September Newsletter 2016 Let Me Learn of Jesus Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com

From the Pastor s Desk: Turning Away from the Devil Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (1 Peter 5:8-9) The devil, though defeated by the death, resurrection, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, remains a very capable and clever foe. He is smarter than we are. He s been watching us and taking notes for a very long time. He knows what we want, and he knows how to lure us away. And he does this by telling us what we want to hear. That s what makes it so difficult. To us who are greedy, he says: You are not greedy. You are prudent. You are frugal. You are a good steward with your money. God doesn t want you not to have all the things you want. He wants you to be happy. He wants you to have the latest and greatest toys for both young and old. So if you consider yourself to be wise in the way of money and finances, beware of who just might be telling you these things. Satan is a liar. He tells us what we want to hear. He lures us away from repentance and confession and faith, so that we harden our consciences and place our souls in peril. We must not underestimate the enemy. We have all taken his bait. We have all failed in this. None of us can say that we have fought this temptation to hold back with everything we have and won. 2

And we must repent. Yes, God wants us to be happy. But this happiness is never at the expense of faithfulness. We have a calling. We are a member of His family, the church. That relationship places a duty upon us: to give a generous proportion of the first fruits of the income He provides. Only God is true to His Word. Only God is true to His promises. His promises never fail. His Word endures forever. His mercies are new every morning. He is faithful. He provides everything that we need. He provides food and clothes, house and home, everything that we pray for in the fourth petition of the Lord s Prayer. There are a whole host of things that we have that we do not need. The question that we need to ask ourselves is whether these have come at the expense of our faithful, generous proportion of the first fruits of our income. If they have, then we must repent, turning away from our selfishness to Him who is faithful by giving His Son into death so that we are reconciled to Him and justified in His sight. The devil will always tell you what you want to hear. But God tells us and gives us what we need to hear. With law and gospel, he cuts us to the heart, so that we will repent and believe His Word and promises. He is faithful. He is good. He will not forsake you, or leave you destitute. So believe and trust in Him. And you will not only be happy. You will be blessed. Prayer: Cast care aside; Upon thy Guide Lean, and His mercy will provide; Lean, and the trusting soul shall prove Christ is its Life and Christ its Love. Amen. 3

A Man Named Martin Part Two Thursday Bible Class Begins September 15 A Man Named Martin-Part Two: The Moment examines the errant teachings and wayward traditions of the Late Medieval Church that eventually sparked the Protestant Reformation, a theological overhaul set in motion most notably by Martin Luther's nailing of the 95 Theses to the church door at Wittenberg. As a follow-up Bible study to 2015's A Man Named Martin- Part One: The Man, this three-session Bible study takes a close look at the widespread teachings of the late Medieval Church that were superfluous to the Bible or not scripturally grounded. Among them were purgatory, penance, celibacy, prayers for the dead, transubstantiation, the treasury of merits of Christ, devotion to Mary and the rosary, the institution of the papacy, and the one most often linked to the Reformation: the sale of indulgences. Joining forces in examining these aberrant teachings and the role Martin Luther had in debating and, ultimately, rejecting them is a cast of scholars, professional church workers, and pastors. Here Dr. Paul Maier, Dr. Ken Schurb, Dr. John Nunes, Dr. Joel Lampe, Dr. Susan Mobley, Dr. Joel Biermann, and others, along with The Lutheran Hour Speaker and host Dr. Gregory Seltz, add insight and expertise to this fascinating period in the life of Martin Luther. Classes Begin Thursday, September 15 th in our church s fellowship hall. Classes will be at 10:00 AM and again at 7:00 PM. This class will continue where we left off with the early life of Martin Luther. If you did not come to the class last year you can come to this class and you will be able to 4

catch up on what you missed. Please come to this important study. Acolyte Schedule for September The acolyte Schedule for September will be established during the confirmation class. The Earth Shook On April 16 th, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck the east coast of Ecuador killing more than 650 people and injuring 16,600. Some 7,000 buildings were destroyed leaving 25,000 men, women and children living in tents. Orphan Grain Train is sending food and humanitarian aid for 3

the families devastated by the earthquake and has partnered with Kids Around the World (KAW) to work with their recipient in Ecuador. The shipment will enter through the port of Guayaquil and then be transported to the town of Puertoviejo, which will be the distribution hub for relief supplies to all of the surrounding communities hardest hit by the earthquake. Orphan Grain Train shipped 7,700 lbs of edible dry beans, 28,512 Kids Against Hunger meals and 149,688 Mercy Meals, blankets, quilts, clothing, shoes, 100 water filters for purifying drinking water, and hygiene kits on May 17, 2016. Thank you for your support and prayers for this and all the shipments, international or domestic, to help others in desperate living conditions.
