From the Pastor s Desk June 24, 2018 4 Nativity of St. John the Baptist We celebrate the feast of John the Baptist's birth (June 24), in place of the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time because of John s prominent role in the history of salvation as the forerunner of the Messiah. We celebrate this feast on a Sunday only once every seven years. It is a very important feast, one of only three birthdays that the Church celebrates. The other two are Our Savior's and Our Blessed Mother's. St. John the Baptist is the last of the Old Testament prophets. The archangel Gabriel informed the childless Zechariah, the priest that a son whom he was to name John, would be born to him and his barren, aged wife. Luke s Gospel describes how Zechariah got the Divine message in the Holy of Holies in the Temple of Jerusalem while he was offering incense. The first reading (Is 49:1-6) expresses important aspects of John s career. God had called him from his mother's womb to be a prophet to His people and a light to the nations. He was the one who prepared Israel to receive their long-awaited Messiah by preaching repentance. The second reading describes the mission of John the Baptist. In all humility, he publicly acknowledged his role: he was merely the Messiah s herald. He pointed people to Christ. Today s Gospel (Lk1:57-66, 80) describes the birth of John the Baptist and his naming ceremony on the eighth day. In the presence of friends and relatives, Zechariah miraculously regains his speech after writing, John is his name. (The name John means God is gracious ). The first words he uttered were those of praise, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and brought redemption to his people..."(lk1:68) John was faithful to the role God had destined for him in the plan of salvation: He lived up to this role extremely well. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, He goes before the Lord in the Spirit and power of Elijah (CCC 696). Jesus Himself said: "Amen, I tell you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist." (Mt 11:11) "Yet," Jesus continues, "the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." John showed us that being faithful to God's will should always be more important than our personal desires or satisfactions. Our Lord invites each of us to imitate John the Baptist's life of simplicity, humility and obedience to God's will. John s guiding principle in life was "He (Jesus) must increase, I must decrease"(jn 3:30). Our lives will have meaning only when we give honor and glory to God mainly by doing His will as He designed specifically for each of us. Diocese of Brooklyn will have five new priests Next Saturday, June 30th 2018, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will ordain five new priests for service in the Diocese of Brooklyn. I ask you to pray for them as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Let us also pray that more young people will discern their special call and say yes to God's call for vocations to the Priesthood and the Religious Life. Parish Picnic I hope to see you today, June 24th, from 2-6 PM in Cunningham Park. Let us celebrate our parish diversity! God bless you! Fr. John Francis
