Coaching Time Every spring the ball fields produce the blossom of new players coming to practice and compete. I can vividly recall when my seven-year-old Alex launched her softball career. As twilight descended on Montgomery, we traveled to the ball fields adjacent to Cloverdale Jr. High. The little ladies assembled on Field #3, and Coach Folmar began the instructing process. The girls lined up behind second base and began to field grounders. Some successfully snagged the ball and shot it over to first base. Most missed! And most could not throw all the way to first. So, the coaches would lob encouragement, Keep your eye on the ball! Keep your head down. Don t be afraid of the ball. Stay with it! Hustle. Throw with your body, not just your arm. Follow through with your wrist, girls! Those sweet memories of spring softball practice awaken my pastoral coaching responsibilities. God has called me to coach our beloved congregational team. Our goal is not to win a league title but to win this world! The basic skills package that is required to be God s winner includes: 1. Bible reading, study, and memorization 2. Prayer that keeps you constantly connected to the Lord 3. Worship as a lifestyle CONNEC IONS from your Pastor s Heart 4. Journaling to capture the instructions God gives you 5. Giving of your time, talents and treasure to serve Christ 6. Consistently communicating our faith as a witness 7. Discover, develop and deploy your gifts to serve 8. Accountability to other Believers Regardless of your skill level, don t be satisfied with your current proficiencies. Relentlessly pursue growth. Paul did. Receive his coaching: Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:13-14) So keep your eyes on God s prize and keep growing!
