DANIEL CHAPTER NINE DANIEL S CONFESSION AND PRAYER GABRIEL INFORMS DANIEL OF THE SEVENTY WEEKS THE REBUILDING OF JERUSALEM AND THE TEMPLE UP TO THE DEATH OF THE MESSIAH

READ: DANIEL 9:1-2 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans-- 2 In the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:1-2 1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans-- WHEN DOES THIS TAKE PLACE? WHO IS DARIUS? (537 BC)? SEE: DANIEL CHAPTER 5:31-6:1

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:1-2 2 In the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. WHAT DID DANIEL UNDERSTAND? THE WRITINGS OF JEREMIAH? WHAT WOULD HAPPEN AFTER SEVENTY YEARS?

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:1-2 WHAT WAS WRITTEN IN JEREMIAH? READ: JEREMIAH 25:11-12 11 This whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. 12 It will come to pass, when seventy years are completed, that I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity,' says the LORD; 'and I will make it a perpetual desolation. (NKJ) JEREMIAH 29:10 10 Thus says the LORD: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place. (NKJ) WHAT WOULD COME TO PASS?

READ: DANIEL 9:3-4 3 I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. 4 I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession, and said, "O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments,

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:3-4 3 I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. WHERE DID DANIEL SET HIS FACE? WHY? SEE: DANIEL 6:10 10 When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days. (NKJ)

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:3-4 WHY FASTING, SACKCLOTH AND ASHES? READ: ISAIAH 3:24 24 So it shall be: instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-set hair, baldness; instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. (NKJ) READ: JOB 2:8 8 He took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself while he sat in the midst of the ashes. (NKJ) READ: JOB 16:15 15 "I have sewn sackcloth over my skin, and laid my head in the dust. (NKJ)

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:3-4 4 I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession, and said, "O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, WHAT WAS DANIEL DOING? HOW DOES HE ADDRESS GOD? TO WHOM DOES GOD KEEP HIS COVENANT?

READ: DANIEL 9:5-6 5 We have sinned and committed iniquity. We have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. 6 "Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land.

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:5-6 5 We have sinned and committed iniquity. We have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. 6 "Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land. WHO IS WE? WHO IS DANIEL PARYING FOR? WHAT HAD THEY DONE? WHO DID THEY NOT GIVE HEED TO? BY WHOSE AUTHORITY WERE THEY SPEAKING? WHO WERE THEY SPEAKING TO?

READ: DANIEL 9:7-8 7 "O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day-- to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You. 8 "O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:7-8 7 "O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day-- to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You. WHAT IS DANIEL ACKNOWLEDGING? WHY WERE THEY DRIVEN TO FAR OFF COUNTRIES? WHAT IS DAVID ACKNOWLEDGING? Therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him.

READ: DANIEL 9:12-13 12 "He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster. For under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 "As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us. Yet we have not made our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth.

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:12-13 12 "He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster. For under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem. WHAT HAD GOD CONFIRMED TO THEM? HOW DID GOD CONFIRM HIS WORD? WHAT DID GOD BRING UPON THEM?

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:12-13 13 "As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us. (NKJ) READ: JEREMIAH 31:28 28 It shall come to pass, that as I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to throw down, to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD. (NKJ) READ: JEREMIAH 44:27 27 'Behold, I will watch over them for adversity and not for good. READ: DANIEL 9:16-17 16 "O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all those around us. 17 "Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord's sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate.

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:16-17 16 "O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain. Because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all those around us. 17 "Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord's sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate. WHAT DID DANIEL PRAY FOR? WHY ARE GOD S PEOPLE A REPROACH? WHY SHOULD THE LORD HEAR HIS PRAYER?

READ: DANIEL 9:18-19 18 "O my God, incline Your ear and hear. Open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name. For we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. 19 "O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name."

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:18-19 18 "O my God, incline Your ear and hear. Open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name. READ: DANIEL 9:20-21 20 While I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God, 21 Yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.

SEE: DANIEL 8:16 16 I heard a man's voice between the banks of the Ulai, who called, and said, "Gabriel, make this man understand the vision. (NKJ)

READ: DANIEL 9:22-23 22 He informed me, and talked with me, and said, "O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. 23 "At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved. Therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision:

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:22-23 22 He informed me, and talked with me, and said, "O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. 23 "At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved. Therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision: WHY DID GABRIEL COME TO DANIEL? WHAT HAPPENED AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS PRAYER? WHY WAS DANIEL S PRAYER ANSWERED? WHAT DOES GABRIEL WANT DANIEL TO CONSIDER? WHY?

READ: HEBREWS 1:1-4 1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 Has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 Having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (NKJ) WHAT DOES GOD WANT US TO CONSIDER?

READ: DANIEL 9:24-25 24 "Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. 25 "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:24-25 24 "Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. IS THIS A LITERAL SEVENTY WEEKS? OR SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN YEARS? FOUR-HUNDRED AND NINTY YEARS? READ: MATTHEW 18:21-22 21 Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:24-25 24 "Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy. WHEN DOES THIS TIME BEGIN? WHEN DOES IT END? WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THIS TIME PERIOD? WHAT IS TO BE FINISHED? WHAT IS TO BE BROUGHT TO AN END? WHAT IS TO BE RECONCILED? WHAT IS TO BE BROUGHT BACK TO THEM? HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? WHAT IS TO BE SEALED UP? WHO IS TO BE ANOINTED?

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:24-25 WHAT DOES IT MEAN SEALED? READ: DANIEL 8:26 26 "And the vision of the evenings and mornings which was told is true; therefore seal up the vision, for it refers to many days in the future. (NKJ) READ: DANIEL 12:4 4 "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase. (NKJ) READ: ISAIAH 8:16 16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. (NKJ) READ: ISAIAH 29:11 11 The whole vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is literate, saying, "Read this, please." And he says, "I cannot, for it is sealed. (NKJ)

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:24-25 25 "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. WHAT IS DANIEL TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND? WHEN WILL THIS BEGIN? END? WHAT WILL BE REBUILT AND RESTORED? WHO IS MESSIAH THE PRINCE? HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE? WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN IN TROUBLESOME TIMES?

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:24-25 25 "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN 7 WEEKS AND 62 WEEKS? READ: EZRA 6:14 14 So the elders of the Jews built, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they built and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the command of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia. READ: EZRA 7:11-26

READ: DANIEL 9:26-27 26 "After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 He shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. On the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate. (NKJ)

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:26-27 26 "After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:26-27 26 "After the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:26-27 TIL THE END OF THE WAR OF DESOLATION READ: MATTHEW 24:15-16 15 "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. On the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate. (NKJ) WHO IS HE? CHRIST? WHAT SHALL HE CONFIRM? WHAT WILL HE BRING AN END TO? WHEN? WHAT IS THE NEW COVENANT? LUKE 22:20 20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. (NKJ)

For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. (NKJ)

QUESTIONS: DANIEL 9:26-27 27 He shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
