Guests. Welcome to Zion. We are glad to have you with us. Please sign our guestbook located in the Narthex. About Holy Communion: We celebrate this Sacrament every Sunday at Zion. We welcome to the Lord's Table all who have repented of their sins and seek to amend their sinful life; all who believe that Jesus is truly present in, with, and under the bread and the wine; and all who believe that through the words "given and shed for you" forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given. If this is your confession and a member of a Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, then come with a thankful heart and join us. See p.329, 330 in the front part of the hymnal for guidance in preparing to receive Holy Communion. We also offer gluten free wafers please notify Elder ahead of time that you would appreciate the gluten free. AS WE GATHER All three Readings today declare the depth, breadth, and height of God s love for the world. When God s people were drifting away, God sent prophets, such as Jeremiah, to speak God s Word and call the people back to faithfulness. God declares His love for Jeremiah: I formed you in the womb... I consecrated you; I appointed you... I am with you to deliver you (Jeremiah 1:5, 8). God s love is shown forth in Jesus in the Gospel. Jesus casts out a demon from a man, thereby restoring his life. Jesus heals Peter s motherin-law, and He casts out even more demons and heals more diseases. This all points to the restoration of all creation in God s coming kingdom. The Epistle, often read at weddings, calls us toward lives shaped by the depth, breadth, and height of God s love for us. Confession and Absolution Page 203 Introit for Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. Pastor: The Lord be with you People: And also with you. Collect for Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany Almighty God, You know we live in the midst of so many dangers that in our frailty we cannot stand upright. Grant strength and protection to support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 1:4 10 (The Lord calms Jeremiah s fear with a promise.) 4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. 3
6 Alas, Sovereign LORD, I said, I do not know how to speak; I am too young. 7 But the LORD said to me, Do not say, I am too young. You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you, declares the LORD. 9 Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 12:27-31 (All about love) 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. Lector: People: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Pastor: People: Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to Luke, the fourth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 4
HOLY GOSPEL Luke 4:38 44 (Jesus casts out a demon and heals Peter s mother-in-law.) 38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 5
39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. 40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, You are the Son of God! But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. 42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent. 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful. Love is the greatest of the three theological virtues because God is Love. That is why love is the fulfillment of the Law, because the Law is the reflection of God s being and God is love. St. Paul urges the Corinthians to grow in love, to grow up into the image of Christ who demonstrates what love looks like with His sacrifice on the cross. For love always seeks the good of the other, always seeks to serve, to give, to bless. The Pewpoint THEME OF THE DAY Jesus Has Authority to Forgive Your Sins and Give You Life Jesus was sent to preach the good news of the kingdom of God (Luke 4:43). His preaching is an epiphany, or manifestation, of God because His Word reveals the 7
authority of His cross and resurrection, by which He has atoned for the sins of the world. By the preaching of His Gospel in every place, He silences the unclean spirits and casts out demons, heals the diseases of body and soul, and restores life and health to His creation (Luke 4:40 41). For the sake of His divine love, He is patient and kind toward us; He bears all things, endures all things and delivers up His body to save us (1 Cor. 13:3 4, 7). So also for the sake of His love, He calls and sends His prophets, as ministers of His Word, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant (Jer. 1:10).
