He Came Riding on a Donkey VU 124 2
He came riding on a donkey, he came riding into town, slow and easy kind of lowly he came riding with the dawn. His disciples walked beside him, staying close, a little shy; 3
Not too sure where he would guide them, onto live or on to die. But all the morning sang his praises; waking birds and dancing wind; here he is, the Son of David, riding on to take his throne. 4
Then the children gathered, singing shouts of laughter, bursting cheer; in the streets their song was ringing, Hosannas filled the morning aid. Time adults strained to see him, 5
Caught the Spirit, joined the song; spread their cloaks along before him, branches flashing in the sun. So all the city sang his praises, waking streets and dancing crowd. 6
Here he is, the Son of David; our Messiah, Son of God. 7
In our fasting, and our feasting, called to follow in his way; called to walk his road to Easter, called to live his cross today. Hosanna to the Son of David, hosanna in the heavens above; 8
Blessed is he who comes to save us, blessed is he who brings his love. Let us join to sing his praises; open hearts and souls to God; he is with us, Son of David, God s Messiah, Christ the Lord. 9
We follow the Christ who calls us into the wilderness. We follow the Christ who says, Take up the cross. We follow the Christ who summons us to new life. Let us worship and be strengthened to follow 10
11
God of infinite power, we praise you for Jesus Christ, who came riding into the city of Jerusalem on a lowly beast, victorious through love and not through violence. 12
Help us to learn the meaning of power and of glory through Christ, who, through being one with you, took on the form of a servant and shared our human life and this world s sufferings. Amen. 13
14
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. 15
Give us today our daily bread.forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil 16
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. 17
18
In our call to follow you, we often try to hide our falling. Holy Spirit, come, walk with us tomorrow, take us as disciples washed and wakened by your calling. Take us by the hand and lead us, lead us through the desert sands, bring us living water, Holy Spirit, come. 19
In this offering, we freely give a portion of our resources for your work, O God, that some may be comforted, that some may be challenged, that all may be healed. Receive what we bring this day, in Jesus name. Amen. 20
21
Ride on, ride on, the time is right: the roadside crowds scream with delight; palm branches mark the pilgrim way where beggars squat and children play. 22
Ride on, ride on, your critics wait, intrigue and rumour circulate; new lies abound in word and jest, and truth becomes a suspect guest. 23
24
25
An upper room did our Lord prepare for those he loved until the end: and his disciples still gather there to celebrate their risen Friend. 26
27
A lasting gift Jesus gave his own: to share his bread, his loving cup. Whatever burdens may bow us down, he by his cross shall lift us up. 28
29
Go to dark Gethsemane, you that feel the tempter's power; your Redeemer's conflict see; watch with him one bitter hour; turn not from his grief away: learn from him to watch and pray. 30
31
See him at the judgement hall, beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned; see him meekly bearing all; love to all his soul sustained. Shun not suffering, shame, or loss: learn from Christ to bear the cross. 32
33
Such love pure as the whitest snow, such love weeps for the shame I know such love paying the debt I owe. O Jesus, such love. 34
35
Such love, stilling my restlessness; such love, filling my emptiness such love, showing me holiness, O Jesus, such love. 36
37
Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? 38
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? 39
40
41
Such love springs from eternity; such love, streaming through history, such love, fountain of life to me; O Jesus, such love. 42
43
May the God of hope, the Christ of compassion, and the Spirit of truth accompany you as you journey through this Holy Week. May it be so. 44
