From the Pastor We continue with our adult catechesis using the shortened form of the Catechism of the Catholic Church called the Compendium. We are now treating the article of the Apostles Creed I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church. Here are this week s three questions with the catechism s answer and my commentary. Why is the Church apostolic? The Church is apostolic in her origin because she has been built on the foundation of the apostles (Ephesians 2:20). She is apostolic in her teaching which is the same as that of the Apostles. She is apostolic by reason of her structure insofar as she is taught, sanctified, and guided until Christ returns by the Apostles through their successors who are the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter. Commentary: The Catechism points out that the Church is apostolic in three respects: with respect to her origin, her teaching, and her structure. The Church is apostolic because she is established upon the faith of the Apostles. The Church is apostolic because in every age she holds the same faith as the Apostles. The Church is apostolic because the authority of the Apostles continues to be exercised in the Church through the ministry of their successors, the bishops, in union with the successor of St. Peter, the Pope. The bishops in union with the Pope are called the Magisterium. In what does the mission of the Apostles consist? The word Apostle means one who is sent. Jesus, the One sent by the Father, called to himself twelve of his disciples and appointed them as his Apostles, making them the chosen witnesses of his Resurrection and the foundation of his Church. He gave them the command to continue his own mission saying, As the Father has sent me, even so I send you (John 20:21): and he promised to remain with them until the end of the world. Commentary: Among his first disciples, Jesus chose twelve men to be his apostles (Luke 6:13). He sent them out to the lost children of Israel, giving them authority to heal the sick and drive out demons (Matthew 10:1). After his Resurrection, he commissioned the Twelve (with Matthias taking the place of Judas Iscariot) and other men like Paul and Barnabbas who, as witnesses of his Resurrection, were also designated apostles, to makes disciples of all nations through the ministry of Word and Sacrament (Matthew 28:19-20) and govern the Church as a united body under the headship of Peter (read the account of the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15 to see how this was done). By prayer and the imposition of hands (1 Timothy 4:14), i.e., by what came later to be known as the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the apostles passed the mission and authority they had received from Christ to their successors, who were called bishops (a word that means overseer; see 1 Timothy 3:1). The mission and authority of the apostles continues to be exercised in the Church through the college of bishops in union with the Pope, the successor of Peter. What is apostolic succession? Apostolic succession is the transmission by means of the sacrament of Holy Orders of the mission and power of the Apostles to their successors, the bishops. Thanks to this transmission the Church remains in communion of faith and life with her origin, while through the centuries she carries on her apostolate for the spread of the Kingdom of Christ on earth. Commentary: The faith of the Apostles, which is preserved in Scripture and Tradition, is transmitted to subsequent generations through the Church s Magisterium, the college of bishops in union with the Pope. It is by these three realities Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium, which form an inseparable unity that the Word of God, the substance of the Apostles faith, is communicated to the Church. In Christ, Father Walter
