These days have been honored since early in our faith as a time to remember the great sacrifice the Lord made for our salvation. We begin on Sunday with the celebration of Jesus entrance into Jerusalem with the liturgy of the Palms. It is a joyous and somewhat chaotic time outside (rarely done in most church services) in which we hear the good news and try to sing a hymn while processing (not easy). Then the focus of the liturgy changes to our Lord s Passion, a preview, if you will, of what we will remember again on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are part of the three great days of Holy Week, also known as the Holy Triduum (Latin for three days). These days and the proper liturgies we do on them are ways for us to enter into the mystery of sacred time and remember again what Jesus did for us. They are ways to have Christ s Passion and its grace imprinted on us more fully so that we grow as people of faith. On Maundy Thursday, we remember three major parts of the story of Jesus his washing of the feet of his disciples as an example for us to serve others in love, even doing a task that was reserved in Jesus day for the lowest servant in a household; the institution of the Lord s Supper as the central way that we remember our Lord and his sacrifice sacramentally; and the giving of the great commandment, Mandatum, from which the name for Maundy Thursday comes. Come at 7 pm on Holy Thursday as we begin the great three days of our Lord s sacrifice. Bishop Wright visited us on February 21st to kick of our Lenten Dinner Series: Servant Leadership Today. Click here to listen to his talk on Servant Leadership. (In four parts) Part 1: Part 2: Part 3: Part 4: The Holy Triduum is considered by the church as one continuous service. That is why we do not do a dismissal for either Holy Thursday or Good Friday. Instead we linger to pray and leave silently in reverence. Good Friday is when we remember that Jesus was willing to suffer and die for us as a way to reveal the depth of human sin and the even greater depth of God s love for us. It is a stark service in which we hear Scripture, say prayers, and sing hymns to give thanks for Jesus and his love bridging the great divide between God s holiness and human sin. An additional part of the service is the veneration of the cross. A large wooden cross is brought to the altar and people may come forward to touch it and remember the one who died for us in this torturous way. (Cont. Pg. 2)
Page 2 FROM THE RECTOR (Cont. from Pg.1) Holy Saturday is also known as the Great Sabbath, when our Lord remained in the tomb before his resurrection. There is a simple service in The Book of Common Prayer (page 283), that we can pray during the day. In our parish, we gather Saturday evening after sundown (8:30 pm DST) to celebrate the most ancient Christian liturgy, the Great Vigil of Easter. It can be done any time between sundown on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday (BCP, p. 284). We remember the biblical stories of faith, like the people of Israel being delivered from Egypt. And we celebrate again the central truth of our faith-- Christ is risen! It is also a preferred time for baptisms to see the new life of grace begin for those baptized as we renew our own baptismal vows. I hope many of you will join us for the services of Holy Week. They are central to the life and faith of the Church. Keith+ A little rain didn t dampen the spirits of the 2018 ECOHS Hunger Walk Team!
