summary report the future of power Aurangabad - February 2013 A series of exclusive conversations exploring the 'shifts in power' and their impact on leadership in the 21st Century

Aurangabad was founded in 1610 A.D. by Malik Ambar, the Prime Minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar. With its capture by the imperial troops in 1633 it came under the possession of the Moghals and Prince Aurangzeb later renamed it Aurangabad. It remained a part of Nizam's princely Hyderabad State until its annexation into Indian Union and thereafter a part of Hyderabad state of India until 1956. In 1960 it became a part of Maharashtra state. The city is a tourist hub, surrounded with many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as Bibi Ka Maqbara, a replica of the Taj Mahal. It is known as the City of Gates, with 52 gates throughout the city. The Ajanta Caves consist of 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments date from 2 BCE to about 480 or 650 CE, and said to be the finest surviving examples of Indian art, particularly painting. The 34 Ellora Caves were excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills between 5th - 10th century. The 12 Buddhist, 17 Hindu and 5 Jain caves, built in proximity, demonstrate the religious harmony prevalent during this period of Indian history. The city was a major silk and cotton textile production centre. A fine blend of silk with locally grown cotton was developed as Himroo textile. Paithani silk saris are also made in Aurangabad. It is a classic example of efforts of the state government towards balanced industrialisation of state. The Maharashtra Centre for Entrepreneurship Development's main office is in Aurangabad. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Aurangabad Overview... In a beautiful spacious room at the Taj Hotel, 44 participants, facilitated by Marc Fourcade from France, went deeply into the purpose of power and its true meaning. It was quite well summed up by Ram Bhogle, MD, Nirlep Group, "We have not generally thought of ourselves as powerful but empowered. Only God really has power. When we think that we are powerful, we become destructive. A nation is usually equated with their consumption, but consumption is destruction. We used to respect minimum consumption. Progress is not consumption. We should not be misled by this word power. The next evening at the Sant Tukaram Natya Mandir, through a Talk Show hosted by Anthony Phelips from the UK and inspiring speakers, further depths were reached. The evening was opened by a wonderful performance by Nritya Zhankar Academy followed by Nizar Juma, an Industrialist from Kenya and Initiator of 'the future of power' dialogues, "My life upgraded when I adopted spirituality. We need a higher conscious in our every day life, especially being aware of not giving sorrow. We need to raise our self esteem." The Chief Guest, Mr Rajesh Tope, Minister for Higher and Technical Education stated, "Real power lies at the bottom of the pyramid. The person whose role is important affects those in power. My leave has less impact than that of our teachers so who is powerful." Sister Jayanti, the European Director of the BKs as well as their Representative at the UN in Geneva spoke of the need for the emergence of feminine qualities in both men and women. "The founder of the Brahma Kumaris trained a group of youth, but specifically women, and specifically in spiritual education. Only in India are the Shiv Shaktis worshipped. Vijay Rahatkar, General Secretary, BJP National Women's Wing, "The Brahma Kumaris have been a catalyst in reminding us of our spiritual roots. If I take these powers into my political work, it will make me more efficient." Usha Mehra, IAS, "Our vedas are full of teachings of soft power but we had not thought the world can be led by soft power. We know the ways, we have the laws, but institutions like the BKs need to penetrate the youth as fast as possible. They are the world's best resource, the future leaders." Elizabeth Padilla, singer and former actress from San Francisco, besides thrilling the audience with both Hindi and English songs, shared her observations of the present time, "The powers we used to look up to, especially in the USA, are now cracking. 50% of India is under 30, outsourcing is coming to India. This is our future."
