6 L E S S O N A New Persian Queen Bible Passage Esther 1:1 2:18 Jews lived in various places throughout the Persian Empire. Many lived in Shushan (shü shan), the capital. After Darius died, his son Ahasuerus (ə has yü er əs) took the throne. This king was not as wise as his father had been. Instead, Ahasuerus was impulsive and easily angered. King Ahasuerus had a beautiful wife named Vashti (vash tī), but he also took many other wives, as was the custom of kings in those days. The events in the Bible book of Esther took place during the reign of Ahasuerus between 486 and 471 B.C. Read Esther 1:1-19. After Vashti was removed from being queen, Ahasuerus proceeded to look for a new queen. He sent his servants to every province of his empire, ordering them to gather the most beautiful women they saw and bring them to Shushan, to the king s palace. He would choose his queen from among these women. At this time there was a Jewish man named Mordecai (mȯr də kī), living in Shushan. He was bringing up his younger cousin, Esther, whose parents had died when she was a girl. Mordecai treated Esther as his own daughter. Esther was a very beautiful young woman. When the king s servants saw her, they commanded Esther to come with them to the palace. Esther had no choice but to obey the king s men. So she went with them. When the man who was in charge of the women in the palace saw Esther, he was pleased with her. He gave her maids to help her prepare to go before the king when he chose the woman who would be his new queen. Meanwhile Mordecai was very concerned about Esther s welfare. He had told her not to tell anyone that she was Jewish. Every day Mordecai paced back and forth in front of the palace, hoping to hear news of Esther. Finally the time came for the women to meet the king. He would choose one of them to be his new queen. Although King Ahasuerus met many lovely women, Esther was the one who pleased him most. He chose the Jewish maiden over all the other women to be his queen. 17
