Congregation: But we are just ordinary folks. Who will listen? Leader: I will give you the words. I will always be with you as you speak my words of truth and justice and love. Congregation: We gather here to worship you, to praise you for your loving presence, and to be strengthened for the calling you have given us. HYMN: #8 All People That on Earth do Dwell [verse 1-3]

OPENING PRAYER (in unison) O God, in the midst of the cacophony of voices that crush our spirit and deny our calling, voices that say, Who do you think you are? We come to hear your voice of affirmation; we come to hear your voice calling us to be and do what you have called us to be and do. Let this time of worship quiet our fears, soothe our bruised souls, and energize us for ministry in and with your beloved world. Let faith abide. Let hope abide. Let love abide here in this sanctuary, here in our community, here in our world, but most of all, here in us. Amen. We thank you that at the right time you sent Jesus Christ, born of Mary, to live in our midst, to share in our suffering, and to accept the pain of death because of his love. We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to gather your Church by which

your work may be done in the world and through which we share the gift of eternal life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with angels and archangels, and with your sons and daughters of faith in all places and times, we celebrate your glory by singing your praise. Weekly Prayer Morning God, you make old things pass away, and declare new things to be. As I am renewed in my baptism this morning, help me to confirm my baptismal vows in my life today. Amen. Evening Holy One, you stretched out the heavens and spread out the earth, and in that context, I give you this small day that I have lived. Now may I sleep, safe and secure in your covenant promise to me that I am your beloved child, in whom you are well pleased, Amen. 2009-01-07 I ll tell you what: it s not the menu here that fulfills any deep human longing BIBLE PASSAGE John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. The Baptism of Our Lord, Series B
