ON THE DAY OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD. PROCESSIONAL HYMN. The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter's night that was so deep. Refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Refrain And by the light of that same star three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Refrain This star drew nigh to the northwest, o'er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay right over the place where Jesus lay. Refrain Then entered in those wise men three full reverently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Refrain 1

Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord; that hath made heaven and earth of nought, and with his blood mankind hath bought. Refrain INTROIT. Puer natus est. Isa. 9. UNTO us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: * and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his Name shall be callèd, Angel of mighty Counsel. Ps. 97. O sing unto the Lord a new song: * for the Lord hath done marvellous things.. Glory. COLLECT. Of the Nativity. GRANT, we beseech thee, Almîghty God: that we who through our ancient bondage are held beneath the yoke of sîn: may by the new birth of thine only-begotten Son in the flesh obtain deliverance. Through the same. The LESSON from Isaiah the Prophet. Isa. 9:2-7. THE people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil. For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian. For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government 2

and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. GRADUAL. Ps. 97. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God: * Shout with jubilation unto God, all ye lands.. The Lord declarèd his salvation: * his righteousness hath he openly showèd in the sight of the heathen. The Lesson from the EPISTLE of blessèd Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews. Heb. 1:1-12. BELOVED: God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets: hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds: who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high; being made so much better than the Angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the Angels said he at any time: Thou art my Son, this day have I begôtten thee? And again: I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to mê a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the first-begotten into the world, he saith: And let all the Angels of God worship him. And of the Angels he saith: Who maketh his Angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. But unto the Son he saith: Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom: thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity: therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. And: Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid 3

the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: they shall perish, but thou remainest: and they all shall wax old as doth a garment: and as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed; but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. ALLELUIA, alleluia.. Trad. A hallowèd day hath dawnèd upon us: come, all ye nations, and worship the Lord: * for on this day a great Light hath descended upon the earth. Alleluia. The Beginning of the HOLY GOSPEL accôrding to John. St. John 1:1-14. IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and thê Word was God. The same was in the begînning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing mâde that was made. In him was life, and the life was thê light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehênded it not. There was a man sent from God, whôse name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through hîm might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witnêss of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh înto the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the wôrld knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own recêivèd him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of mân, but of God. (Here the celebrant and all bow profoundly.) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (Rise.) and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the onlybegotten of the Father, full of gräce and truth. 4

OFFERTORY. Ps. 88. The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: thou hast laid the foundation of the whole world, and all that therein is: * justice and judgment are the pedestal of thy throne. HYMN. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; come, and behold him, born the King of angels; Refrain: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. God of God, Light of Light, lo! he abhors not the Virgin's womb; Very God, begotten not created; Refrain Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; glory to God, glory in the highest; Refrain See how the shepherds, summoned to his cradle, leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze; we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps; Refrain Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger, we would embrace thee, with love and awe; who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? Refrain 5

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing; Refrain SECRET. Of the Nativity. SANCTIFY, O Lord, by the new birth of thine only-begotten Son, the gifts whîch we offer: and cleanse us from the defilement of our iniquities. Through the same. PREFACE. Of the Nativity of Christ, IT is truly meet and right, our joy and salvation, that we should always, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God: Because by the Mystery of the Incarnate Word the new light of thy glory hath shone upon the eyes of our mind: that while we visibly acknowledge God, we may through him be caught up to the love of things invisible. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the host of the heavenly army, / we sing the hymn of thy glory, evermore saying: And then the Sanctus is sung. And in the Canon the proper Communicántes Prayer - And celebrating the most sacred day - is said. COMMUNION. Ps. 97. All the ends of the earth have seen: * the salvation of our God. 6

HYMN. Of the Father's love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending he, of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, At his word they were created; he commanded; it was done: heaven and earth and depths of ocean in their threefold order one; all that grows beneath the shining of the light of moon and sun, O that birth for ever blessèd, when the Virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bare the Savior of our race; and the Babe, the world's Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, O ye heights of heaven, adore him; angel-hosts, his praises sing; powers, dominions, bow before him, and extol our God and King; let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert ring, 7

This is he whom seers and sages Sang of old with one accord; whom the writings of the prophets promised in their faithful word; now he shines, the long expected, let creation praise its Lord, Hail, thou Judge of souls departed! Hail, thou King of them that live! On the Father s throne exalted None in might with thee may strive, Who at last in judgement coming Sinners from thy face shalt drive, Now let old and young men s voices, Join with boys thy name to sing; matrons, virgins, little maidens, in glad voices answering: let their guileless songs re-echo, and the heart its praises bring, Christ, to thee with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to thee, hymn and chant and high thanksgiving, and unwearied praises be; honor, glory and dominion, and eternal victory, 8

POSTCOMMUNION. Of the Nativity. GRANT, we beseech thee, Almîghty God: that like as thy Son, born this day the Saviour of the world, is the author of our heavenly bîrth; so he may likewise bestow on us the gift of everlasting life: Who liveth. At the Last Gospel is read the Gospel of the Feast of the Epiphany: The Continuation of the HOLY GOSPEL accordîng to Matthew. St. Matt. 2:1-12. WHEN Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea, in the days of Herod the king: behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying: Where is he that is born King ôf the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east: and are come tô worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things: he was troubled, and all Jerusâlem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them, where Chrîst should be born. And they said unto him: In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet: And thou, Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princês of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor that shall rule my peoplê Israèl. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the stâr appearèd. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said: Go, and search diligently for the young Child: and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worshîp him also. When they had heard the king, thêy departed: and lo, the star which they saw in the east went before them, till it came and stood over where thê young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with excêeding great joy. And when 9

they were come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary his mother (Here the celebrant and all bow profoundly.), and fell down and wôrshippèd him (Rise). And when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankîncense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod: they departed into their own country anöther way. RECESSIONAL HYMN. Hark, the herald-angels sing glory to the new-born King, peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies; with the angelic host proclaim, 'Christ is born in Bethlehem.' Hark, the herald-angels sing glory to the new-born King. Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh the Godhead see: hail, the incarnate Deity, pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark, the herald-angels sing glory to the new-born King. 10

Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace: hail, the Sun of Righteousness. Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth. Hark, the herald-angels sing glory to the new-born King. Come, Desire of nations, come, fix in us thy humble home; rise, the woman's conquering seed, bruise in us the serpent's head; now display thy saving power, fallen nature now restore, now in mystic union join thine to ours and ours to thine. Hark, the herald-angels sing glory to the new-born King. 11
