Alice Parker and Robert Shaw Chamber Singers

Program Notes The lifespan of English composer William Byrd encompassed tumultuous religious and political events. Born near the end of Henry VIII s reign, Byrd lived through the reformation of the church under Edward VI, the return of Catholicism under Mary I, and the final break with Rome under Elizabeth I. While serving as Gentleman of the Chapel Royal under the protestant monarch Elizabeth, Byrd secretly converted in Catholicism and was cited in 1584 for recusancy (refusal to attend Church of England services), though he was never seriously disturbed by the authorities due to his connections at court. Byrd and his family supported the underground Catholic community and attended secret Jesuit meetings. His Latin motets of the 1570s and 1580s are drawn from texts like Psalm 137 ( How long shall we sing the Lord s song in a strange land? ), and Byrd s three settings of the Ordinary of the Mass (for three-voices, four-voices, and five-voices) from 1592-1595 were printed separately so as not to draw attention to this body of new sacred music for the Catholic liturgy. Remarkable that he never suffered repercussions for his religion, Byrd died quietly and comfortably in 1623. Emma Lou Diemer is an American composer and organist. She received degrees from Yale and Eastman and studied composition with Hindemith, Hanson, Toch, and Sessions. She has written for a variety of instruments and ensembles. Her style is wide-ranging, from strict 12-tone technique with serialized rhythm, to extended techniques for the piano, to electronic music. Her choral music is mostly in a neo-classical and neo-romantic idiom. The Fragments from the Mass is a standard of the women s choir repertoire and was composed in 1960.

Wondrous Love What wondrous love is this, O my soul. What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul. Traditional When I was sinking down, O my soul. When I was sinking down beneath God s righteous frown, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul. To God and to the Lamb I will sing. To God and to the Lamb who is the great I am. While millions join the theme, I will sing. And when from death I m free I ll sing on. And when from death I m free, I ll sing and joyful be, And thro eternity I ll sing on.
