Highland Baptist Child Development Center We Thank You, dear God, for Autumn, With all the colors bright. The reds and browns and yellows Make such a pretty sight. HighlandBaptistChurch.com Celebrating 47 YEARS October holds several opportunities to impact our community for Christ. You can invite others to some of the children s outreach activities at the end of the month as well as AWANA that has started on Wednesday s at 5:45pm. We also will we be feeding the college students at the Motlow Community College BCM later this month. In addition to that, every service is an opportunity for you to invite your friends, neighbors and family to join us. There are several resources that we can provide you with to share with them as well as sharing our church Facebook page or the church website. Make the most of every moment we have for Christ! I want to share again about the 5 Objectives that give us tangible ways to measure if we are fulfilling our Vision and the Mission. The Objectives are goals that we are seeking to fulfill over the next 5 years, ending in 2022! This month I want to focus on giving more detail about the third objective that relates to our giving. The Objectives are: 1) To see at least 17 individuals annually saved, baptized and set on the road to discipleship by 2022 2) To see our Sunday morning attendance reach 300 by 2022 3) To see our annual giving increase to at least $400,000 by 2022 Like worship, giving is another discipline that we must seek to develop in our lives. The guideline for our giving to God and His work is found in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver. For us to see our giving increase we must come to an understanding that God has created everything in this world and we must look to Him as the source for all our needs. Learning to submit to His authority in the area of money allows us to live a life of peace within our heart and mind as He lovingly provides everything we need. Then we must accept our role as a steward. It is our responsibility to submit to the Owner (God) because we will be held accountable for our efforts. With time we will learn that He wants us to become a conduit of blessing to others as He channels His resources through our faithfulness. Our giving is about giving back what was His to begin with. All that we have, or hope to have, comes from Him. Giving and tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything. It teaches us to always put God first in our lives. We give because He gave first! John 3:16 tells us that God so loved the world that He gave and that passage reveals to us the heart of God and what our heart ought to be as followers of Jesus Christ! On the practical level, we give because we have realized three inescapable truths: 1) We belong to God God owns everything and has the right to determine how those resources He gives us should be used. 2) We have received much God s grace toward us is exceedingly abundant. If we would simply stop and count our blessings, we would quickly see how truly overwhelming the Lord s generosity is toward us. Our responsibility to give is primarily a response to God s generosity. It s an expression of joy and gratitude for the abundance of God s goodness. We must be like the woman who demonstrated her indebtedness to Jesus by anointing His feet with a jar of costly ointment. Jesus said she loved much because she had been forgiven much, and so have we.

3) Money matters to God God is especially concerned about the way we use our material wealth. 15% of everything Jesus ever said relates to the topic of money and possessions. That s more than His teachings on heaven and hell combined. When we give, we are obeying God and doing what is uncomfortable, which helps us grow and be who God has called us to be. So often, we wonder why God is asking us to give, especially if we don t have much to begin with. Can t God ask someone who has more money? Can t He find another way to come up with this money or other need? After all, He is God! Giving sacrificial giving to be more specific can be a hard pill to swallow, especially when we find ourselves in tough financial times. Why does God want us to give when it seems like we are fighting to cover our expenses at every turn? Or when we finally have a little extra after going through some lean times? Why does God seem to value our giving more when we have less to give? While we may question God s specific ways at times, we can ultimately rest in the fact that He knows what is best for us. When it comes to giving, God doesn t need our money or our things. What He needs is us, and the process of giving blesses us and changes us, as well as brings Him glory. In Malachi 3:10, God is saying Go ahead. I dare you. See if you can out-give me. Giving beyond the tithe is a chance for us to be extravagantly generous. So go ahead, test and experience God s generosity! Art Rainer gives this simple three-step formula for your money: Give generously, Save wisely, and Live appropriately! Let me challenge you to do the same. 4) To see at least 100 members discover and use their spiritual gifts to serve in the church by 2022 5) To see at least 100 individuals trained and sharing the gospel locally and around the world by 2022 Let s press forward together!
