Maybe we ve said them. They capture some element of truth yet they also miss the point in very important ways. Join us on Sundays in September as we break down these Half Truths Moses confronting Pharoah. The Israelites crossing the Red Sea. Jesus speaking about Tyre and Sidon. These are all stories that we are familiar with and have heard since we were small children. After hearing them so many times and eventually reading them in our own Bibles, they start to take on a mythical quality, a "long ago and far away" kind of feel. Their settings are so foreign to us, so different from what we are used to, that they might as well have taken place in Narnia or Middle Earth! Because of these differences, we forget that the lands of the Bible are real places, where real people live their real lives. This month I will be travelling with the American Baptist Churches USA to Lebanon and Egypt for ten days. We are going to be visiting Tyre and Sidon, the land of the Pharoahs, and the home of the great cedars of Lebanon. We will see the history of the Bible come alive as we walk where they walked and we see what they saw. I have heard that you can never read the Bible the same way after you have seen where it took place, and I am so excited to get this opportunity! But we are also going to be visiting refugee camps, a Baptist seminary, and groups of pastors working in Lebanon and Egypt now. God is still working in these nations, and I am also excited to get to see what God is doing there now! I can't wait to get back to you all to share my experiences and what I have learned and be able to convey how God is working with our partners in very different and far-away places. Thank you all for this opportunity, and please be praying for us as we travel. In Christ, Pastor John 1

SLT MINUTES AUGUST 2018 SLT Meeting Minutes, August 13, 2018 Jon Mayo opened the meeting. Ernie presented devotions on breaking down barriers so that we never make it difficult for others to find Jesus. Minutes of the July SLT meeting were approved by unanimous consent. Financial results were discussed. For the year, expenses still exceed revenues by slightly more than $1,000. July was a better month for contributions. Pastor Scott outlined the plans for the block party to be held Wednesday August 29. He is expecting 250 or more to attend, and needs lots of volunteers from our church. There will be music, food and games. Promotion Sunday will be September 2 for the kids moving into the 7 th grade this upcoming school year. Bibles will be presented in the worship service. Wednesday night activities will begin September 5, including dinner, Kids Club and Frontlines. Adult Bible Study will begin September 19, after Pastor John s trip. As before, dinner will be a potluck every third Wednesday of the month beginning September 19. The ABC/Nebraska Region has a new leadership training program, for juniors and seniors in high school, called LIT+. Eight to twelve will be chosen from Nebraska, who will attend three weekends during the year at a leadership retreat. Pastor Scott is assisting the Region in developing the core training. The Region staff is also working on a youth leader volunteer training workshop which will probably involve a weekend retreat. Joshua 1:6-9 Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. This is my command be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Pastor Scott asked the SLT to help bring momentum up in the church by emphasizing our church purpose and vision. Our church Ministry Fair will be August 19. Materials on spiritual gifts and appropriate volunteer activities will be on tables in the narthex. 3

SLT MINUTES AUGUST CONTINUED 2018 Pastor John will begin a sermon series on Half Truths in September, for five weeks. We will hand out flyers at the block party to invite those in our community who might find this topic of interest. Pastor John is considering two series of material for the Wednesday night adult Bible Study, a series on spiritual disciplines made easy from the American Baptist ABHMS organization, and videos from The Bible Project. The SLT discussed a Celebration Service to be held in late September, which Pastor John proposed. Various ideas of how to include the Benson community were discussed, including providing a meal. The SLT approved spending up to $2000 on the event, and named a planning committee to include Deb and Jim Newell, Pastor John, Jon Mayo, and Ryan Carlson. Jon Mayo is reviewing the list of members being considered for inactivation. The SLT will review the list and consider action at a later meeting when all SLT member comments have been returned to Jon. The church business meeting will be held September 16 after the morning service. Items to be presented and discussed include the Church Clerk vacancy, finances, and upcoming events. The SLT approved a change to the policy for distributing church keys. Requests can go to either pastor or to the head of the property committee. Completed request forms will go to the church office. Jon Mayo is still working on contacting members who might be interested in the Church Clerk position. Education has hired Mallory s mother as a Nursery worker for Sunday morning to assist Mallory, since her co-worker left. Property has replaced the lock and handle on the Nursery door as a safety concern. New members: Tracy Garrison Next SLT Meeting: Monday, September 10, 2018, 7:00pm Ernie Denniston, Secretary PRAYER CONCERNS Prayers for those with medical issues and recovering. Your enemies cringe before your mighty power. Everything on earth will worship you; they will sing your praises, shouting your name in glorious songs. Come and see what our God has done, what awesome miracles he performs for people! He made a dry path through the Red Sea, and his people went across on foot. There we rejoiced in him. For by his great power he rules forever. He watches every movement of the nations; let no rebel rise in defiance. 5
