Psalm 130:1

Pastor s Column April 5 6, 2014 I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. How appropriate that our Gospel for this weekend following the wake, vigil Mass, funeral Mass and burial of our beloved Pastor Emeritus of St. Margaret Mary, Father Walter Mitchell, is St. John s account of our Lord raising Lazarus from the dead. The story begins with the sisters of Lazarus, Martha and Mary, sending word to Jesus saying, Master, the one you love is ill. Father Mitchell was a man greatly loved by so many people. And he was ill and in pain for many of these last years of his life. But until a fall in his apartment a couple of weeks ago which literally broke his neck incapacitated him, Father Mitchell never let his pain or infirmity interfere with his joy for life or his care and concern for others. I first met Father Mitchell not through the Priesthood or through the Church but rather through Gargiulo s, a favorite restaurant of his and of mine. Whenever I ate there I would always see Father Mitchell sitting at a table with a steady stream of people, clergy and laity alike, stopping by to greet him. When I finally asked one of the Russo brothers who own the restaurant what was going on, I was told, Oh, that s Father Walter Mitchell. He taught us Religion at Xaverian. He s crazy but we love him. And after I entered the seminary and began studying for the Priesthood, I, too, would make that pilgrimage to Father Walter s table to pay my respects and be greeted by his famous, Holy Mackerel! Father Mitchell was truly one of those classic characters for which the Diocese of Brooklyn is famous. He was also an accomplished Scripture scholar who during the season of Lent on late Monday evenings at Gargiulo s would preside over Scriptures and Scarole answering questions about the Bible and the Church while enjoying a meal with the restaurant s owners and staff. Having studied like myself in Rome, Father Mitchell was also a brilliant linguist who could converse in fluent Italian and Spanish and other languages as well. When a resident of Menorah Nursing Home tried to prevent Fr. Mitchell from giving her a blessing because she was Jewish, he replied, That s okay, my boss is Jewish, and he proceeded to pronounce a blessing over the woman in Hebrew. Most importantly, Walter Mitchell was a Pastor who, as Pope Francis has asked of his priests, smelled like his sheep because he was constantly going out among them, especially to those most in need. When Jesus saw how deeply troubled Martha and Mary were over the death of their brother and his friend Lazarus, Jesus also wept. Many of us at St. Mark and St. Margaret Mary who knew Father Mitchell have also shed a few tears because we will miss him. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
