SIMILARITIES AMONG RELIGIOUS RITUALS A number of elements are common to all rituals: They are believed to have begun long ago, sometimes at the dawn of human memory. They follow set rubrics (rules of conduct of a ritual) that change very little over time. They have clear beginnings and ends. They do not seem to have practical results in the world. They say something about the individuals who participate in them. They say something about who we are as human beings, about our Earth, about time, about the holy, about God or other sacred beings. Rituals express our understanding of where we came from, who we are, and where we are going. They express certain beliefs about many things.
SIGNIFICANCE OF RITUALS In many ways rituals connect human lives with the mysteries of human existence. Rituals tell us about The cosmos (the order of the universe) The holy Time and eternity Human existence Human origins The ways of God or other sacred beings.
What was Jesus main message? After his baptism Jesus went to Galilee and began a ministry of healing and preaching. Jesus whole ministry was to bring what he called the kingdom of God. He said that this kingdom was near - in fact, it was already at work in his deeds and works.
The Church began with the gathering of the disciples, who became followers of Jesus. The Church continues today through those who respond to Jesus call to come follow me. Christ is the foundational sacrament by being a visible sign of an invisible God.

THE LORD S PRAYER The most important prayer for Catholics is the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples. After Jesus had prayed for a whole night, the disciples asked him to teach them to pray. The prayer is called the Lord s Prayer. Catholics pray it at Mass to begin the Communion rite.
THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
