But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? Job 28:12 Christ Jesus became to us wisdom from God. 1 Corinthians 1:30 Public Worship on the Lord s Day May 7, 2017 THE WORD CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 148:11-13 Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and maidens together, old men and children! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven.
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Text & Music: Martin Luther (1529) Public Domain Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God s own choosing: dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth, his Name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us: the Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, one little word shall fell him. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth: let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God s truth abideth still, his kingdom is forever.
PRAYER OF INVOCATION He is risen! He is risen indeed! Let us pray CALL TO CONFESSION OF SIN Genesis 3:7-9 The eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, Where are you? CONFESSION OF SIN Father of mercies, we confess that we have sinned against you. By your Holy Spirit, come and work repentance into our hearts. Help us to see you as you are: with outstretched arms, a loving heart, and power to save. Help us to see Jesus, the friend of sinners, and to follow him more faithfully. As we have received him, so strengthen us to walk in him, depend on him, commune with him, and be conformed to him. Give us an experience of your grace that makes us bold for others, that we might joyfully tell our friends and neighbors of your saving mercy. Amen. (Silent confession) ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Genesis 3:21 The LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. May the peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! OFFERING 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow! Praise him, all creatures here below! Praise him above, ye heavenly host! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Proverbs 1:20-33 20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice;
21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: 22 How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? 23 If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you. 24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, 25 because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, 27 when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. 28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. 29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, 30 would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, 31 therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. 32 For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; 33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray (Elder prays) And now as our Savior taught us, we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

GOSPEL READING John 7:25-39 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, Is not this the man whom they seek to kill? 26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from. 28 So Jesus proclaimed, as he taught in the temple, You know me, and you know where I come from. But I have not come of my own accord. He who sent me is true, and him you do not know. 29 I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me. 30 So they were seeking to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet many of the people believed in him. They said, When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done? 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. 34 You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come. 35 The Jews said to one another, Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, You will seek me and you will not find me, and, Where I am you cannot come? 37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise be to you, O Christ! SERMON Seeking Wisdom (Rev. Eric Costa)
THE UPPER ROOM CONFESSION OF FAITH Philippians 2:6-11 What do you believe about Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus Christ, being God, made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born a man. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. (Greet one another with the words, The peace of Christ be with you. ) INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE AND PRAYER WORDS OF INSTITUTION 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 THE MYSTERIUM FIDEI 1 Corinthians 11:26; 5:7-8 Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Deep Were His Wounds, And Red Text: William Johnson Music: Vito Aiuto New Jerusalem Music/ASCAP Deep were his wounds, and red, on cruel Calvary, as on the cross he bled in bitter agony. But they whom sin has wounded sore find healing in the wounds he bore. But they whom sin has wounded sore find healing in the wounds he bore. He suffered shame and scorn and wretched, dire disgrace; forsaken and forlorn, he hung there in our place. But all who would from sin be free look to his cross for victory. But all who would from sin be free look to his cross for victory. His life, his all he gave when he was crucified; our burdened souls to save, what fearful death he died! But each of us, though dead in sin, through Christ eternal life may win. But each of us, though dead in sin, through Christ eternal life may win.
