A Newsletter for members of Trinity Lutheran Church to promote communication of information in the congregation. From the Pastor March 2019 Dear Members and Friends of Trinity, We begin the Season of Lent on March 6. For many of us growing up in the Lutheran Church, this meant what I would call forty days of penance that carried the Biblical focus of the passion of Christ. We were urged to identify with his sufferings or to show our penitence by giving up something for Lent (such as chocolate or television). However, there has been a change over the years as to how we view Lent as it leads up to Holy Week and Easter. We now look at it more as a time of preparation for baptism(s) as well as preparation for an annual renewal of our baptismal covenant for those of us already baptized. This is the direction that we take here at Trinity as we look forward to our celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on April 21. We begin our Lenten discipline on Ash Wednesday, March 6, with worship at 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM. This service s ritual use of the imposition of ashes reminds us of two central truths: we are mortal human beings ( Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return ) and we are given the ashes in the sign of the cross of Christ on our forehead reminding us of the promise of eternal life. The worship services every week during Lent will show restraint in all things as we look to the joy of our Easter celebration. The color of fabric is purple, in remembrance of the royalty of Christ, how reigns from the cross. On the five Sundays of Lent I will lead a time of reflection and discussion on the Five Gifts of Discipleship as they relate to the renewal of our baptismal covenant. Join us between Sunday worship services (9:15-10:15) in the sanctuary as we focus on the book of Philippians. Also, we will worship together on the Wednesdays during Lent at 11:00 AM in the church using again the Taize style of worship. This quiet and contemplative worship is characterized by the singing of the music of the Taize community, prayer, silence, Scripture reading and reflection. Finally, you will be encouraged to give alms as another Lenten discipline that we are calling 40 Days of Giving. To assist you, we will have available for your use a 40-day Lenten devotional calendar as well as coin jar wrappers for you to join us in the practice of giving of our financial resources to end hunger and poverty. It is my sincere hope that you will join us in all that is planned for our Lent, Holy Week and the Easter celebration. This is a time for renewed dedication to the abundant life that God gives us through the life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Peace, Pastor Prehn

2019 Lenten Mission Trinity will journey with the ELCA World Hunger this Lent as we join together to study, reflect and give during the 40 Days of Giving. You are invited to join us in reflective weekly study. Practicing Lenten disciplines of repentance, prayer and fasting, giving and works of Love. As you journey through Lent, practice sacrificial giving by supporting the work of the ELCA World Hunger beyond your typical offerings. 736 million people live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 per day. That is 10.7 % of the world s population. With a gift of $2.00 a day for the 40 days of Lent you can make a significant impact on hunger and poverty to our neighbors in our world. May God bless your journey through the Lenten season. Cantor s Notes We believe that the holy act of singing together shapes faith, heals brokenness, transforms lives, and renews peace. The guiding stance of The Center for Congregational Song of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. + The Lutheran cantor is the leader of the people s song, and the above statement has been very affirming and comforting for me in recent months. This month we look at the third item. Renews peace At its best, singing together enables unity when perhaps spoken conversation is difficult or impossible. At its best, our song reminds us and inspires us to be better versions of ourselves. We seek conversation partners who have strong, thoughtful convictions, and who approach their work with humility and collegiality. + Thanks to all who attended this year s hymn festival: Epiphanies: Sing of God Made Manifest. It was an inspiring afternoon of singing together! Thanks to all the musicians who participated. Thanks to Pastor Weinrich and Pastor Prehn. Thanks to all who gave offerings and/or food for Gifts of Love and Halifax Urban Ministries. Thanks to the fellowship committee for the delicious bread and soup supper that followed the hymn festival. + Our old set of handbells has been purchased by Coronado Community United Methodist Church right here in New Smyrna Beach. They are excited to be able to start a bell choir! + The ELCA is sponsoring a God s work. Our hands. hymn-writing contest. The chosen hymn will become a year-round worship resource and should reflect on service as an opportunity for us to explore on of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: All of life in Jesus Christ every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life is in response to our gratitude for God s abundant grace. Please see me for more information. The winning entrant will receive a $500 honorarium. + A Cappella Sunday is when churches across the country commit to singing a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment) in their worship service. It happens each year on the First Sunday in Lent (March 10, 2019) and is supported by the Hymn Society and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. We already do this often at Trinity, so be ready! + GODSPELL will be performed March 21-30 in the Root Auditorium at the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences by the Positively Florida Theater Company. There are seven performances, so please look for info at positivelyfloridatc.com or see the poster on the bulletin board at church. Godspell is a musical love story from the Gospel of Matthew. + Welcome visitors! You are invited to join the Trinity choir while you are living in the area, even if only for a short time. Please let me know of your interest and I ll have music ready for you at our next rehearsal. Cantate Domino! (Sing to the Lord!) Brian Larson

We will be highlighting a section each month. This month we are highlighting DEVOTIONS. There are 36 books for personal and group devotions. Max Lucado, our featured author of the month, is a minister at the Oak Hill Church in San Antonio, Texas. Two books, written by Max, that can be used for personal devotions are In the Eye of the Storm and When God Whispers Your Name. Two books suggested for group devotions include Safe in the Shepherd s Arms and Six Hours One Friday. Library hours are: Saturday 4PM to 6:30 PM Sunday 7AM to Noon Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9 AM to 4 PM I Peter2:9 You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Everyone is encouraged to take home their bulletins, so they can be used for: 1. Personal prayers during the week. 2. An outreach tool when you hand it to someone say, There is a prayer in here for you 3. A shut-in you plan to visit, either in person or by phone, to pray with them. This is a tool to use all week long, Not just as a guide for the worship service. It is fervently hoped that you find it uplifting to share the GOOD NEWS!
