consequently, I want YOU to write a song honoring St. Vincent de Paul. This will NOT require that you compose music, but only that you write a poem. There are many tunes that we sing at Mass that have different sets of lyrics. In fact, if you look at the bottom of the songs in the Gather Hymnal, you will often see a notation: Tune (with a name) and then numbers like 8 7 8 7. These numbers indicate the meter of the lyrics or the number of syllables in each line. Any poem with the same meter will fit that tune. If you have a favorite hymn melody, you might use that as a starting point. What I invite you to do is write a poem honoring St. Vincent de Paul that will fit a common hymn tune. The poem should have at least three stanzas (with or without a refrain) and should refer to some of his virtues such as his care for the poor, his zeal for preaching, his founding the Vincentian religious (Congregation of the Mission, Daughters of Charity) and so forth. I m still working on the details of the contest (including the prizes) and the way to submit your entries, so while you can start thinking and writing, please do NOT send them in just yet. I d like to complete the contest by early spring (so you ve got some time) so that we can print the winning entry (ies) and use them for the next Solemnity of St. Vincent in 2016. I d love to have the hymn become a beloved part of the traditions of our parish. God bless you all. (There will be more to come in the next couple weeks.)- Fr. Dennis McNeil

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES The rich young man in the Gospel knew what he had to do, but he was locked into his stuff. His possessions consumed him and blocked him from truly following God. Pope Francis repeatedly warns us against a throwaway society which discards people. Just as today s Gospel warns us not to be locked into chasing more and better stuff while neglecting God s goals for us. JESUIT RETREAT HOUSE 19 October, 2015. Day Retreat for Stephen Ministers and Caregivers. How Do We Love as God Loves? Presented by Sue Palmer. As Stephen Ministers, we walk with people through some of the hardest times of their lives. Our calling and commitment is to share Christ s love with others but, as Jesus did, we sometimes need to spend time away from ministry in prayer and contemplation. Spend a day of reflection and renewal with other Stephen Ministers and Caregivers as we consider the theme How Do We Love as God Loves? The day will include presentations, conversation, and periods of personal prayer and reflection. Please bring writing materials. Sue is a spiritual director, retreat leader and Stephen Minister. She is certified through John Carroll s Ignatian Spirituality Institute. Coffee/pastry and lunch. 9:00 am 3:00 pm. Cost is $35. 19 October, 2015. Mary: Mother, Disciple, Sister & Friend. Presented by Sr. Mary Ann Baran, SND. Come and spend a few hours with Mary, reflecting on her life, humanity, and role in our lives. As we deepen our friendship with Mary, she gladly leads us, more and more, to her Son, Jesus. Sr. Mary Ann Baran, a Sister of Notre Dame, is a spiritual director and a certified lay ecclesial minister in the Diocese of Cleveland. Sr. Mary Ann ministers to the elderly and poor and to her retreat and spiritual direction ministries. 6:30 pm 8:30 pm. Cost is $20. 26 October, 2015. Life Changer: A Doctor s Encounter with Mother Teresa. Presented by Dr. Paul Wright. Dr. Paul Wright, a prominent cardiologist and University of Notre Dame graduate, was seeking a deeper sense and purpose for his life at the beginning of his medical career. He was spiritually transformed after meeting Mother Teresa of Calcutta. After visiting her, he focused on what she told him, "You're touching Christ within humanity." Dr. Wright will be sharing how his meeting with Mother Teresa transformed his medical practice and his "living out of his faith identity." Light refreshments will be served. 7:00 pm 8:30 pm. Cost is $20. 27 October, 2015. Becoming Like A Child. Presented by Laura Kuhn. Jesus said, Unless you change and become as little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3) In this retreat, we consider how the unselfconscious child interacts with nature, relationships and events. As we reflect and discuss specially chosen children s books and recall our own childhood experiences, we will celebrate the curiosity, creativity, vulnerability and trust of little children. How do these qualities bring us to the Kingdom? Catechists, parents, grandparents, relatives and indeed anyone may find in this retreat an exposure to enjoyable and beautiful stories that open our hearts, make us laugh and remind us of our dependence as we draw closer in love for ourselves, others and God. Coffee/pastry and lunch. 9:00 am 3:00 pm. Cost is $35. To register for any of our retreats, contact Jesuit Retreat House 440-884-9300 or visit www.jrh-cleveland.org
