Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time August 26, 2018 OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY Italian National Parish 1668 State Street San Diego, CA 92101 (619) 234-4820 Our Clerics Regular of St. Paul (Barnabite) priests welcome you to celebrate Mass with an open heart and eager desire for our Lord. Message From Our Pastors Father Joseph, Father Louis and Father Albino Each and every day we are bound to make a decision or a choice. From the time we get up in the morning and do our daily routine, until we go to sleep again at night, during the whole day we make several choices and decisions. Some of our choices will lead us to glorify God, some will unfortunately not. This Sunday we are reminded that when we make choices and decisions, it is the best choice that will lead us into the eternal life. And the best choice is to serve God in our daily life, like Joshua and his communities in our first reading today. MASS TIMES Daily (Monday - Saturday) 7:30 am, 12:00 pm Saturday Vigil 5:30 pm Sunday 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 12:00 pm Holy Days of Obligation 7:30 am, 12:00 pm, 7:00 pm 1st Sunday Italian Mass 12:00 pm Our Lady of the Rosary Mission Statement We, the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary, are a pilgrim church. Under the mantle of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we grow as a people of God following Jesus, celebrating the Eucharist, living apostolic service, continuing faith formation and Marian devotions. We strive to bring the joy of the gospel and imitate Jesus through compassion, mercy and love, especially for the poor and marginalized. We seek to be faithful stewards providing a heart and home for all. 2nd Sunday Gregorian Chant Latin Mass 4:00 pm Please dress appropriately for Church. Modesty is one of the Twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Our Lady of the Rosary asks you to consider the good of our souls as you prepare to visit the house of the Lord. To be modest and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for ourselves and for others. Please do not wear low cut tops or short shorts. Roger Lechner Ask A Catholic What s the Catholic position on the existence of extra-terrestrial life? In his novel Perelandra C. S. Lewis speculated about the possibility of a fallen race (such as ours) influencing unfallen extraterrestrials. We were affected by the fallen angel Satan. There s nothing in the Bible to say humanity couldn t have a similar effect on another race. On the other hand, we might also play a part in the redemption of another race--a role in their salvation history. The good angels played an important part in ours (Mt 28:2-5; Acts 7:38, 53). It s possible God has set up multiple worlds, some fallen, some not, but there s not the slightest scientific evidence he has. A few scientists, pandering to the tabloids, claim extra-terrestrials must exist, based on the mathematical likelihood of other stars having planets, but their theories are scoffed at by nearly the entire scientific community. The argument runs like this: If some of those planets have atmospheres like Earth s, and if some of those Earth-like planets spontaneously generate amino acids, and if some of those amino acids result in higher life-forms, then intelligent life exists on other worlds. You ll note a lot of ifs there. To insist there must be intelligent life elsewhere in the universe is to overstate the case. It s also theologically irrelevant because the central tenets of Christianity remain intact with or without little green men. For those with faith, no evidence is necessary; for those without it, no evidence will suffice. St. Thomas Aquinas The above Q&A is published by Catholic Answers www.catholic.com

Father Joe Invites you to join him in a 7 part Series: Justification by Grace through Faith and Works Article 7: Bible Verses That Seem to Indicate Justification by Faith Without Works By Nate Guyear 3 Jn 5:24 and 3:16 Whoever hears my words and believes will not be condemned. (Again, does not dismiss works. The word believes means a working faith. A nonworking faith is called sloth. Also, believes is present tense, meaning we must always believe. It is not a one-time act. Jn 15:14 says, If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Belief and love are not empty words. The works are necessary to show love and belief.) Jn 3:16 For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not parish but have everlasting life. (This verse is often taken out of context to say that all we need to do is believe in Christ. Other verses in the same chapter tell us there is more to it. Jn 3:3-8 - Jesus said, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus replied, how can a man be born when he is old? Jesus responded, unless one is born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Jn 3:19-21 For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does what is true comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God. Jn 3:36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him. In addition to Jn 3:16, there s an entire Bible.) Eph 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, not because of works. (Read Eph 2:10 We are created in Christ for good works. In other words, do the good works. We are truly saved by faith, but a departure from the works condemns us unless we return to God through repentance and confession. Vain works do not save. Read verses 1 through 7 for context.) Rom 8:35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? (Nothing can separate us. Christ loves us no matter what. However, to set our minds on the flesh is death (Rom 8:6). In other words, we must set our minds on Christ in order to have life. If we set our minds on Christ, we must obey him faith plus obedience.) Dear Friends and Parishioners: Through August 26, 2018 our Parish, lead by our Stewardship Team, is helping our friends and neighbors at Fr. The Order of the Clerics Regular of St. Paul (Barnabite Fathers and Brothers) is a religious family of priests and brothers who live in a community embracing the three evangelical counsels of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience. We follow the spirituality of St Paul the Apostle in his love to Jesus the Crucified and the Eucharist in doing our mission in the church. If you feel you have that vocation/calling to serve the Lord in this lifestyle, you may join us in our Religious Family and we will work together for the greater glory of God the author of our Vocation. The Philippines are the only Catholic nation in the continent of Asia, that has been Christianized by the Spanish since the arrival of Magellan in 1521. The Christian faith of the Filipino people is vibrant, permeating their whole lives. For most families it is great honor and desire to have one of their children become a priest or a nun. Unfortunately, the great majority of the people are still living in poverty; therefore, many families are not able to sustain the high cost of education toward the priesthood. This is why there are parents who are hesitant to let their children enter the seminary; even if the child manifests the desire to become a priest or a religious. Thus we have to rely heavily on contributions from generous benefactors, locally and abroad. Aware of your special concern for the promotion of vocations, especially for the widespread of evangelization, the Barnabite Fathers are confident that you will come to our aid with your spiritual and financial support. Since the seminary administration is able to provide only half of the foreseen expenses, we are asking generous and concerned Catholics like you to help us cover the other half. One of our Filipino priests, Fr. Richard M. Gentiano, will be in our parish to make an appeal to your generosity. We pray that you will be greatly charitable in responding to his appeal. May God reward you with many graces for your cooperation in building the Kingdom of God on earth. God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor 9:7 Connect and Follow Us facebook.com/olrsd @olrlittleitaly @OLRLittleItaly Thank you, The Barnabite Community in the Philippines
