Introduction Encouraging One Another Christians are commanded to encourage one another inside and outside of assemblies A friend of mine in AA told me, The way an alcoholic stays sober is to keep another alcoholic sober. Parallels the Lord s church the way a Christian remains faithful is to encourages other Christians to remain faithful In what way should we encourage one another? 2 Introduction Not only have relationship with God but with one another When we worship together and when we are apart, God demands we encourage one another to faithfulness Great problem not taking time and effort to encourage one another 3 Introduction Further problem Christians refusing to be spiritually encouraged but following after the world Many local churches have also substituted a social encouragement that ranks above the spiritual encouragement demanded of us If we are not giving and receiving encouragement to faithfulness to see the Lord, we are failing 4 Encouraging One Another Encouraging one another in our assemblies Encouraging one another in our daily lives Heb 10:19 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, Heb 10:20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, Heb 10:21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 5 6

Heb 10:22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; Heb 10:24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, Heb 10:25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. 7 8 Heb 10:26 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, Heb 10:27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES. Heb 10:28 Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the Heb 10:29 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? Heb 10:30 For we know Him who said, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY." And again, "THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE." testimony of two or three witnesses. 9 10 Heb 10:31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 11 Christians warned not to forsake assembling together One purpose of assembling together to encourage one another to love and good deeds Each day we are to appreciate our relationship with the Lord produced by Jesus perfect sacrifice and priesthood that we might have access to the Father and hope of heaven 12

Our assembling together is an opportunity for us to mutually share encouragement to greater faithfulness that we may be strengthened to live the Christian life Reason many are not encouraged by assembling with saints is they are not focused on being faithful to the Lord through obedience to his Word We encourage one another by setting an example of faithfulness and speaking God s Word to one another in love Any encouragement detached from the Word of God is not the kind the Christian should practice 13 14 1Ti 4:12 Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. 1Ti 4:13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. 1Ti 4:14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. 1Ti 4:15 Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. 15 16 1Ti 4:16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you. Eph 4:14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; Eph 4:15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 17 18

Eph 4:16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. 1Th 2:7 But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. 1Th 2:8 Having so fond an affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us. 19 20 1Th 2:9 For you recall, brethren, our labor and hardship, how working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. 1Th 2:10 You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers; 1Th 2:11 just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, 1Th 2:12 so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. 21 22 1Th 2:13 For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe. 23 Assembled On Sundays and Daily At Times Act 20:7 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight. Act 19:9 But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 24

Our assembling together is made more encouraging when we apply encouraging one another on a daily basis Too often, Christians are so caught up in the world they have little time or interest in either giving or receiving spiritual encouragement Heb 3:12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. Heb 3:13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 25 26 Heb 3:14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, Heb 3:15 while it is said, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME." Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Gal 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 27 28 Jas 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Then he must pray. Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises. Jas 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; Jas 5:15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. Jas 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. 29 30

Jas 5:17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. Jas 5:18 Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit. Jas 5:19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, Jas 5:20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. 31 32 Encouraging One Another Encouraging one another in our assemblies Encouraging one another in our daily lives 33
