Additional Activities for Unit 1 Offer these activities for early arrivers, for students who finish activities quickly, or whenever there is extra time. Unit Service Project Authority Appreciation Treats Carry out a service project that will help preteens show appreciation to some of the authorities in their lives. Have students make a list of people in authority, including parents, teachers, church leaders, and community leaders. Purchase an assortment of individually wrapped candy bars or snack-size bags of crackers or other goodies. Provide paper, scissors, markers, and tape. Have students cut paper that will fit on or around the treats. They should then write a fun message of appreciation on each paper and tape it to a treat. Encourage preteens to be creative with their messages. For example, on a candy bar the message could be: The service you give to our community is SWEET! When the treats have been prepared, arrange for a few students to help you deliver them to the chosen people. Authority Game Arrange for a few authority figures to visit your class for a get-to-knowyou game. You could include parents, church leaders, teachers, community leaders, or civil servants (police officers, firefighters). Try to choose adults that most of your students do not know. Before class, have the guests write on separate slips of paper specific facts about tasks they do. They should also include some motives for choosing their careers (such as I like to keep people safe ). Mix up the slips of paper and place them in a container. Have guests sit in front of the board. Have students take turns drawing a slip from the container, reading the fact aloud, and guessing which guest it applies to. Once guessed, write the fact from the paper on the board above the appropriate guest. As facts add up, students may begin guessing the jobs. When all the papers have been read, let the guests talk about why it s important to respect and obey authorities every day. Pray for Me Make copies of the Resources CD Prayer Request Cards. When students have private requests they would like you to pray about, they can write them on the Dear teacher request cards and place them in a box labeled Prayer Requests for the Teacher. When students have requests they would like their classmates to pray about, they can write them on the Dear friends request cards for you to share during your prayer time. Optional Bible Skill Builders Use the Optional Bible Skill Builder activities provided on the Resources CD whenever you have time before, during, or at the end of your class time. 6 PreTeen Teacher Guide, Unit 1

Awesome Authority Scripture: Psalm 119:137-144; 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16, 17 Bible Memory: 2 John 6 Focus: God wants us to respect and obey His Word. Lesson 1 Heart to Heart Teacher Devotion A famous comedian had a routine in which he talked about getting no respect. It was pretty funny! But not giving God respect that s not funny at all. Only God and His Word deserve total respect and obedience. Model for the preteens you teach what total respect and obedience to God s Word look like. Keep the Bible central while teaching. Make sure that your students know that what you re teaching comes from God s Word. And make sure they know how much you love and depend on God s Word for strength and guidance. Focus In (10 15 minutes) 1 Use one or more of these activities to help students explore what it means to respect people and things. Focus God wants us to respect and obey His Word. Welcome Welcome each student by name. Early arrivers will enjoy doing one or more of the additional activities described on the unit page. Quick Step Showing Respect Divide the class into two groups. Give each group a length of roll paper and markers. Tell one group to label its paper Showing Respect. Tell the other group to label its paper Not Showing Respect. SAY: Let s think about what it means to respect people and things. Tell both groups to write these categories of people and things down the left side of their papers: teacher, parent, friend, police officer, principal, coach, books, clothes, household belongings. Tell each group to work together to write ways that they could either respect or disrespect the people and things listed on their papers. Give the groups several minutes to work. When groups are finished, display their papers on the wall. Read through the ideas listed on the Not Showing Respect paper first. Then do the same for the Showing Respect paper. Materials 2 lengths of roll paper, markers, reusable adhesive Teaching Tip Display the Poster for the Quarter (Resources sheet 1). ASK: What does it mean to show respect? Accept responses. SAY: Showing respect means to admire someone or something that is good, valuable, or important; to give high or special regard. Let s discover how God wants us to respect and obey His Word. Option Acting Respectfully Before class, cut apart the cards on the printable file. Ask for nine volunteers who would like to do some acting. Divide the volunteers according to the situations on the cards, and distribute the cards. Give preteens time to plan their acting. When they re ready, let the preteens with situation 1 go first. When they re done... ASK: In which scene did the students show respect? Why do you say that? (first one; they listened to the teacher) In the second scene, how did the students not show respect? (They didn t listen to the teacher and they made fun of the teacher.) Then have the student with situation 2 go next. Materials Resources CD Acting Respectfully printable file, scissors Teaching Tip If you have a small class, let a few students at a time act out a situation. ASK: In which scene did the preteen show respect? Why do you say that? (first one; the preteen hung up clothes) In the second scene, how did the preteen not show respect? (The preteen tossed clothes everywhere.) Then have preteens do situations 3 and 4. SAY: Showing respect means to admire someone or something that is good, valuable, or important; to give high or special regard. Let s discover how God wants us to respect and obey His Word. The Beat Check out The Beat, an optional Focus In activity that uses current events, trends, or media to introduce the lesson. Go to www.heartshaper.com and click on For Teachers/The Beat for a free download. 8 Awesome Authority, Lesson 1

Focus God wants us to respect and obey His Word. Explore His Word (25 minutes) 2 Use these activities to help students tell what the Bible teaches about respecting and obeying God s Word. Bible Background for the Teacher Psalm 119, the longest psalm in the Bible, is an acrostic poem of 22 sections, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Verses 137-144 contain the lines that begin with the letter tsadhe. In this section and throughout the psalm, the writer used several terms to describe God s Word: laws, statutes, words, promises, precepts, commands. The writer expressed his joy in learning God s Word, thinking about it, and guiding his life by it. In the New Testament, Paul urged Timothy to handle God s Word responsibly, saying, Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved (2 Timothy 2:15). Paul wanted Timothy to understand, teach, and preach God s message in a way so that he would never be ashamed. When Paul called Scripture the word of truth, he described its quality of God s true message for His people. Later in this second letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 3:16, 17), Paul referred directly to Scripture, saying it is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Scripture proves itself useful in many ways. It equips God s people to do good. It corrects our errors, highlights our sins, and teaches us what we need to know to please God. Although Paul likely was referring to the Old Testament (all the Scripture available at the time), what he said applies equally to the New Testament. We call the Bible God s Word, and so it is. But the biblical concept of the Word of God reaches beyond the printed page to include everything God communicates to His people. Our task is to respect and obey God s law, respect His Word, put it into our minds and hearts, and let it guide our lives. Materials Bibles, whiteboard, dryerase marker, Activities for lesson 1, pencils Note The Scripture text is provided on the Resources CD in both the New International Version and the King James Version, if you want preteens to read from the same Bible version. Bible Exploration Psalm 119:137-144; 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:16, 17 ASK: What book is considered to be in the middle of our Bibles? (Psalms) Ask students to turn to the book of Psalms. What s the longest chapter in the Bible? (Psalm 119) Ask everyone to turn to chapter 119. How many verses are in chapter 119? (176) SAY: Psalm 119 is all about the Word of God. Verse 1 says, Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. Write these words on the board: law, statutes, precepts, and commands. ASK: What do you think these words have in common? Accept responses. SAY: These words are all in Psalm 119, and they all mean pretty much the same thing. Whenever you see these words, you could substitute the word rule. Ask everyone to turn to verse 137. Have volunteers read verses 137-144. Distribute the leaflets, and ask students to look at the activity God s Word. SAY: To better understand Scripture, it can be helpful to ask ourselves some basic questions. Look at the first question: ASK: Thinking about Psalm 119:137-144, what s the main subject? (God s laws) Encourage students to write answers in their leaflets. What words are used to describe the subject? (righteous, right, fully trustworthy, thoroughly tested, true, delight, always righteous) PreTeen Teacher Guide, Unit 1, Lesson 1 9

Why should the subject be important to you? Be sure students understand that God s laws help us know how God wants us to live our lives. Tell preteens to complete the 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 section on their own or with a partner. When preteens are ready, ask volunteers to tell how they answered the questions. (Answers: Main subject: Scripture. Words that describe the subject include: God-breathed; useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.) Accept responses for the last question. Help preteens see that they can only grow as Christians when they allow Scripture to guide their daily actions and beliefs. Then have a volunteer read 2 Timothy 2:15 aloud. ASK: As a follower of Jesus, why do you think it s important to correctly handle the word of truth? (Christians need to be able to tell others the truth about Jesus. We need to know the truth of God s Word so that we can identify false teachings that aren t in the Bible. We can only develop a friendship with Jesus when we walk with Him according to His Word.) SAY: There are a lot of people who claim to be Christians, yet they don t know much of what s in God s Word. But God wants us to respect and obey His Word. That means we admire His Word and give it a special place in our lives. It also means that we spend time reading and studying God s Word, getting to understand it better and better. It also means that we know and understand His Word well enough so we can live by what it says. May it be said of each of us that God s commands give us delight! Bible Memory 2 John 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. Display the 2 John 6 poster on a wall or bulletin board. Have preteens find 2 John 6 in their Bibles. Have a volunteer read the verse aloud. ASK: What word did you hear that means the same as law? (command) How do we show our love for God? (by obeying His commands) What is the command given in 2 John 6? (to walk in love) What does it mean to walk in this sense? (It s how we live our lives each day.) Materials Resources sheet 2, reusable adhesive, Bibles Note The Bible Memory in the King James Version is included on the Resources CD. Ask preteens to look at the poster and say the Bible Memory together. Encourage students to work on memorizing this important verse. Optional Bible Skill Builders Print the Resources CD Optional Bible Skills 1 printable file. 10 Awesome Authority, Lesson 1

Focus God wants us to respect and obey His Word. Make It Real (10 15 minutes) 3 Use one of these activities to help students discover why they should respect and obey God s Word. Materials Activities for lesson 1, pencils, Bibles Sign Language For yes, with a closed hand, shake your hand up and down. For no, the forefinger and the middle finger snap closed on the thumb. Quick Step Yes or No? Show students the sign language for yes and no (see the narrow column). Tell preteens that you re going to read some statements. If their answer is yes, they should make the sign for yes. If their answer is no, they should make the sign for no. SAY: The best way to respect God s Word is by keeping it on a shelf. Pause for students to do a sign. You are certain that you always obey what God s Word says to do. Pause. God s Word is true and right. Pause. We should respect and obey God s Word because we love God. Pause. Ask students to turn in their leaflets to the activity Yes or No? Read the instructions. Divide the class into two groups. Assign each group one of the situations. Tell each group to work together to read its situation and list reasons for choosing either yes or no. When groups are done, have each group read its situation and give reasons for saying either yes or no. Be sure that students have incorporated ideas from Psalm 119 and 2 Timothy. SAY: God wants us to respect and obey His Word. But it s not always easy. We may feel pressure from friends to do something that would mean disobeying a command from God s Word. Or we may just feel like doing what we want to do, not what our parents tell us to do. But God s Word is right and true and fully trustworthy and inspired by God. Ask preteens to turn in their Bibles to Psalm 119:73, and have a volunteer read it aloud. God made us, then gave us His Word the manual by which we should live our lives. Materials Resources CD Circles printable file, Bibles Option How Do You Decide? Hold up the printable file. SAY: Look closely. Decide whether the large and small shapes are perfect circles or are lopsided. Let preteens look as closely as they want to. Then ask students to raise their hands if they believe the shapes are lopsided. Pause as preteens do that. Then ask students to raise their hands if they believe the shapes are circles. Pause as preteens do that. The shapes are perfect circles. It was hard to tell, wasn t it? We often compare objects with surrounding visual clues to determine shape and size. The angles formed by the lines coming from the center of the larger circle confused our thinking. SAY: Have you ever been confused about what s right or true? Maybe someone tries to convince you that telling just a little lie is OK. Or maybe someone tries to convince you that cheating on a test is OK. ASK: How do you decide what s the right thing to do in these kinds of situations? (see what God s Word says about it, ask my parents) SAY: God wants us to respect and obey His Word because His Word helps us know what s right and true. The Bible is fully trustworthy and was inspired by God. Ask students to turn in their Bibles to Psalm 119:73, and have a volunteer read it aloud. God made us, then gave us His Word the manual by which we should live our lives. PreTeen Teacher Guide, Unit 1, Lesson 1 11

Quick Step Take the Challenge SAY: God wants us to respect and obey His Word. Will you choose to do that? When you respect God s Word, it doesn t mean that you put it on a fancy shelf and dust if off once in a while. SAY: Let s use some words and thoughts from Psalm 119 and 2 Timothy to pray and talk with God. I ll say a phrase or sentence, then pause. When I pause, I invite you to pray those same words aloud. PRAY: Dear God, You are righteous. Pause as preteens pray. Your laws are right. Pause. Your statutes are fully trustworthy. Pause. Your law is true. Pause. Your commands give me delight. Pause. Thank You for giving us Your Word. Pause. Help me to correctly handle Your Word. Pause. In Jesus name, amen. Option Corner Bookmarks Before class, make a corner bookmark to show preteens. Cut colorful paper (light enough to write on) into 6" x 6" squares (one per preteen). SAY: God wants us to respect and obey His Word. Will you choose to do that? When you respect God s Word, it doesn t mean that you put it on a fancy shelf and dust if off once in a while. ASK: How can you respect and obey God s Word? (admire God s Word, give it a special place in my life, read it, study it, know God s Word well enough to live my life by it, obey all God s commands) Show students your completed corner bookmark, and tell them that they ll be making similar bookmarks to keep in their Bibles. Give each preteen a 6" x 6" paper square. Here are the instructions: Fold the bottom to the top to make a triangle. Fold the left corner to the center point. Fold the right corner to the center. Open up the triangle. Fold the top flap of the center to the bottom. Take the left corner and tuck it into the middle pocket. Take the right corner and tuck it into the pocket. When preteens are done, tell them to write something on their bookmarks as a reminder to always respect and obey God s Word. Encourage preteens to keep their bookmarks in their Bibles. When preteens are done, close with a time of prayer. Ask volunteers to pray, thanking God for His Word and asking for His help in always respecting and obeying His Word. Materials colorful paper, scissors, markers Tech Tip Go online to find examples of corner bookmarks.
