Psalm 27:1

PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ As we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent today on March 17 th, I want to make sure to wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick s Day (because I might be in trouble if I forget to do that!) And because the other big feast day this week is St. Joseph s Day on March 19 th, I wish you a Happy St. Joseph s Day too. This Sunday we enter into the second full week of our Lenten journey, and as we do, it s good for us to remember that one of the important aspects of Lent is the RCIA process (Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults). Some significant RCIA events take place during Lent. For example, on this Sunday a ernoon, March 17 th, our RCIA catechumen Heather Cowieson will par cipate in the Rite of Elec on at Holy Name Cathedral. All of the RCIA catechumens (unbap zed) and candidates (already bap zed) from around the Archdiocese take part in the Rite of Elec on. At this ceremony they are presented to Cardinal Cupich, who formally elects and welcomes them as candidates for the Easter sacraments of ini a on. Please pray for Heather, her sponsor Larry, and her family as she journeys closer to being fully ini ated in the Catholic Church. This week I also want to make sure to thank the many parishioners including members of our Parish Council, Women s Club, and Knights of Columbus who helped with our Lenten Mission and recep on last Monday, March 11 th (the Mission was actually on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, but we hosted the first night here at St. Beatrice). I am very grateful to all those who helped make the evening possible, as well as successful. And thank you to those of you who took the me to a end the Mission, whether for one, two, or all three evenings. I hope that it will be helpful for you on your Lenten journey. And because Lent has to do with making more room for God s grace in our hearts to help us carry our cross, this is why I encourage everyone to consider following the Way of the Cross with us during Lent. We pray the Sta ons of the Cross at 6:30pm every Friday evening, followed by Eucharis c Benedic on (please note the me change this year to 6:30pm). I invite you to join us on any Friday night for this beau ful Lenten devo on. Finally, I wanted to give you an update on the progress of our 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). If you remember, I men oned that a er the first weekend (the Commitment Weekend), we were only about halfway to our goal of $16,367. The good news is that on the second weekend of the ACA (the Follow-Up Weekend), we actually received more pledges than on the first weekend (you see, I know that promo ng the ACA for several weeks might seem like overkill, but it does work!) We currently have $19,485 in pledges (not in money collected, mind you, but in pledges). The other piece of good news is that this total does not reflect any pledges that were sent in by mail or were made online we will get those numbers from the Archdiocese a er they process them. So, I know that our pledge amount will climb even higher. And remember, every dollar that we collect beyond the goal comes back to St. Beatrice, so it looks like we re on track to get an ACA rebate later this year. Thank you to everyone who has pledged! St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

Second Sunday of Lent Lent is a call not just to give up something but more important to give something for the poor. Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor. During Lent, find: Sanctus, Sanctus (Holy, Holy), #178, Page #200 Lord s Prayer, #27, Page #32 Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), #183, Page#202 PAGE THREE TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, many may have failed in Lenten discipline to some measure or another: the daily doughnut is simply too alluring, or a furtive puff on a cigarette irresistible. There is meaning even in the failure, though, a kind of reminder that we cannot save ourselves. Part of the power of Lent is that we do it together, and although individuals decide on different ways to keep it, it is fundamentally the same journey. We fall, we get up, we keep moving. The desire to give something up for Lent is an ageold impulse in the Christian heart. We get better at it over the years, and move more deeply into the meaning and message of acts of sacrifice; so there is no shame in stumbling, as long as we are not discouraged by the failure and give up. We are clearing space in our lives, after all, and some of the things we desire to give up are worth rooting out completely anyway. What do we do with the space we have cleared out by our sacrifice? The Lenten question of giving up is balanced by the Easter question of our response to Christ s embrace of us in love: What are you taking on for Easter? James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world with almost two million members in over 1,600 parishes. Ave Maria council is blessed with Pastor s at St. Beatrice and St. Gertrude s who support the Knights. Our council is growing with a wonderful group of various ages and talent. We invite you to come join us and share your special gift for Jesus. All practicing Catholic men are welcome. What We re Learning 1st Grade We learned that Lent is the time we prepare ourselves for Easter when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus. The season of Lent lasts 40 days beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on the evening of Holy Thursday. During Lent we grow closer to God through prayer and by living the way God wants us to live. 2 nd Grade We talked about Ash Wednesday and the significance of receiving ashes. We learned that Lent is a time to change our lives and examine how we are living and what we can do to live in a way that is pleasing to Jesus. We read in the Book of Exodus about Moses and the burning bush. We learned that God told him to remove his sandals because he was on holy ground. We learned that Moses was chosen to free the people of Israel from Egypt.
