2nd Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018 GAME ON Lent 2018 It s a little like Dear Abby or Ann Landers today, because someone stopped me after Mass on Thursday and said to me, You know Father John, you wrote this article a few years ago in your column about fasting and I have saved it ever since. Don t you think you should publish it again? It really is very good! And I was handed a copy of the article. So, dear friends, here is my FAST FAST from and FEAST on for Lent from and FEAST on list for Lent. FAST from judging others FEAST on Christ dwelling in them FAST from fear of illness FEAST on the healing power of God FAST from words that pollute FEAST on speech that purifies FAST from discontent FEAST on gratitude FAST from anger FEAST on patience FAST from pessimism FEAST on optimism FAST from negatives FEAST on affirmatives FAST from bitterness FEAST on forgiveness FAST from self-concern FEAST on compassion FAST from suspicion FEAST on truth FAST from gossip FEAST on purposeful silence FAST from problems that overwhelm FEAST on prayer that sustains FAST from worry FEAST on faith we move through the Season. GAME ON Lent 2018! Celebrating the Second Sunday of Lent we hear the familiar Gospel story of the Transfiguration of the Lord. On the mountain, Jesus, with Peter, James and John is transfigured before them, and his clothes were dazzling white. Now, remembering Deacon Tom s homilies the past several weeks and his references about Mark s Gospel as having little to no detail, what do you think about the details of his Gospel today? What do you think the Gospel author is trying to say, because there is a lot of detail in today s Gospel. Take some time to read and re-read the story and ask what DO THE DE- TAILS MEAN? GAME ON Lent 2018 is all about our entering into the Season with grace and hope and love. Are you in it to win it? so to speak? Have you put on the ways of prayer, fasting and giving this Season? Have you fasted from those things that have gotten in the way of a truly clean heart? Have you given more of yourself, your time, your presence, you to those with whom you are most connected? Have you taken up a spirit of prayerfulness church a little more regularly, services, book club, holy hour? It s NEVER too late to Game On. Oh and by the way, the GAME On is an acronym. Work it out in your mind and heart. And I ll be offering clues as THANK YOU for your faithfulness and generosity in the Sunday Collection! Grateful LIVING! Father John

If you would like to join us for the six weeks of Lent, we do have a small number of extra books available. Please call Barbara through the parish office and leave a message on her voice mail. Bring your Bible and join us to see if the Lord might have a message for you. Simply Talking to God Quiet Prayer Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday at 12:30pm in the chapel for Quiet Prayer. This will be followed by reading and reflection on the book Everything Belongs by Richard Rohr. Why not try this type of prayer as a way to deepen your Lenten experience. Prayer Shawl Prayer Shawl will meet this afternoon in the chapel from 3:00pm - 4:00pm. If you would like to find a way to use the gift of your hands to serve the community, why not stop in and see if this is for you. 12 Step Spirituality ** 12 step will not meet until after Easter. Mother Teresa Prayer is simply talking to God. He speaks to us; we listen. We speak to Him; He listens. A two-way process: speaking and listening. Say this prayer often: Jesus, in my heart, I believe in Your tender love for me. I love You. The more you pray, the easier it becomes. The easier it becomes, the more you ll pray. Excerpted from: Love: A Fruit Always in Season Daily Meditations by Mother Teresa (Ignatius Press 1987) Family Perspective Weekend Collection Collection for 2/18/18: $11,350.00 When Jesus was transfigured, the apostles saw Him as they had never seen Him before and they were frightened. When we experience change in a person we love, we frequently resist it because it often means we must change our way of relating to that person. Take a closer look at Jesus and your relationships. What changes do you need to make this Lent that will reflect the glory of God? Ask for grace to change. Thank you!

We will suspend the distribution of the Blood of Christ as a precaution during the flu season. Thank you for your understanding. The gifts of Bread and Wine offered at Sunday Mass become the very Body and Blood of Christ. It is a joy to present these gifts to the Priest as a sign and symbol of the gifts the community offers that of their mind, heart and spirit. We would like to ENCOURAGE the FAMILY of those for whom the Mass is being offered to PRESENT the gifts, after the collection has been taken up. PLEASE, make yourself KNOWN to the Usher well before Mass begins, so that due honor of your loved ones can be made. THANK YOU. Thursday, March 8, 2018 7:00PM 8:00PM at St. Mary of the Falls Taizé Prayer is an hour-long meditative candle-lit service that centers around music, prayer, and silence, to quiet the mind, open the heart and feed the soul. It is a time of quiet and solitude in the presence of God. A few words sung over and over again reinforce the meditative quality of prayer. They express a basic reality of faith that can be grasped quickly by the heart and intellect, gradually penetrating the whole being. We hope you will take one hour out of your busy schedule during this holy season of Lent, to experience the calm and peace that comes from a Taizé prayer service. St. Mary of the Falls 25615 Bagley Road Olmsted Falls, OH 44138 (440) 235-2222 www.stmaryofthefalls.org Taize Evening Prayer: COMMUNITY OF FAITH Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy We are two weeks into the season of Lent. The new mass setting is going well, and I am pleased with how quickly everyone joined in! Hopefully, you have had time to participate in some of St. Mary s different faith-based activities. And if you haven t gone to the Fish Fry yet, I promise you that it is completely worth it and the food is delicious and the company even better! The most important part of our faith is celebrating and practicing together as a community. Whether you are going to the men s or women s groups, or the quiet prayer on Tuesdays, or singing in the choir, or anything of the sort, it s so important to experience Lent together. In today s Gospel reading, Jesus reveals his transfiguration to Peter, James, and John. The prelude sang by the traditional choir was written by Patricia Warren, a composer who posted her piece online for free use! I just recently presented a workshop to the NPM Cleveland Chapter about how to find free sacred music on the internet. In the end, I was able to find this piece through those who write simply for the joy of writing sacred music. It s all about using the community you have and communicating with others to make our faith better! Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number is 440.243.3877 ext 27.
