St Catherine of Siena T: 9743 2166 E: principal@scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au NEWSLETTER W: www.scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au Term 3, Week 1 July 20th 2018 A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians: You have been stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit of the Promise, the pledge of our inheritance which brings freedom for those whom God has taken for his own, to make his glory praised. Let us pray for ourselves, for each other and for our world in this ancient prayer to the Holy Spirit: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, enkindle in them the fire of your love, send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth. Amen. Dear Families, We are in the final stages of preparation for Confirmation. This Saturday students from St Dominic s school and St Luke s (Children from non Catholic schools) will celebrate Confirmation at St Catherine of Siena Church. Students from St Catherine s will be celebrating Confirmation next Saturday, July 28th at 12pm or 3pm. Please keep all of these students in your prayers as they take this very important step in their faith journey. Carmel wrote to you in the last newsletter about her visit to Nashville, Tennessee to be present and represent our school community as Sr Maria Joy makes her final vows. I encourage you to visit and explore The Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia website in order to learn more about the process of formation for a Dominican Sister, to learn about consecrated life and to see photos of our Sisters and where they come from in Nashville. Last term, one of our Art teachers, Mrs Yvette Christoe accepted a position at a school closer to her home and will therefore not be returning to St Catherine s. We thank Yvette for all that she contributed to St Catherine of Siena school community. We will miss her creativity and energy and we wish her all the very best in her future endeavours. Ms Megan Humphries has been employed as the new part-time Art teacher. We hope Megan s time at St Catherine s will be professionally and personally enriching. I would like to remind you that St Catherine s follows SunSmart recommendations and we do not wear hats for sun protection when UV levels are low (usually from May to mid-august). Students will be asked to begin wearing their hats when outside from Week 5 of this term, Monday August 13th. Please ensure that the children have a school hat by this date. You can purchase new hats from the uniform shop in the school hall which is open on Monday and Wednesday mornings 8:30-9:00am. Assunta Iacovino DEPUTY PRINCIPAL School Closure Days To assist with you with planning supervision for your children please take note of our school closure days for 2018. Welcome to term 3. I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday break and have returned to school ready for another busy term. This week the children and staff have been settling back into routines and keeping warm. Each class has used Circle Time to share their holiday stories and develop relationship skills. Our school expectations are visited daily and are displayed throughout the whole school. These expectations are embedded from Prep and a common language is used by staff and students to ensure our school is happy and safe. This term we have introduced Our School Consequences banners to coincide with Our School Expectations banners. Just like our expectations, the Consequence Banner will be displayed around the whole school to establish a consistency when dealing with poor choices. Through Social and Emotional Learning this term the children will develop an understanding that no one is perfect, that everyone makes mistakes and that we should not be afraid to make mistakes, but it is important to accept responsibility and consequences. The children will also take part in activities that emphasise that hearing the word no can be frustrating, however we need to understand and respect why. Furthermore, when we accept responsibility and consequences we show how much we are growing up and becoming more mature. I look forward to working with the students/staff and parents this term to ensure everyone at St Catherine of Siena is happy and safe (and accountable) Have a happy week. What a great first week back of Term 3! The children have had a great rest and enjoyed themselves over the holidays and have had fun sharing their holiday adventures at OSHClub. This week we have immersed ourselves in winter and all things winter and cold! The children have made snowmen/women, snowflakes and learnt that each individual snowflake is as unique as all of us as not one flake is the same, learnt about animals that live in cold environments like Antarctica or the Arctic and made winter trees and learnt why they lose their leaves. We ve learnt a new game, hospital tiggy and dodgeball and enjoyed our favourites like silent ball, Night at the Museum and Down Town Tiggy. Just a friendly reminder of the importance of signing your child in to OSHClub. Knowing that your child is safe and looked after is on the forefront of every parents mind, and, having them booked in to OSHClub so that our program staff are aware they need to be here is very important in this process. Please use our website or give the program a call if you require care on the day or even visit our friendly staff! Please note our Before School Care program begins each morning at 6.50am. **IMPORTANT** Please ensure you or any of your emergency contacts bring in your I.D and mobile phone if you are new to the service.
