If I Should Awake Before I die Romans 13:11-13 When I was a child, I learned a simple little prayer that went something like this: Now I lay me down to sleep I pray dear Lord my soul you ll keep And if I should die before I awake I pray dear Lord my soul you ll take. Today, it seems almost a blessing for someone to be able to say about a person that has passed away in their sleep, They passed peacefully in their sleep. But have you ever stopped to think what if we should awake before we die, instead of dying before we awake? Listen to this challenge in Ephesians 5:14-17, Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. We have also been told in 1 Corinthians 15:34 to Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. Someone has said, The Church is the sleeping giant of America. Well I think it is time for someone to give us a good swift kick in the behind and wake us up!! And if this should happen, what would we be awakened to? I want to share with you just a few. First of all, we would awake to a better understanding of our salvation. Look again at Romans 13:11, And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The Bible is not telling us the more we believe the more salvation we gain, but rather, in this passage of Scripture the Holy Spirit is speaking of the Return of Christ! Salvation is presented to us in three tenses: past, present and future. Past tense when you invited Christ to come into your heart! 1

you were saved. Present tense every day we should be living and growing in our walk with Christ. Future tense - is when we will experience the completion of our salvation. Romans 8:18-25 says, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Child of God, there is coming a day when all of creation is going to be delivered from the curse of sin and we will walk in the light of God s wonderful glory! Although we are told in Matthew 24:36, But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. If we can believe anything at all the Bible says, then surely we must believe we are closer to our Lord s Return today than we were yesterday! If that is the case, and it is, then we need to understand the urgency of being about the Father s business! There are souls that need to be saved; believers that need to be renewed in their commitment to Christ; the sick need to be healed; broken hearts and homes need to be mended!! O, children of God, Romans 13:12 cries out to us, The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Listen to Church We must not; we cannot; and by God s grace, we will not sleep away precious time while the world around us goes to Hell without Christ! We must be about the Father s business before it is eternally too late! Second, we must awake to righteousness. 1 Corinthians 15:34! 2

says we are to Awake to righteousness Isaiah 61:10 says, I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Listen to Romans 15:7, For if by the one man s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. Child God, I beg you to see yourself as God sees you and believe what God says about you! Romans 8:15-17 gives us this insight, For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs - heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. The business world has long ago discovered that a person will never rise above his or her self-image. It is a fact the image we form of ourselves will cause us to either succeed or to fail in life! Not only is this a fact in the world system, but also in the lives of many believers who believe God is against them because of previous failures. You see, far too many believers see themselves through their own critical eye. Their self-image has been distorted by condemnation of the enemy. Therefore, they have been deceived in their own imagination. The telling signs of such distortion reveal itself in their negative thinking, their negative talking, and lack of compassion. They always see themselves as the victim and as the victor. And I promise you they will be crippled for life unless they are able to see themselves as God see them. Child of God, you are somebody!! You Father is holy God! Your Lord brother is Jesus Christ! You have been made righteous through faith! And you are more than a conqueror through (Christ) who loves you! Glory to God and thank you Jesus!!! 3

Third, we must awake to love. When we awake to righteousness, we will of necessity awake to love, as seen in John 13:35-35, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. But He goes on to say this in Matthew 5:43-48, You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. And Ephesians 4:32 says, And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. There is no doubt Jesus knew the human heart, for how many of us are guilty of showing love only to those in return show love to us. Look again at Matthew 5:47, If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But let s put verse 31 with Ephesians 32 and take a look, Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. What about the conditions for those actions? My dear friend, there are no conditions God simply said, Do it! But to love your enemies and to Pray for those who persecute you, you must swallow a lot of pride! The flesh and Satan will tell you to Get even or forget it, but Jesus has said to love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! Child of God, in a world so filled with so much hate and anger love is a valuable commodity!! Four, we must awake to a new reality. Romans 13:12 reads like! 4

this in the Greek, The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Child of God, I need for you to understand this great and awesome truth The Past is Past! and 1 John 1:7 reminds us, the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. Hear me well today the world, as well as church folks, might look at you and say, Isn t this the same person that was in bondage to drugs or alcohol? or Isn t this the same person that was involved in adultery? or whatever. Go ahead and let them talk! Do you know why? Because the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. Glory to God and thank you Jesus!! Many of the people who were a part of the ministry of Jesus earthly ministry were people with a blemished past! Matthew, for example was a Tax Collector. Few people were hated as much as Tax Collectors in Jesus day! Matthew collected taxes for the Roman Empire and no doubt was considered a traitor by the Jews and was looked on as a common thief! But Jesus said, The past is the past! Get up and follow me! Regardless of his past, Matthew served as a great apostle and wrote one of the books of the New Testament. Much of the history and the greatness of Jesus would be lost without the life and ministry of this man with an immoral and inappropriate past. Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come for us to put off our nightclothes; stop worrying about what other people might say, and get on with the business of the Father! Listen and get this there will always be those self-righteous hypocrites who will sit back and run their mouth in judgment about people just like us! But, glory to God, the reality is - the blood of Jesus Christ (God s) Son cleanses us from all sin. Last of all, we must awake to a new understanding! Ephesians 5:17 says, Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Ladies and gentlemen, 1 Timothy 2:3-4 reminds us, For! 5

this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. If you are in the sound of my voice, and have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Savior it is God desire for you to do so! If we should awake before we die, truly we will realize the day is far spent and there is much work to be done! Stand for prayer. Father, Your word is true. Truly the day is far spent and I realize I need to be about Your business. In Jesus name. Amen.! 6
