PROVIDENCE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH JULY / AUGUST 2014 the Invitation The Story is coming to Providence The Story is an abridged, chronological Bible that reads like a novel. There are no verse references, and NIV Scripture segments are seamlessly woven together with transition text into a single grand narrative. As The Story brings the Bible to life, the broad scope of God s message will penetrate hearts. People of all ages will be swept up in the story of God s love and God s plan for their lives. Want to learn more about how The Story will unfold at Providence in September? Come to the Fellowship Hall following worship on Sunday, July 13. Weird Animals Vacation Bible School Where Jesus Love is One-of-a-Kind VBS registration is in full swing VBS is August 4-8 from 9am to 12pm and the theme is "Weird Animals: Where Jesus' Love is One-of-a-Kind" Please register your children and grandchildren for a week they will not forget Pick up a blue registration form if you have a rising 1st grader through 5th grade and a green registration form if you have a 3 year old through rising Kindergartener. From My Open Door The church is in the midst of a rummage sale In May I started an article sharing the comments of Roger Nishioka on the 21st Century Reformation - Eight trends that are changing and challenging the Church. You ll remember that he talks about a book by Phyllis Tickle (The Great Emergence) wherein she states that - every 500 years or so Christ s church goes through a rummage sale. In a rummage sale we get rid of stuff, and Tickle believes that Christ s church is in the midst of working out what stuff is worth keeping and what is not. By way of a reminder, In May I quoted Nishioka as saying that he believes there are eight shifts that the church is in the midst of making during this rummage sale. The first three are that (1) the Church is moving from Tribal Education to Immigrant Education; (2), the church is shifting its focus from mission out there to mission right here, and (3) from reasoned spirituality to mystery filled spirituality. In June I continued with the next three shifts: (4) from Credentialed Leadership to Jeffrey S. Bell, Pastor Gifted Leadership; (5) from Long Term Planning to Short Term Planning, and (6) from Mass Evangelism to Oneon-One Evangelism. Here are his last two: 7. From High Tech to High Touch - with the rise of high technology will be an increase in the need for high touch where people will value knitted shawls, handwritten notes, and homemade baked goods. As connected as we think we are with technology and Facebook and tweets and instagrams, people feel more alone and more isolated than ever before. The church of Jesus Christ was built to reach out and tell people that they are not alone. 8. From Discipleship to Apostleship - In the 20th century churches put a lot of effort in discipleship (getting people to come to church to learn about God). In the 21st century the shift is moving to being an apostleship church (getting people in the church to go to where the people are to share God with them). If we think that we can sit in a pew as people come to us, we re living an illusion. The challenge for us is to move out. If this has interested you, and would like to view a video of the lecture, you can see it in its entirety at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0hlvasrjpm. See you in Church Jeff SESSION NOTES The Session met on Sunday, June 9, 2014, and conducted the following business: - Approved use of "The Story" for fall curriculum for all ages of Sunday school classes - Authorized a love offering for our retiring sexton, Melvin, during worship on June 22 MUSIC NOTES During the more relaxed days of summer, when the choir takes a well-deserved break from their weekly Wednesday rehearsals, we will have a "pick-up" choir in the chancel to lead the congregational singing and offer a simple introit, and special music (solos, duets, small ensembles) during the anthem time. We would love to have you join us for Summer Choir. We practice in the choir room right before worship, at 10:40, and do not wear robes. Children, youth, and adults are welcome. If you'd like to experience worship from a different perspective, give it a try Questions? Call Valetta at 518-8299. Save the date Our handbell choir, Bells of Providence, has been invited to join with three other handbell choirs (from Community United Methodist, Great Bridge Baptist, and Great Bridge Presbyterian) for "O That I Had a Thousand Voices"at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church, Cedar Road in Chesapeake, on Thursday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. Esteemed handbell composer Cathy Moklebust will lead the massed handbell choir in festival worship through music and the spoken word with organist Michael Burkhardt. This event is open to everyone and is part of the annual Virginia Wesleyan College Sacred Music Summer Conference Best wishes for a relaxing and rejuvenating summer A CARING CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP REACHING OUT IN RESPONSE TO GOD S LOVE PAGE 2

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN Several women from Providence traveled to the Presbyterian Women Synod Summer Gathering at Massanetta Springs during the first weekend in June. The days were filled with wonderful teaching, workshops, fellowship, mission work, and rocking on the porch. Our women returned with new ideas and innovative ways to present future studies and programs at Providence. The summer ahead holds opportunities for women to gather with friends, learn about coming studies, and give to children in need in our community. Mark your calendars with these events and invite a friend to join us School supply collection for St. Columba Ecumenical Ministries - July through August 17 Providing school supplies for children in need. Thank you to all who contributed You may continue to drop off Box Tops in the containers located at each sanctuary entrance throughout the summer. Thank you to the many volunteers who so lovingly gave of themselves during Reading Café and Lunch Buddies. As you enjoy the summer break, give some thought to what you might be able to do in September to help at Fairfield Elementary. This year s volunteers can tell you about their wonderful experiences: Reading Café Dianne Stockmeier, Jane Pritchett, Janice Singletary, Margaret Harker, and Linda Dean; Lunch Buddies Dianne Stockmeier, Jane Pritchett, Margaret Harker, and Glynn Rogers.
