Assurance and Confidence Four things that we are to know 1Jn 5:11-15 July 9, 2017 1Jn 5:11-15 11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. 1. Assurance of salvation (eternal life). God wants us to know that we have eternal life 1Jn 5:11-13 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. Eternal life is a free gift from God. Rom 6:23 the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 1Jn 2:25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life. (Jn 3:14-18; 5:24 6:47; 10:27-29) 1Jn 5:11-12 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. Eternal life is received by accepting Jesus into your heart. Jn 1:12-13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 1Cor 6:17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. Rev 3:20'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. 2Cor 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. (Jn 3:5; Gal 6:15; Col 3:9-10) 2Cor 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test? Sin does not disqualify us from receiving this free gift. 1Jn 2:1-2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. (1Jn 1:8-10)

Rom 5:6-10 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (Eph 1:7; Col 1:13; Gal 1:4; Mt 26:28; Rev 1:5; Heb 9:14;) 2. The purpose of the Bible. 1Jn 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. Jn 5:39-40 "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. Jn 20:30-31 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. 3. Confidence in prayer; our prayer(s) will be answered 1Jn 5:14-15 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. "Confidence" is a theme in 1Jn. 1 Jn 2:28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. 1Jn 3:21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 1Jn 4:17 By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. 1Jn 5:14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. Confidence is the boldness, freedom we have to approach God Heb 4:16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Heb 10:19-22 Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, (Heb 10:19-25) Asking according to His will ask = prayer anything Jn 14:13-14 Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

Jn 15:7 "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. Jn 16:23-24... if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full. Mk 11:24 Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you. Mt 7:7-8 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. (Mt 7:7-11; Lk 11:9-13 Mt 18:19;... if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask,... Mt 21:22 And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive. Lk 18:1 Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, (Lk 18:1-8) prayer is not asking for our will, but asking for God s will in our lives 1Jn 3:22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. Mt 6:10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Mk 14:36... remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will. 4. The will (thelēma) of God Jesus fulfilled and lived in the will of God Jesus came to fulfill the Father s plan and will (Calvary). Mt 26:42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done. (Jn 7:17-18; Lk 22:42) Jesus came to do the Father s will Jn 4:34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work." (Jn 5:30; 6:38; Heb 10:7-10) We are sanctified Heb 10:10 By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (1Thes 4:3) Eternal life God s will is for none to perish 2Pt 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise,..., not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance (1Tim 2:4; Mt 18:14; 1Jn 2:17) Redemption is the will of God. Eph 1:11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will (Eph. 1:5; 1:9; Jas 1:18) The Father s will is for all to believe in (Jesus) the Son. Jn 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent. (Jn 1:12-13)

The Father s will is the resurrection. Jn 6:39-40 This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day. Prayer Jesus taught us to pray for God's will in our lives. Mt 6:9-10 "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 'Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. (Lk 11:2) The believer's key to answered prayer is asking according to His will. 1Jn 5:14-15 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him. (Jn 9:31) Prayer and giving of thanks 1Thes 5:17-18 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1Thes 5:16-18) Sanctification Sanctification and living free from all immorality. 1Thes 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; Deliverance from this evil world is the will of God. Gal 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, God's will for our life is to be filled with His knowledge and wisdom. Col 1:9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, Transformation is the will of God. Rom 12:1-2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Living filled with the Spirit is the will of God Eph 5:17-18 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, (Eph 5:17-21) Working, like we are serving Christ is God's will in our employment. Eph 6:6 not by way of eye service, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. (Eph 6:5-9) We are to stand in the will of God Col 4:12... that you may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God. Suffering We are to live for the will of God and embrace suffering 1Pt 4:19 Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right (1Pt 3:17; 4:2)

Miscellaneous The Father reveals His will to those who are willing to do His will. Jn 7:17 "If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. We are to seek the will of God in ministry; the apostle Paul is our example. Rom 1:10 always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you. (Rom 15:32; 2Cor 1:1; Eph 1:1; Col 1:1; 2Tim 1:1; Ac 22:14-15) Doing the will of God enables us to receive God's promises Heb 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. (1Jn 2:17) Doing right is the will of God. 1Pt 2:15... is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. Doing God s will makes one a brother and sister with Jesus Mk 3:35 For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother. (Mt 12:50) How we discover the will of God: Surrender your will to His Lk 22:42... not My will, but Yours be done. Seeking the mind of the Lord through prayer Psa 143:8 Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning; For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul. The Bible Psa 40:7-8 Then I said, Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me. 8 I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart. Providential circumstances Ac 16:6-10 They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; 7 and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them; 8 and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9 A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing and appealing to him, and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." 10 When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. (Ac 17:10:29; 2Co 2:12-13; Rev 3:7) Until He leads us elsewhere, you are to: Stay where you are 1Cor 7:20 Each man must remain in that condition in which he was called. Contentment Phil 4:11 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.
