Social: Providing Time for Fun Interaction (Small Groups, 15 minutes) Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today s Bible Truth. Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Pray that kids would walk away from today with tangible ways to practice patience when it s hard. Pray that kids would understand that God wants to help them and wants to hear from them when they re struggling. Ask God to help kids understand that His answers might not always look like what they expect, but that He s present with them nonetheless. 9:00 & 11:30 View Along the Way Made to Create: an activity that explores spiritual ideas through the process of drawing, building, and designing What You Need: Cardstock squares (6 per child), markers What You Do: Hand out cardstock and markers. Tell kids to pretend that they went on a road trip (it could be to anywhere they want). Instruct kids to draw pictures in their squares as if they are pictures they took along the way while they were on their pretend road trip. As time allows, let kids share their pictures with the group. What You Say: Those sound like some pretty amazing trips! You guys are giving me a travel bug. Having a fun trip coming up can be fun to look forward to but also hard to wait for. [Transition] Today in Large Group, we are going to talk about someone who was waiting for something for a VERY long time. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 2

10:15 Dots and Lines What You Need: Dots and Lines Activity Page, pencils What You Do: Pair up the kids and give each pair two pencils and an Activity Page. Each kid will take a turn connecting two adjacent dots with a line, either horizontally or vertically. Whenever kids make a line that completes a square, they should write their initials inside and then they get an extra turn to draw another line. The lines don t have to be continuous; players can connect any two adjacent dots on the page on their turn. After all the dots are connected, the kid with the most squares wins. What You Say: That game took some strategy and patience! You had to really look ahead and sometimes you didn t even get the square you wanted. [Transition] Let s go to Large Group and hear about someone who had been thinking about something she wanted for years and years, and we ll find out what she did when it seemed like it was never going to happen. ADAPTATION: Give pairs of kids the Activity Page and pencils. See if, by starting at opposite corners, kids can connect all the dots on their side of the page. Then wrap up by saying, It takes a while to get all the dots connected; we had to have patience to not just scribble over all of these. Let s go to Large Group to hear about someone who had to have a lot of patience as God worked out His plan for her dot by dot and year by year. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 3

I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for today because I LOVE hanging out with you here at [your environment s name]! That s what you have to do sometimes. You have to be patient while you wait. Good thing we re talking about patience this month! CG: Patience Slide Patience is waiting until later for what you want now. There are lots of times when you have to wait for the things you really want. You have to wait for your birthday. You have to wait to open your Christmas presents. You have to wait while you re riding in the car like, ALL the time when all you want to do is just GET there. That s why we re on a road trip around here all month long. We re on an epic journey to discover how we can have PATIENCE while we wait for the things we really want. Take a look. CG: 252 Intro Video Historyteller enters. SETTING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH HISTORYTELLER: Patience is waiting until later for what you want now. But that s not always easy, is it? What do you do when you feel like you just can t wait? Well, let s take a look at a true event from the book of 1 Samuel. (Hold up Bible.) You ll see what one person did when she had to wait for something she REALLY wanted. In the rolling hills of Ephraim, there lived a woman named Hannah and her husband, Elkanah. 5

Open the flip book to the image of Hannah in a rocking chair. There was one thing Hannah wanted more than anything: a baby. But years passed. And more years passed. Flip the blank pages. Flip more blank pages. And no baby arrived. Hannah was understandably confused and even frustrated. Would they ever have a baby? Each year, Hannah went with Elkanah and others from their town to Shiloh so they could worship God. Together, they ate a meal to celebrate and honor God. PENINNAH MAKES FUN OF HANNAH HISTORYTELLER: That is, everyone ELSE ate. Flip to image of Hannah and Elkanah at the table with others. Flip to image of Hannah staring at her plate. Hannah could only stare at her plate. To make matters worse, there was another woman, Peninnah, who would LAUGH at her. Yikes! Can you imagine? Penninah made fun of Hannah because she didn t have any children of her own. Flip the blank pages. Year after year, Hannah had to endure Peninnah s taunts. Penninah kept telling her that God had probably forgotten all about her. Hannah didn t want to believe Penninah, but it was hard to understand why God hadn t given her a child yet. Elkanah would step in and defend Hannah, but he didn t understand why she was so very sad. Wasn t being his wife enough for her? Well, Hannah loved Elkanah, but she still wanted a baby very badly. She had been asking God for SO long. Flip a few more blank pages. HANNAH PRAYS HISTORYTELLER: One day, as Elkanah tried to comfort her, Hannah excused herself from the table. She was too upset even to hear Elkanah s kind words. She headed toward God s house. She made her way inside past the priest, Eli, who sat at the door. Listen to what happened next. Set down the flip book. Open the Bible to 1 Samuel 1:10-6

11a and read. Hannah was very sad. She wept and wept. She prayed to the LORD. She made a promise to him. She said, LORD, you rule over all. Please see how I m suffering! Show concern for me! Don t forget about me! Please give me a son! If you do, I ll give him back to the LORD. Then he will serve the LORD all the days of his life (NIrV). Pick up the flip book and flip to the picture of Hannah praying. Eli watched from the doorway. He could see Hannah s lips moving, but he couldn t hear a word she said. She told him that she was praying. She was telling God all her troubles. She was just so sad, and she had come to God s house to talk to Him. Eli told her: Go in peace. May God give you what you have asked for (1 Samuel 1:17 NIrV). Hannah was so thankful. Flip to picture of happy Hannah eating. She felt so much better that she was able to return to the table and eat again. We can read in 1 Samuel that people could see from her face that she wasn t sad anymore. Whatever happened, she knew that God had heard her prayer. HANNAH HAS A BABY HISTORYTELLER: The next day, after worshiping in God s house, Hannah traveled home. The seasons turned. Rains came. The harvest passed. And...... God gave Hannah and Elkanah a tiny baby boy! Flip the blank pages. Flip more blank pages. Flip more blank pages. Flip to the picture of the baby boy. When it came time to pick the baby s name, Hannah knew just what it should be. I asked the LORD for him, she said (1 Samuel 1:20 NIrV). His name would be Samuel, which means God has heard. Hannah and Elkanah loved their little boy and God helped him grow strong. But Hannah never forgot her promise to God that if He would give her a child, she would give him back to God and he would 7

serve God his whole life. Some time passed... Flip a couple of blank pages.... but one year when it was time to visit God s house, Hannah knew it was time to take Samuel. Flip to the picture of Hannah and young Samuel. WRAPPING UP THE BIBLE TRUTH HISTORYTELLER: When they arrived, Hannah searched for Eli, the priest. Listen to what she said to Eli when she found him. Set down the flip book. Open the Bible to 1 Samuel 1:26-28 and read. Hannah said to Eli, Pardon me, sir. I m the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD. And that s just as sure as you are alive. I prayed for this child. The LORD has given me what I asked him for. So now I m giving him to the LORD. As long as he lives he ll be given to the LORD (NIrV). Eli must have known that it wasn t easy for Hannah to leave her son. But he worshipped God for the amazing thing God had done giving Hannah a baby after all those years of waiting. Hannah worshipped God too. Listen to her prayer. Open the Bible to 1 Samuel 2:1 and read. She said: The LORD has filled my heart with joy. He has made me strong. I can laugh at my enemies. I m so glad he saved me (NIrV). Samuel continued to grow, and he faithfully served God. Every year Hannah visited him. And over time... Pick up the flip book again. Flip through several blank pages.... God gave Hannah and Elkanah five more sons and daughters. Flip through several blank pages until the end. Flip to picture of Hannah with her large family, visiting Samuel in the temple. Hannah was on to something when she prayed to God all those years and never stopped praying. Especially that day in God s house, when she didn t think she could wait any longer and she talked to God because she knew He would understand. You and I can do the same thing. 8

CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. Just because you pray about it doesn t mean you ll always get everything you want. But talking to God will help you be patient while you wait on Him to work in your life. Let s go ahead and talk to Him now. Pray HISTORYTELLER: Dear God, there are times in all of our lives when we find it hard to be patient when it s hard to wait for what we want right now. We know that when it s hard to be patient, we should talk to You about it. Thank You for caring about us, the things we need, and even the things we want. Help us to turn to You when we think we can t wait. We love You, and we ask these things in Jesus name, amen. If you have an offering with you today, raise your hand and we will bring the bucket over to you. Now, up on your feet and give some mad respect to our Power Praise team! Worship SFX: Happy Day SFX: Let It Be Known Power Praise team enters as Historyteller exits. SFX: Oceans Host enters as Power Praise Team exits. Closer HOST: Have you ever had to wait a loooooong time for something? (Pause.) What was it? Allow the kids to respond. Repeat answers like: Christmas, saving up for a toy, the first day of summer, a birthday, etc. Those are some good examples. When you re waiting for something you really want, it seems like it takes forever! Some of you might also be waiting for something that s really important, like you re waiting for one of your parents to find a new job, or someone you care about is really sick and you re waiting for them to get better. What do we do when it seems like we just can t wait anymore? It s like we said earlier. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. Say that with me. HOST and KIDS: [Bottom Line] When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. 9

HOST: Why should you talk to God about it? Well, because God loves you, and He loves to hear from you! It makes sense to talk to Him about whatever s on your mind especially the things that are worrying you or making you feel impatient. There s one thing I really want you guys to hear from me, though. Just because you talk to God doesn t mean He s going to always answer your prayers the way you expect or as quickly as you d like. Think about Hannah. She prayed for YEARS before she saw God answer her prayer. Talking to God can mean even more waiting. BUT, when you talk to God, it helps bring you closer to Him, and it helps you trust Him more, which can make the waiting just a little bit easier. One thing that also might help you is to memorize our verse for this month and say it to yourself whenever you re feeling a little bit impatient. Let s read it together now. CG: Memory Verse Slide HOST and KIDS: Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD! Psalm 27:14 (NIV). HOST: God can help you stay strong as you wait. And now it s time for you to take a road trip back to Small Group and talk about that some more! CG: Small Group Slide Dismiss children to their Small Groups. 10

Baby on Board Bible: Baby on Board (Hannah Prays for a Baby) 1 Samuel 1:6 2:1 Bottom Line: When you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. Memory Verse: Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord! Psalm 27:14, NIV Life App: Patience Waiting until later for what you want now Basic Truth: I can trust God no matter what. Groups: Creating a Safe Place to Connect (10 minutes) Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible Truth applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions. 9:00 & 11:30 Hold Your Tongue What You Need: Hand sanitizer What You Do: Let kids clean their hands with hand sanitizer. (Make sure it s fully dry before kids hold their tongues so they don t get the taste of sanitizer on their tongues!) Say the verse together as a group to review it. Then ask kids to try saying it again, but this time they have to hold onto their tongues while they say it. If time and interest allow, see if any kids want to try to say it individually while holding their tongues. What You Say: Our verse this month tells us to wait for the Lord by being strong and not losing hope. Sometimes that can be much easier said than done. What are some ways you can be strong and hopeful when you are waiting? (Pause for responses.) Those are some great ideas! One of the best ways to be strong and hopeful is to pray, because [Bottom Line] when you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. 11

10:15 Review Jumble What You Need: How To and Review Questions Activity Pages, printer paper, scissors, markers, Bibles What You Do: Hand out one How To Activity Page and a piece of plain white paper to each kid. Help kids follow the instructions on the Activity Page to make a cootie catcher with the numbers 1 through 8 written on the inside folds. When all kids have finished making their cootie catchers, let kids take turns using the cootie catcher to choose a question. To do this: o Open/close the cootie catcher one time for each letter in their first name (i.e. A-D-A-M would be four times). o When they finish, the cootie catcher should be opened up to four numbers. o Choose one of those four numbers and ask them the question from the Activity Page that aligns with that number. (Note: If the kids aren t sure of the answer, encourage them to ask a friend or to look up the story in the Bible: 1 Samuel 1:6 2:1.) o Try to pick a question that has not yet been asked. o If all the available numbers have already been asked, ask the second question listed under the number chosen. What You Say: The Bible Truth today was about a woman who wanted a baby of her very own. You are not exactly old enough to be a mom or dad, but I bet there is something you are waiting for. Whether it s spring break or your birthday or summer or a trip you have coming up or a big game, performance, or recital we all have things we are looking forward to. The important thing is to be patient as we wait for whatever it is we are looking forward to and believe that God s timing is perfect. [Make It Personal] (Tell kids about a time when you were waiting for something and you felt like it should have already happened. Were you able to wait patiently and see that God s timing is perfect? Did you grow impatient, and did it challenge your faith?) One of the best things we can do when we are trying to be patient is to pray. We can tell God what we are waiting for and why we are so excited. We can even tell Him all about how hard it is to wait. The important thing is that [Bottom Line] when you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. 12

All Service Times Pray and Dismiss (10 minutes) [Pray to God Prayer Activity] Made to Reflect: an activity that creates space for personal understanding and application What You Need: No supplies needed What You Do: Ask kids about times when they have had a hard time being patient. o If they have a hard time thinking of examples, prompt them with: sitting in traffic in the car, when someone in their family is typically always running late, or when they re waiting for a turn on playground equipment or during PE class. Tell kids that sometimes talking to God either quietly or by praying out loud can help us when we need to be patient. Pray in a quiet voice, using the guide below. What You Say: Thank you, God, for helping us get through times when we have to wait. It can be hard to be patient but, with You, we can be strong and hopeful in every situation. Help us to remember that [Bottom Line] when you think you can t wait, talk to God about it. 13
