The Life of Obedience Welcome to Nehemiah Kids! Nehemiah Kids (N.K.) will help you develop some very important steps to growing in your faith and to understanding who God is and what His plans are for your life. Did you know that the Creator of the universe, God, wants to spend time with you? It s true! He wants to spend time with YOU. Jeremiah 33:3 says, Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. He is never too busy for you. He is always there, 24/7 (twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week). Part of walking with God is learning how to spend time with Him each day. This is called a quiet time. You will want to spend time with Him in prayer and Bible study every day for strength and encouragement. Read the instructions on the following pages to learn how to get started. It will be best for you to use the New International Version of the Bible as you work through this workbook. For the next eighteen weeks, you will discover how special you are to God. Remember, God gave His Son for you. Starting Nehemiah Kids: 4th Grade, Fall Session Start with Week One, and do all of the following steps every day. First, read the topic definition for the week, then work on learning your memory verse. Next, pray on the armor of God. This will prepare you for hearing God s voice as you do your devotional each day. It will also help you live for Jesus throughout the day. The devotional comes next. There is a devotional for every day of the week (you can write the day of the week on the blank line at the beginning of each day s lesson). Do one devotional each day. If you get behind, use your extra day to catch up. Remember, you are developing a daily quiet time with God. When you are ready to pray, turn to the Prayer Journal for ideas on how to pray each day. Use this daily guide to help you pray more effectively. Write down your requests and the date, then write the date when God answers your prayers. Day 6 is special. Read the next section to see what it is all about. Parent Talk: Developing a Christian Worldview Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (Deuteronomy 6:7) There are many beliefs in our world. These beliefs can be considered a person s worldview. A worldview is how a person determines what they believe about who they are as a person, their purpose for being here on Earth, what they believe to be truth, what they believe about family, and how they view the needs of the world around them. For the Christian, our view of all these things is guided by what the Bible says. As Christians we look at things differently because we have a tool that guides us God s Word. On sunny days, some people wear sunglasses to filter out the sun s rays. They find it easier to see with sunglasses on bright days. As we live in the world, we need to have a filter to help us determine what is right and wrong. It is like putting on sunglasses to block out the sun. So the believer takes up the Bible to block out those views that do not line up with God s Word. In every situation we face, we should put on our Bible glasses to view our world in light of God s Word. Our decisions and our lives should be directly in line with the Bible. Parents, take this time each week to sit down with your child and talk with them about what God s Word says about the topic of the week. Strive to develop a Christian worldview in your child. This will be a great time of teaching your child and seeing what they have already learned. Make sure you pray with your child as well. 5

How to Have a Quiet Time 1. Each day you should find a time that is best for you to spend with God. 2. Find a quiet place. Make sure the radio and TV are off. 3. Approach God with the highest respect. 4. Ask God to help you understand what you are reading. 5. Remember, God loves you and cares about your every need. 6. Do not do all the talking. Let God speak to your heart. 7. If God shows you something in His Word, Do it. 8. Write down your prayer requests and the date of your requests so you can see how God answers your prayers. 9. Journal: Because it is difficult to remember everything God does in our lives, it is good to keep a journal. Write down specific things that He does so you can look back during hard times and be encouraged. You can write out your prayers if you like and be able to express your desires and burdens in written form. Journaling also allows you to write down your fears, worries, and struggles. It gives you something more specific to pray about. It allows you to evaluate each day and know how to live better tomorrow. Your journal is also a place for notes. As you study, write down what you have learned in your journal. You can use the Prayer Journal at the back of this book beginning on page 80. 10.Pray on the armor of God each day. You have an enemy, and God has provided the armor for your protection. You put the armor on through prayer. It is simple. Just pray, Lord Jesus, I take the belt of truth. Thank You for Your Word, which is truth. I put on the breastplate of righteousness because I have been made righteous only by faith in You. I put on the sandals of peace. Empower me today to share with others the Gospel of peace. I take up the shield of faith. Help me by faith to obey You in everything. I put on the helmet of salvation. Help me to take every thought captive to obedience to You. I take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Bring to mind the promises of Your Word today and crush Satan s attempts to defeat me. Thank You for Your protection. In Jesus name I pray, Amen. It is that simple and very effective against the devil s attacks. Do not forget to pray on your armor every day! Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil s schemes. (Ephesians 6:10-11) Weekly Memory Verses Read through your memory verse for the week you are on every day that week. Start to memorize the verse a few words at a time. Each day add a few more words to what you already know. By the end of the week, you will have the memory verse down, and you will be able to quote it easily. Week One Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14) Week Two But what about you? he asked. Who do you say I am? Peter answered, You are the Christ. (Mark 8:29) Week Three God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Week Four Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. (Luke 5:15) Week Five When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority. (Matthew 7:28-29a) Week Six But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law. (Galatians 4:4) Week Seven For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45) Week Eight In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God s grace. (Ephesians 1:7) Week Nine Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies. (John 11:25) Week Ten I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. (Revelation 22:13) Week Eleven Every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:11) Week Twelve This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. (Acts 1:11b) Week Thirteen If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (Luke 9:23) Week Fourteen Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. (Mark 10:14b) Week Fifteen But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. (Matthew 9:6a) Week Sixteen The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. (Psalm 103:19) Week Seventeen Such a high priest meets our need one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. (Hebrews 7:26) Week Eighteen I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. (John 12:46) 6 Fall Session Character Traits Nehemiah Kids Grade 4 7

Week One Prophesied Prophets foretold the coming Messiah as revealed to them by God. Memory Verse Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14) Pray on the Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) Lord Jesus, I take the belt of truth. In Jesus name I pray, amen. DAY1 Read Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18 What did the prophet Isaiah say was going to happen? What happened in Matthew 1:18? Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, Isaiah told of His coming birth. Matthew later wrote how prophesy was fulfilled through the birth of Jesus Christ. God s Word can be trusted because He said it, then He did what He said He was going to do. He sent His Son, born of a virgin, and she named Him Immanuel. PRAY: Thank God today for sending His Son Jesus and for being faithful to His Word. Ask Him to guide you today as you live for Him. Write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal. WEEK ONE The Prophesied Messiah DAY2 Read Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:4-7 Where did Micah say that the birth of the Messiah would be? According to Matthew 2:4-7, where was Jesus born? God predicted the birth place of Jesus through the prophet Micah. God revealed the coming of His Son through the prophets so that we might believe in Him. God s Word is true and can be trusted. This should make you want to read the Bible more. When is the best time for you to read the Bible? PRAY: Tell God thank You for sending His Son and for fulfilling His promises. Give praise to the Lord Jesus for saving you from your sins. Write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal. DAY3 Read Hosea 11:1; Matthew 2:13-15 Many years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Hosea predicted that God s Son Jesus would leave Egypt and return to Israel. After Jesus was born, the Lord told His parents to flee to Egypt to protect Jesus from being killed by the evil King Herod. The passage in Matthew tells us what actually happened after Jesus was born. When Herod died, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus returned to Israel. God had a plan through His Son Jesus Christ. Through the prophets, God made His plan known so that we would know for certain that Jesus is His Son and that we would find salvation through Him. What the prophets said came true. There is no reason to doubt the truth of who Jesus is and why He came. PRAY: Thank the Lord for the prophets who foretold who Jesus is and how to find Him. Thank God for sending Jesus to die for you. Write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal. 8 Fall Session, Week One Nehemiah Kids Grade 4 9

DAY4 Read Isaiah 53:4-6; 1 Peter 2:24 Isaiah tells us why Jesus was coming to Earth. He foretold that Jesus was coming to take the punishment we deserve for our sins. Isaiah predicted that He would suffer in our place, and He would die in our place. He would do it because of our sin. He would do it because of His love for us. Isaiah predicted that Jesus would die a terrible death for sinners. Peter wrote about what actually happened. Jesus fulfilled Isaiah s prophesy when He died on the cross for our sins and took our punishment. Jesus paid the terrible punishment of sin for us. Prophecies about Jesus were written so that we might believe in the one and only way God provides for our salvation Jesus Christ. PRAY: Thank God for the gift of eternal life and for taking your place on the cross. Surrender your life to Him today. Write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal. DAY5 Read Psalm 16:9-10; Acts 2:31 The psalmist predicted that the Messiah s body would not stay dead in the tomb. He said it would not decompose or decay. He predicted the resurrection of Christ. Jesus died for our sins, but the grave could not keep Him there. He rose from the dead. Why is it important that Jesus overcame the grave, that He did not stay dead? The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ show us that we, too, can overcome death by believing in Him. As you go about your day today, think about what Jesus did on the cross and in the tomb for you. Be thankful for what that means for you as a believer. PRAY: Thank the Lord for His Word that tells you what Jesus did for you. Thank Jesus for dying for your sins and coming back to life. Write your prayer requests in your Prayer Journal. WEEK ONE The Prophesied Messiah DAY6 PARENT TALK: CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW Read John 14:1-6 with your child. In a world where it is hard to find anything trustworthy, we can trust God s inspired Word. Our world teaches that there are many ways to Heaven and many doors to get there. Different religions teach different paths to God. Some say that ALL paths lead to God. Some claim that the god they have made up themselves is the same God that we serve. Others say that their way is the right way. We know from the truth of God s Word that Jesus Christ is the only way to have eternal life in Heaven with God (v. 6). Through Scripture, God revealed His plan through Christ. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, prophets of God predicted His birth (Isaiah 7:14). They predicted the place of His birth (Micah 5:2), and they foretold of His death (Isaiah 53:4-6). The chance of one prophecy coming true is one in 16 billion. There are more than 300 prophesies in the Bible that were fulfilled in regards to Christ s birth, life, death, and resurrection. God had a plan, and that plan has been revealed in His Son Jesus Christ. During the next seventeen weeks, your child will be studying about the wonders of Jesus Christ and who He is. Discuss with your child the uniqueness of the Bible prophesies coming true in the life of Jesus Christ. Discuss how you can tell your friends and neighbors what the Bible says about who Christ is. Do not forget to tell them how they can come to know Him as Savior and Lord. Have your child quote this week s memory verse, then discuss the following questions with them: 1. What are some prophesies about Jesus that came true? 2. Why is it significant that there were prophesies about Jesus that were fulfilled? 3. What can you tell your friends about Jesus that would help them to believe in Him as the Son of God and as Lord and Savior of their lives? PRAY: Pray with your child, thanking God for the fulfillment of prophecy through Jesus Christ. Pray that your child would feel a strong desire to share Christ with their friends and neighbors. Have your N.K. write their prayer requests in their Prayer Journal. 10 Fall Session, Week One Nehemiah Kids Grade 4 11 Parent Initials Date
