Jones Well Spen! Are you going o hrow your ooh on he roof? I asked Teague, knowing his firs ooh would be coming ou in a few days. Wih eyebrows raised in confusion, he answered, Why would I hrow my ooh on he roof? I old him I ofen read a sory o my classes abou differen cusoms around he world regarding baby eeh, losing hem, geing new ones and visis from he ooh fairy. He shook his head, added a verbal no, and said he would probably jus pu i under his pillow. Are you going o use my peanu buer and jelly pillow? was my follow-up quesion, wondering if some of my childhood belongings would finally be pu o use again. When I was younger, I had a round purple pillow wih ruffles around he edge, especially for he ooh fairy. The wo suffed dolls, Peanu Buer and Jelly, came ou of he big pocke o play, and a smaller pocke was marked for he eeh. A nigh I would carefully place my los ooh in he lile pocke and wai for morning o find i replaced wih a coin. I found wo coins when I los my wo fron eeh. Colliding wih my siser s forehead on a bouncy house knocked hose loose eeh righ ou. Teague said he would probably jus pu i under his pillow, and ha now he undersands why I do no like bouncy houses. I old him of ye anoher cusom. Some children pu he los ooh in a jar of waer overnigh, and in he morning, i will be replaced wih coins. No really ineresed, he changed he subjec. Can I ask he ooh fairy for wha I wan? I old him no, she s no Sana, and as far as I know, she does no accep wish liss. She does no care if you are naughy or nice. She jus wans your baby eeh. I old him she usually works sricly wih currency and o jus expec money. This brighened his smile and he announced, This will be a good way o make a couple hundred bucks and lollipops! More moherly quesions came ou of my mouh. When does he ooh fairy bring lollipops? How do you know his? He said i jus sounded like a good idea o him. One more quesion. So, do you wan o use my special pillow or pu your ooh in a jar of waer? Same answer as before. No, I ll jus pu i under my pillow. And ha is jus wha he did, along wih a noe begging he ooh fairy o le him keep wha urned ou o be wo eeh, boh wiggled ou by his denis. He jus waned o keep hose eeh even if he did no ge a dime. Teague woke up early and was happy o find a small bag of coins on his dresser wih a noe saying he could keep his eeh for good luck. Finding coins is ofen considered good luck, and maybe even more so when a penny is found heads up. No all coins are merely dropped by chance in a parking lo however. Some coins are lef wih purpose, and you migh find a variey of coins lef on gravesies as you walk hrough a cemeery his Memorial Day. Visiors migh leave pennies on headsones as a way of paying respec o he depared. Nickels indicae he visior aended boo camp wih a deceased soldier, dimes show hey served ogeher, and quarers confirm he visior was wih he soldier when he or she was killed. Tradiion says his ancien pracice began wih he Romans or perhaps even earlier. Greek myhology suppors he belief ha coins lef for he deceased paid for heir journey in he aferlife. Those who lef coins migh have also asked for favors, for a problem o be solved, or for a wish o be graned. Some Americans believe coins are a reminder o offer up o God rus for he deceased and for hemselves, appreciaing and displaying he phrase In God We Trus on a small memeno o remain on he grave forever. Jews lef rocks on gravesones, as a way o paricipae in building he marker iself. Rocks were permanen addiions, and seeing oher rocks would comfor hose loved ones sill living. We end o find solace knowing ha he deceased are no forgoen. Whaever he origin, hese cusoms coninue oday. Today we find graves surrounded wih a muliude of decoraions. Real flowers and fake flowers, sepping sones and solar lighs may be seen on a hillside amongs names and daes. The memenos are reminders ha we all miss someone who has died before us. We leave fingerprins, shed ears, whisper prayers, and long for one more momen. We drop coins ou of radiion, well spen wih remembrance and respec. Maranda K. Rieger buys coon fabrics, unfinished quil projecs, and relaed quiling iems such as ools and paerns from people who wan o downsize heir fabric sash or have an esae o dispose of. Fabric, genly used noions, and unfinished projecs are sored, packaged, and are only offered for sale a various quil shows hroughou Alabama and nearby souhern saes. Rieger is ofen asked how she came up wih he idea of recirculaing sash fabric and relaed iems. She sared sewing as a young child and became ineresed in piecing quil ops as a young adul. As he owner of an ever growing sash of fabric, plus having friends wih he same abundance of fabric, he idea of a way o rade or sell preowned, no pre-used, fabrics evolved. Tha idea became he basis of Buy he Inch Fabrics, where fabrics are sold by he square inch, since quilers ofen sash fabrics less han a yard in lengh/widh. Collecing Nippon China by Mary Dessoie One of he mos colleced accessories from he Gilded Age in America is Nippon china (1891-1921). Nippon is he Japanese word for Japan. I lierally means Land where he Sun Rises, and in Chinese, i s Giapon, where we ge our word Japan. In 1891 he U.S. Congress passed a law requiring ha all iems impored ino America had o be marked wih heir counry of origin. So he Japanese marked heir wares Nippon. In 1921, Congress changed he law o require iems be marked Made in (counry of origin in English). Wha makes Nippon collecible, however, is no only his small 30-year window bu also he hands-on arisry of he designs and, remarkably, ha hose designs are so European in syle. The reason for his goes back o he mid 19h-cenury when an isolaed Japan was forced ino global rade. Back hen, a couple of brohers named Morimura began sudying Wesern-syle design so hey could more successfully sell o European and American consumers. Their back samp was an M in a wreah and is ofen a sign of a qualiy piece. The brohers wen on o sar Noriake China. I has been suggesed ha he color of a Nippon mark is some indicaion of qualiy. This is no so and he Noriake company has saed ha hey never paricipaed in any color-coding and know of no oher Japanese company ha has. I is rue is ha Nippon pieces have been reproduced. So, here are bogus Nippon marks ou here. Membership in he Inernaional Nippon Collecors Club is a useful resource for idenifying pieces. These days, he marke for Nippon dinnerware, as wih all dinnerware, is weak. Bu decoraive and cabine pieces are sill doing well among hose who appreciae hand paining and ohers who jus enjoy ha showy flash of gilding. Mary Dessoie founded he Buer Pa Paer Associaion for collecors of buer pas. A subscripion o The Paer newsleer is $22 and includes a min-condiion Royal Doulon buer pa and en issues of The Paer. Burns Dickson - Tennessee Essenial Oils By Wanda Headrick The clean, refreshing uplifing essence of lemon essenial oil (Cirus limon) makes me hink of he pleasan, warm, sunny days of spring. Pure lemon essenial oil is obained from he peel of he lemon frui by a mehod known as cold expression. The lemon ree is believed o be a naive of souheasern China and India and was impored o Europe via Persia and he Middle Eas wih he reurning crusaders in he 12h Cenury. During Roman imes, he peel of he lemon frui was used o perfume clohes and repel insecs. Columbus brough lemon and orange seeds on his second voyage o he Wes Indies in 1493. Today he lemon ree is primarily culivaed in California, Florida and souhern Europe for pure lemon essenial oil producion. Lemon essenial oil is a yellow o pale yellow or greenish-yellow mobile liquid wih a very ligh, fresh, swee odor. Lemon essenial oil is considered non-oxic and non-irrian. Sensiiviy can occur in some people, so i is always bes o dilue lemon oil wih a carrier oil if i is o be used on he skin. Lemon essenial oil is considered o be phoooxic in direc sunligh and should no be used on he skin prior o sun exposure if he skin area is o be uncovered. April showers bring May flowers so he saying goes. Did you realize ha hose flowers can alk? Yes, i s rue! They have been alking for cenuries. During he Vicorian age, he Language of Flowers which had is roos in boh he wesern radiion of floral symbolism and he Turkish Selam, he Orienal Language of Flowers became very popular. No only were flowers given special meanings, rees, herbs, and objecs were also assigned meanings which furhered he idea of sending coded messages using any one, bu ofen more han one, of hese ogeher. Evenually, Queen Vicoria came o he hrone in England and she was so capivaed wih he Language of Flowers ha she used his symbolism o describe her daugher s love life. Such was her fascinaion wih i ha she spread he radiion around he enire Briish Empire. While ha was many years ago he language of flowers was used more recenly by he royal family o creae he bouque for Kae Middleon s wedding in 2011. A young woman in he Vicorian age migh spend hours rying o decipher he meaning of a bouque sen o her by a young man in order o learn his inenions owards her. Publishers of he day fanned he fire by offering lovely flower dicionaries which conained he various meanings ha a flower, ec. could have. Some volumes were quie exquisie while ohers were small and inexpensive. Wha flowers migh one include in a bouque hese days? How abou pansies? Pansies come in a variey of colors. If you send a purple pansy you are saying, Thinking of you or you occupy my houghs. I s easy o see why he pansy has been given his meaning as i comes from he French word for houghs or memories. Then here s he heliorope. There are several varieies available and he flowers of his plan sand for devoion or faihfulness. They have a scan fragrance wih inense blue flowers. Or maybe he senimen you wish o convey is one of rue love in which case you will send he forge-me-no. Roses are especially vocal and heir color will deermine wha hey say. If you give a pink rose, you are elling he recipien ha hey have grace or beauy. As well, you may have a grea admiraion for hem. If he rose is lavender in color i could sand for rariy or digniy. A cream-colored rose sands for richness, perfecion, or bes qualiies. A yellow rose will ell he recipien ha you have affecion for hem. A red rose means love and if red and whie roses are delivered ogeher hey mean uniy. Beware he yellow rose and make sure i can be inerpreed correcly for i can mean forgive and forge, jealousy, or infideliy, in which case you may be elling someone ha you are none oo happy wih hem. I can also mean happiness, affecion, and joy which is a much nicer se of senimens. If you have a friend and wan o send hem somehing ha will no only brighen heir day bu affirm your friendship hen you will wan o send hem an oak-leaf geranium which means rue friendship. Oher possibiliies for your gif ha will say friendship migh be ivy (which also means fideliy ), a pink rose, or acacia. If your friend is unwell or has undergone surgery and you wan o cheer hem up and wish hem good healh you could send hem chamomile he plan physician or energy in adversiy, yarrow which means heals wounds, healh, cure, bachelor s buon which means feliciy, healing properies, or perhaps garlic chives which means courage, srengh, proecion. Pussy willow means recovery from illness, while plumbago sands for anidoe. If you send iris, ha will ell your friend I have a message for you which in his case would be o ge well. If hey need more encouragemen o ge beer you can send hem goldenrod, provided you are sure hey are no allergic of course. As wih mos all hings, here are boh posiive meanings and negaive meanings ha can be derived from your choice of flowers, rees, or plans as we have already noed above. If you need o send a message o someone who has been unkind o you or wih whom you are no pleased, you migh wan o consider some of he following o ge your message across. They migh no know wha you are elling hem and may hink ha you are being mos gracious given he circumsances. You, however, will know and have he opion of leing hem hink you are a kind, wonderful person. Then again, you could send a card along elling hem exacly wha each selecion means. These are occasions ha lend hemselves o an afernoon ea or high ea ype of celebraion. Afer all, wouldn you agree, a milesone celebraion deserves an exra special way o honor he honoree. I s amazing how ea can represen soliude if having i alone, ye a he same ime, can elici he pleasure of company, when sharing i wih ohers. So, o help you ge sared in planning a ea pary o remember, (and, yes, ea paries are a reservoir of memories) I have some ips and hins ha will help you serve he perfec cup of ea. Beginning wih he eapo, remember never use soap when cleaning your po, as ea absorbs flavors quickly. By he same oken, ea should be served in a eapo ha has been reserved solely for ea, and a china or glass eapo is he beer choice of maerials. Now ha you have your po(s) seleced, you will wan o warm your po while you are preparing he waer for he ea. Meanwhile, remember o sar wih cold waer when preparing o boil he waer ha will be used o make he ea. Whie Tea: Before waer boils, seep 30 seconds o wo minues. Green Tea: Hea waer unil jus before boiling, and seep one o hree minues Oolong Tea: Hea waer unil jus boiling, seep hree o five minues Black Tea: Hea waer unil boiling, seep hree o five minues Tisanes: Hea waer unil boiling and seep for five minues Loose leaf ea is always he beer choice. However, if you are using eabags, make sure hey are of he bes qualiy. When he pary begins, i is he role of he hosess o pour he ea. Sugar, milk, and lemon can be offered afer he ea has been poured. The original eacups were so hin, ha i was hough ha milk should go ino he cup firs, so as no o shaer i. Bu ha no longer applies oday, so milk can easily be added afer ea has been poured. However, i migh be ineresing o noe ha according o Andrew Sapey, a chemical engineer, a Loughborough Universiy in Leicesershire, England, here is ye anoher heory. Mr. Sapey says milk should be added firs. The reasoning behind his claim is ha milk heas evenly ha way. By pouring milk ino he ea aferward, i allows he proeins in he milk o unfold in a way ha allows skin o form on he op. Anoher opion for he hosess would be o designae someone o pour he ea. I would be considered an honor o be asked o pour ea. This allows he hosess o be free o gree her guess and make sure he food is replenished as needed. When serving sandwiches, add ineres by using rye, whole whea, raisin, or oher breads. The presenaion will be elevaed o anoher level as he various ases and exures add ineres o he array of sandwiches. Now he res is up o you o add he special ouches ha make your celebraion more personal. Perhaps Arhur Gray knew wha he was alking abou when he said, The spiri of he ea beverage is one of peace, comfor, and refinemen. Yes, ruly he ar of ea brings an elemen of refinemen ha is hard o duplicae. Therefore, wha beer way is here o pu he SPECIAL in a special celebraion han hrough ea! PAGE 12 Quiling wih Barbara There is no new hing under he sun, said Ecclesiases, and he knew wha he was alking abou. Years ago (1990s) a an archeological exhibi of Roman arifacs found in Germany, all members of our pary immediaely recognized a 2000-year-old recenly excavaed bus as a dead ringer for a conemporary prominen poliician. The likeness was uncanny. A he same exhibi we observed wo idenical pairs of sandals, one having been worn by a long-dead Roman, he oher being worn by a very much alive young lady who probably hough she was wearing he laes fashion. (Remember gladiaor sandals?) Wha lover of cas hasn seen a srong resemblance o ancien Egypian ca saues and painings in cas now living? The French say, Plus ca change, plus c es la même chose. (he more hings change, he more hey are he same), and his was cerainly borne ou in several Arizona museums displaying poery made by long ago (we re alking cenuries here!) indigenous Hopi, Zuni and Navaho peoples. We did no originae modern quiling designs, people! Socalled modern designs feaure many sraigh parallel or no lines, as does his poery. Modern designs feaure arbirary divisions beween moifs, as does he poery. A limied number of colours wih sharp conrass are characerisic of modern quils, and also of his ancien poery. A Spanish pries called his edifice Casa Grande; oday he sie is proeced by governmen). When hey ravel, many quilers look for fabrics unique o he area.
