They have four children and both work in educational administration positions here in the Diocese. We are very blessed to have her with us in the school. She brings warmth, energy, experience and a deep faith. I am very much looking forward to an exciting year with her and the teaching staff in our great school. If you are considering a tour of St. Bernard School, please do not hesitate to contact the school office for a visit and tour. This week is the Holy Day of the Assumption of Mary. Our parish will be offering a vigil Mass on August 14 at 5:30 pm in the main church. We will then be offering an 8:45 am and 5:30 pm on the Holy Day itself, August 15. Be sure to also check neighboring parishes if our times do not fit your work schedule. The Holy Day of the Assumption of Mary honors the assumption of Mary in both her body and soul into the fullness of eternal life. When you and I die, our souls come before God but our bodies remain in the earth until the final resurrection. We are not fully complete in the life to come until we are fully united with our resurrected body forever. Mary has followed where Christ has gone and to where we hope to follow also. I hope you can join us this week for this Marian feast. Next week is the Feast Day of St. Bernard on August 20th and thus this is our parish feast day. That s a big deal. August 20 th marks the day of his death or as the Church thinks of it, his entrance into heaven. He was from France in the 12 th Century. He was born of noble parents and was very well-educated. He renounced the posh life and embraced the life of an austere monk in the Cistercian community. He soon became known for his faith, wisdom, simplicity, learning and integrity. He was thus tapped to found many monasteries and to further the reform of the Church. Many popes relied on his counsel and advice. He refused multiple opportunities to be named a Bishop. He was known in a special way for his love of Mary and for the writing of some of our most famous Marian prayers like the Hail Holy Queen. His spiritual writings are stellar in their guidance to souls on the path to Heaven. He also preached for the 2 nd Crusade seeking to inspire the populace going forth to liberate the Holy Land. The Crusade was not successful however. St. Bernard is a Doctor of the Church, this is the highest title we can give our saints. This title means that his whole life can teach us how to follow Christ faithfully. So feel free to order an extra ice cream Sundae that day and perhaps steal away some time for an extra moment of prayer. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
