February 2017 Messiah Lutheran Church Page 2 Celebrating 500 Years ~ 1517-2017 Semper Reformanda Semper Reformanda is a Latin term meaning Always reforming, or Always being reformed. It was part of the phrase that became the motto of the Reformation which began in 1517 with Martin Luther. The full motto is Ecclesia reformata semper reformanda, the Church reformed always being reformed. Hoping to generate discussion about the corruption of the medieval Church, Luther posted 95 points, or theses, to the door of his Wittenberg church, which kicked off the Protestant Reformation and a string of changes. In honor of the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation this year, the SW Conference is hosting a Reformation 500 Hymn Sing and Katie Luther Presentation on April 30, at Trinity Lutheran church, Galesburg. This promises to be a fun afternoon of singing, led by Chris Nelson, organist and Director of Music at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport, learning about the origins of several Lutheran hymns from Europe, Africa and the United States, and Katherina Von Bora Luther, presented by Judy Engebretsen. For those who missed Judy s presentation at Messiah last fall, here is your chance! Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has encouraged everyone to take a fresh look at Luther s Small Catechism during this year of celebration. We have a common language with which to talk about faith, engage Scripture and make sense of our world. Catechism is not just for the young, she stated. A study of Luther s Small Catechism will be offered beginning Sunday, March 5, at 9:00 am in the nursery. Another study will be offered during Sarah Circle meetings in March, April, May, September and October. Contact me if you wish to purchase a study copy of Luther s Small Catechism. The Northern Illinois Synod newsletter Making Christ Known is focusing on the Small Catechism during this anniversary year. Read past and current issues online at http://nisynod.org/pubs/mck: September/October 2016 Martin Luther s Small Catechism January/February 2017 The Ten Commandments March/April 2017 The Apostles Creed May/June 2017 The Lord s Prayer September/October 2017 Sacraments, Blessings, and Prayers Semper Reformanda. The church is always being reformed, and so are we as Bishop Eaton has said, The ELCA is not a dying church. We are a changing church. Plan to participate in these and other upcoming events and opportunities to embrace and learn more about our Lutheran heritage. See you in worship, Pastor Linda Winkelman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Home Ec Opportunity for the Galva Community In honor of Betty Nelle Whitman and her tireless work sewing quilts, etc. through the church, Angie Peterson is inviting all girls and boys, men and women of the Galva community who would like to learn to sew, cook, etc. to contact her. She is putting together dates and times for classes perhaps one or two per week in Luther Hall. Helpers and others willing to share their talents are needed. The church has quite a few supplies, and Angie will donate some items, but if you have something you no longer use and wish to donate, these would be welcome. Contact Angie at: 309-932-3404, 309-854-1492, toolsbaskets@mchsi.com, or contact the church.

Genetically modified organisms - GMOs - are a major topic of discussion today. Across our society, media and the Internet, a growing number of people have shared a wide range of questions and emotions on the topic, ranging from excitement and optimism to skepticism and even fear. Join the fact-based discussion led by Lynda Anderson on topics related to GMOs and their impact on our food safety, environment, agricultural sustainability and health.
