2, SPLENDID! 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7 (NIV) When we are greeted by someone they often ask, How are you? What is your normal response? The usual seems to be the word, Fine. Maybe the questioner really wants to know my circumstances or my attitude but then again, it is often just a formality. My response lately has been the word, Splendid! It raises a few eyebrows. Maybe that sounds contrived, but with all things considered, life truly is splendid. I am a Christian. Because I have believed in Jesus Christ as my Savior, I am a forgiven sinner, redeemed from condemnation and death; I am reconciled with my Creator, God Almighty. I am counted as perfectly righteous and one of His most precious children. I have no reason to fear any danger or hardship or enemy because He is my protector. I am assured that He will abide with me now and forever. When the Apostle Paul wrote the above words that are so uplifting and confident, he was suffering as a chained prisoner in a squalid dungeon. Yet as he declares and encourages us, regardless of circumstances, we have much to rejoice about! As Christians we are invited to converse with God as we would a loving father. He wants us to share our thoughts and joys and challenges with Him. He prompts us to lay it all on the table with an honesty and sincerity that comes with total trust. He not only listens, but He will act

upon our requests. He may not answer in the way that we in our selfish/ finite desires might want, but it will be the best to bring about extended grace and love for us and to those around us as well. For instance, have you ever wondered why some Christians go through a prolonged illness? Why doesn t God bring physical healing? He certainly can, and many times He does. But I have also seen that through the trust and patience of the afflicted, trusting in our heavenly Father no matter what, there can be a profound effect on others in drawing them to Jesus. I went through cancer treatment some years ago. Certainly it was no picnic. When I was being prepped for my journey home after surgery, a male nurse practitioner needed to remove some drainage tubes from my abdomen. He asked the usual what do you do for a living, to which I responded I was a minister. He completed the bandaging and then he paused and said, If you don t mind, I have a question about why you believe in Jesus? He explained that he was never a part of a church and he didn t really understand why we respected Jesus so much, even when Christians get hit by personal disasters. Even though I was anxious to leave, we conversed for the next 20 minutes in that exam room, and I silently prayed, asking the Lord to help me explain the hope that only Jesus can give. Rejoice always? Even when having to deal with cancer? Even when suffering? Even facing our mortality? I have wondered about that man, and I have prayed, Lord, if you needed me to go through the ordeal of cancer treatment just so you could place me in that exam room with someone who needs to be saved by you, well, OK, it was worth it. It IS worth giving our lives over to Jesus and having a peace that passes understanding, because God can be trusted. He knows what s best, He does what is best, for us as believers and for those he desires to know His love. What is life like for you today? Splendid? I hope you have experienced the reality of joy in Christ! If you are a saved sinner like me, today may you sense the peace that He is with you, upholding you, loving you, and calling you to live out the joy of your salvation in front of others so that they, too, may receive Him. Wouldn t that be splendid! 3

Hello there, Mousey here. I am so happy to be back from a nice vacation, but there is a problem with all my relatives coming to visit. They seem to disappear every day, and there was a lot of them. What a month, with lots going on. Sunday School has started with the little people and the big people studying The Story. What a way to read the Bible. There is still time to come to the Bible Study. If you didn t get a book, there are still some here to get one. I can go to either class and find out what is going on. The next big thing that happened was when Mark Vander Tuig came to spend time with us. First he met with the councils of Lund and Shepard of the Lakes, to discuss making our churches stronger. Mark is the LCMC Service Coordinator. His job is to train and equip leaders for effective ministry, & expand the LCMC network. He hopes to plant 1000 new congregations in the next 10 years and strengthen the churches that already are here. Sounds like a big job to me. He also spent several hours here on Saturday, and talked about making disciples. He said it takes 1000 Lutherans one full year to bring 1 person to Christ. He also said that the churches need to make their mission work to focus on local needs, which the Mission Committee and the Ladies are doing. We were so blessed to have him here, sharing his message, Friday, Saturday and at both churches on Sunday. To God be the Glory! Love you all. Till next month, Mousey ******************************************************** 5 We are grateful to God that we were blessed to have Pastor Mark Vander Tuig with us the weekend of September 7th. Mark conducted a church council seminar Friday evening, a congregational workshop on Saturday and preached for us on Sunday. Pastor Vander Tuig is the lead representative for Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ LCMC. It is a great joy to know that pastors such as Mark who have a passion for drawing others to know Christ and serve our association so faithfully. To God Be The Glory!
