First United Methodist Church Red Oak, Texas The Acorn A Small Package of Large Possibilities Issue 2009-5 February 3, 2009 The month of Love is here, by the way where did January go! Valentines is on February 14 th, the day we celebrate the love we have with spouses, but shouldn t we be doing that every day. When I do a marriage ceremony I remind the couple of the warm fuzzy love they have at that time as they stare into each other s eyes. It is that love that will be celebrated on Valentines. But there is so much more to love than the warm fuzzy. Love is a verb that means it is something that we do, not just feel. We find the definition of love in 1 Corinthian 13. This idea of love is hard to live up to but what is required of Christians. Celebrate with the love of your life, but remember there is more to love than the feeling. As we start the month of February it is necessary to inform you of our financial obligations. This month we will be having a dinner on the 21 st to raise money for our connectional giving. At this point we have not made any payments towards this obligation. We also have electricity, water, trash pickup, insurance, office supplies, and program expenses to meet each month. I understand that many of us are going through tough times with the economy, but we need to stay faithful to the commitment we made to our church. See you Sunday, Pastor Doug Coming Soon: CAJIN CELEBRATION!!!! & Mardi Gras Party at FUMC - February 21 st. More information coming soon. ATTENTION: NEW PROCEDURE ON NEWSLETTERS COMING First UMC is implementing a new procedure starting in March for our newsletters to cut the cost of paper and postage. Over the next couple of weeks those receiving newsletters by mail will continue to receive them, but starting with the newsletter that goes out on March 3, 2009 there will be a change. Those receiving newsletters by email will continue to receive their newsletter on a weekly basis. Those now receiving a newsletter by US mail will receive only one newsletter a month. This newsletter will contain the monthly prayer list and church calendar. Printed newsletters will be available in hard copy to pick up at the church in the foyer. If you are not on the email list at this time, please send an email to our church Office Manager, Lori Stricker at strickerlori@yahoo.com. If you want to be taken off the mailing list all together you can call the church office at 972-617-9100. Please note if you are responsible for advertising your committee s activities, you will need to get those items to the church office prior to the last week of the month in order to get the word out to the most recipients possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

Confirmation Classes Starting Wednesday, February 18 th and conclude on Pentecost Sunday, May 31 st. The class will meet on Wednesdays at 5 pm. and conclude at 6:30 after dinner. While the team we were cheering for may not have won, we all still had a great time at the game party on Sunday! This next Sunday we are having Sweetheart night. Don t worry if you don t have your own sweetheart we will be talking about our ultimate Sweetheart, the Almighty! See you Sunday! Mara MISSION TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT: This summer's mission trip will be in Anadarko, Oklahoma from June 21st-27th. Please put the dates on your calendars now and stay tuned for more information! ONE GOD, ONE FAITH, ONE WAY Dear Church FAMILY & FRIENDS, We want to say a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to each of you for your prayers and for opening up your hearts to us in this tragic time. Our home was a gift from Scott's Grandparents (that passed away in Dec 07 and Oct 08) and we are so heartbroken over it but with all the love and support you all have shown us we know we will make it through this event in our life. It is funny we were thinking of fixing up the house and selling it to move up to north Texas area where Scott works (Plano), so he would not have to drive so far everyday. But when we found ourselves wrapped in this blanket of LOVE we just can not even think of MOVING! We are currently looking at plans to rebuild our home with the help of Tadd Anderson and his father's building company. We are living in a smaller house that is on the same property as the "BIG" house. We are comfortable here and lived here before we moved in to help out more with the Grandparents. We wanted to update our FAMILY & FRIENDS on our situation so you know that we are doing well and thank you all for your help and love. Just listening to Pastor Doug these passed few weeks, I have come to believe you all have shown the world how to love and get the word out of how our faith is strong and God loves us and will help us through our storms of life. Scott & Tamela Sackett, Jonathan & Matthew
