He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. 6 The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. 10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.

The Gospel Matthew 3:1-12 1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. 4 John s clothes were made of camel s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Special Congregational Meeting A special congregational meeting has been called by the church council for today following the 9:30 worship service. The members will vote on the following question. Shall the Immanuel congregation accept the church council s recommendation to: - demolish the Parish House after removing asbestos - remove the garage - make arrangements for gravel parking and green space for a cost not to exceed $40,000, with the majority of the funds coming from the Thora Kinseth Estate donation? Today will be our monthly Improvement Fund offering. Please place your Improvement Fund gift in the offering plate with your other offering. This fund is used for capital expenditures to maintain and improve our church buildings. Don t forget the coffee fellowship in the social hall following the worship service today. The Primary Children s Christmas Program will be held at the beginning of the worship service next Sunday, December 15. We will take the kids downstairs for a movie during the rest of the service and you can pick them up in their rooms following the church service. The Light has come!!! Join the Rotation Sunday School and Junior Choirs for a special service of music and celebration. The choirs will present their Christmas program, "The Light Has Come," next Sunday, December 15 at the 9:30 service. Parents of 2nd-6th Graders: The choirs will have another Saturday practice at 9:00 A.M. December 14. This program celebrates the birthday of Jesus and reminds us all that Jesus came to be the Light of the world. Our songs are fun and mix new tunes with old favorites. We even include the congregation in a hymn sing-a-long. Join us in praise and celebration!! Thanks to all those who helped decorate our church building for the coming Christmas season. Christmas Angel Gift Project. If you purchased a gift for the Angel Gift Project, you are reminded that gifts must be returned to the church by tomorrow, December 9. Congratulations to Christine Woolson who married Mark Walter last Sunday in Des Moines. Our Christian sympathy to the family of Milt Mussehl who died this past Thursday. His funeral service will be held at Immanuel tomorrow at 11 A.M. Visitation will take place this afternoon from 2-4 P.M. at Soderstrum funeral home. Christmas Eve Services. Everyone is invited to worship the newborn king at our traditional Christmas Eve Candlelight Family services at 4:30 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 24. The music and words of Christmas will fill our sanctuary. Because of the overflowing crowds the past few years, the church council decided to have two services again this year. They will be similar except that the 8:00 P.M. service will also have Holy Communion. Your talents are needed for these services. If you would like to have a part in one or both of these services by sharing a special vocal or instrumental selection or a reading, please call the church office or let Emily Anderson know by tomorrow, December 9. Attendance last Sunday: 261 Offering December 1 Current & Benevolence 5,966.00 Improvement Fund 120.00 Missionary Support Fund 475.00 Ministry Fund 105.00 Loaves & Fishes 635.00 Designated Emergency 10.00 Total 7,311.00 As you plan your December giving let s keep in mind the needs of our current fund. This fund is at a lower level than at the beginning of the year. Let s all work together to end the year with a healthy balance in this and our other church accounts.

If you are looking for a good Christmas gift this year, please consider one or more of the Immanuel Anniversary Cookbooks or CDs. They will be on sale at a reduced price in the narthex each Sunday through December 22. Thrivent Builds Funding. As we come toward the end of 2013, we begin to reflect on what we have and what we can do. One of the things we have begun in 2013 is the building of a Thrivent Builds House in Huxley. This is in partnership with Central Iowa Habitat for Humanity. Because of the help of many volunteers, the house has progressed very well and will be complete so the family can move in before Christmas. One of the steps to the building of this house is the Story County Chapter of Thrivent Financial commitment to raise $10,250 toward this house. The other major contributors are Thrivent Financial (the major portion of the funding) and the Central Iowa Habitat for Humanity. Please consider giving toward this Thrivent Builds House. If we all do our share, we can bring affordable housing to one more family in Story County. Please make your contributions to your church with a note that it is for Thrivent Builds. Please make your contribution before the end of the year. Thank You Riverside Worship Christmas Party. Riverside Bible Camp is having a Christmas party tonight! It will begin at 6 P.M. in the Dining Hall and will be done by 7:30 P.M. There will be hot cocoa, wagon rides around camp (dress warm), cookie decorating, a carol sing, Christmas crafts, and a bunch more! This event is totally free for you, your friends, and your family. So invite some folks along, or come alone, and join in for the Riverside Christmas Party! Upcoming Events Our Young Adults and Family Christmas Party will be today, starting at 4:00. We'll have a "white elephant" gift exchange for the adults and an ornament exchange for the kids. (It was so fun last year we decided to do it again!) Each adult brings a funny wrapped present you'd like to re-gift. Each child brings a wrapped, inexpensive ornament to exchange. We'll begin with a Christmas devotion and share a potluck supper after the gift exchange. See you in the social hall downstairs! Reminders Nursery facilities are available across from the restrooms on the main floor of the educational wing. Please feel free to take your child there if needed during the service. The Children's Activity Bulletins are available from the ushers for young children. Hearing devices for those who have a difficult time hearing the service can be found on the shelf in the narthex. Please ask an usher to assist you. Tune in to the Immanuel Lutheran Radio Broadcast each Sunday morning at 8 A.M. on KASI Radio (AM 1430).
