August 2018 Pastor s Words W A Y M A N G O O D H O P E A. M. E. C H U R C H News of Good Hope I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. (Psalm 37:25 KJV) Welcome August the month of travel, rest, and vacationing. And, all over the world, August babies are preparing to celebrate their special birth month. August will be a time of reconnecting with family and friends in reunions all over the country. Folks will travel far and near to see who has changed and what is different in people s lives. We will welcome new opportunities to meet new friends and renew old friendships as we celebrate our lives and where God has brought us. In all this travel, it is interesting to note that folks who have not fared well usually will not show up at these gatherings, although every now and then, some people who have been living on the edge may stop by. What do we say? And how do we act at these events that occur every few years if not annually? Most of the folks at these events will be Believers Christians who have raised their children and who have probably been surrogate parents to many others. Most may still be working, but many may be fully retired. All will have faced the challenges of friendships, relationships, and community living. Most will have buried loved ones; and some may even now have the distinction of being the matriarch or patriarch in their respective circles of family and friends. And, most of them probably have been involved in the life of their respective churches. In other words, we will be seeing folks who know the Lord, and who can give as their testimony the faith, hope, and trust found in this scriptural text that says, I have been young and now I am old. And in all my years, I have never seen the Lord forsake a man or a woman who loves Him, nor have I seen the children of the godly go hungry. (Ps 37:24 Msg) Clearly, this is a testimony of faith. And reading this text, I wonder: How old do you have to be to have this testimony? How many years must you have lived to have this assurance of the sufficiency of God s grace? How many birthdays do you need to have celebrated to trust God enough to remind others that God can always be trusted to provide? This 37 th Psalm has been called a Psalm of wisdom. It is a collection of sayings that might easily be found in the Book of Proverbs, yet the message of the Psalmist in this entire poem is clear: God s world is exceedingly well-ordered; and virtue and godliness are always rewarded. And in this 25 th verse, we see in those few words, the predictable connection between deeds and consequences; and we hear the testimony of that promised connection between living a godly life and experiencing God s blessings. Moreover, we listen to a witness who tells of that anticipated connection between faith in God and being touched by God s amazing grace. And so this 25 th verse is actually an affirmation Paul s well known declaration in Romans 8:28 that indeed all things do work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. And so how old do you need to be to be old enough for a testimony? (Continued on page 2) VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS ON PAGES 6 & 7 Vacation Bible School was held July 23-27th. A special thank you to the coordinator, Rev. Elisa Evans, and to all the volunteers who made VBS a joyful, spirit filled time. Page

I would submit to you that the age of testimony is not really about years, but it is about a state of mind and the experiences that shape the mind to see God, and to see that connection between deed and consequence. It is found in the progression of growing in grace beginning with that simple experience of touching a hot stove and feeling the resulting consequence of getting burned. And then as simple as the progression that moves us from the hot stove experience to that of trusting my parents for safety, such that if I am with them and happen to jump off of a high wall, I believe that my Mommy or my Daddy will catch me. And herein is the beginning of a simple testimony that ultimately grows into a wider and deeper trust in my heavenly Father. It is a trust in God that carries me through life and lets me know that this same God who brought me through yesterday s troubles, can and will bring me safely through the challenges of all my todays and tomorrows. And it is a reality that is the foundation of a testimony that I can share with someone else. Hence, how old do you have to be to have a testimony and to be a witness? The answer is this: only old enough to have experienced God s grace. But how old is that, you still ask? Let us first remember that a testimony is more than just a story. A testimony is a reminder of a TRUTH that can be verified. Hence, our testimony is that God is in control of the universe, and that if we love God and put our trust in the Creator who has ultimate control and power over His world, then that same God is the Lord who will bless us and keep us in His care. Moreover, the assurance is that those around us will be blessed. Our children will be blessed, and all whom we touch will be blessed because they have listened to our report and pondered these things in their hearts. Pastor s Words (continued from page 1) But how old is old enough for a testimony? The bottom line is that old enough for a testimony is old enough to declare that we have spent enough time with God to have arrived at a place where we can trust our experience of God s GRACE enough to tell someone else about it and to use our telling as a word of encouragement for their lives. It s called touching someone s life. It s called being the difference that makes a difference. It is a testimony that is embodied in that old hymn of the Church If I can help somebody as I travel on; if I can cheer somebody with a word or song; if I can show somebody that he s traveling wrong, then my living shall not be in vain Then that next verse says, If I can do my duty as a Christian ought, if I can bring some beauty in a world o er wrought; if I can share God s message that the Master taught, then my living shall not be in vain How old is old enough for a testimony? It is old enough to have been lost and to know that you have been found; it is old enough to have experienced the goodness of God, and the mercy of God in blessing those who put their trust in God; and it is old enough to not be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to therefore, willingly live a life of sharing the good news that God s grace is sufficient, & that we can be assured that those who trust God will always ultimately be blessed! Let us share our testimony, as we find ourselves witnessing for the Lord during our travels. And, let us continue to run with patience the race that is set before us, always looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. Love, Joy, and Peace, Pastor Poag-Ray Scriptural Thought for the Conference Year 2018-2019 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. NEWS FROM THE COMMISSION ON HEALTH SIS. SYLVIA NOLAN, CHAIRPERSON CONSUMER ALERT THE IRS DOES NOT CALL PEOPLE! If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, hang up immediately. Do not answer any questions or give any information. The IRS contacts you by U.S. Mail not by telephone. Beware of people going door-to-door claiming to be from BGE They may be trying to get you to change your electricity and or gas supplier using deceptive tactics. They may have a badge and tell you that BGE is giving away something (a month free energy, free light bulbs, etc.) They will ask you to show them your BGE bill so you can get the free items. They are after your Choice ID number. This is the number that is needed to change your energy supplier. You do have the right to select an energy supplier, however some companies use deceptive practices to switch you promising a low rate or free items and then lock you into a contract where the price increases substantially after a short period of time. There may also be a cancellation fee. Make sure you are aware of the terms before you change your provider. If you are looking for ways to save on your BGE bill, talk with Bro. F. Chester Ray to get information about a program that guarantees savings with no contract, and that benefits Wayman Good Hope. Page 3
