Will You Remain Faithful to the End? In the Muslim world, this is the kind of question a new Christian is asked before he is baptized. I know this because, on a recent trip to the Middle East, Dad gave me the opportunity to baptize a Christian believer from a Muslim background. I was prepared for a quick baptism until the leaders of the local church informed me that this was not the way it was done on their side of the world. No, baptisms in their church are preceded by an interrogation. That day, before I baptized Kamal, the men in the church asked him if he believed that Christ was the only way; if he believed in the authority of Scripture; if he was willing to give his life because of his faith in Christ. Kamal shared with us that he had once wanted to be a martyr for Allah. But now he stood before us sharing his desire to serve Christ alone; his commitment to remain faithful to the end; his willingness to give his life. My experience baptizing Kamal convicted me of the casual way we often approach our faith here in the West how those of us with the most freedom to share our faith exercise it the least, while those with the least freedom to share it seem to be exercising it the most. I left our trip reminded of the eternal value of what we do here at Leading The Way. From the casual Christian to the one who is daily risking his life to follow Christ, we are reaching real people who need to hear the uncompromising Truth of Christ so that they, too, can remain faithful to the end. As we close this fiscal year and begin a new one, I am more convinced than ever that what the world needs is a clear presentation of the Gospel. Thank you for the ways you have allowed us to do this through your generous prayers and giving. I hope this month s journal, We Preach Christ, encourages you the way God challenged me to shape our lives around Christ, rather than trying to make Him fit into ours. At the time, I saw how Christ was becoming a means to an end in many evangelical churches. I saw how the truths of God s Word were being adjusted to fit the culture. I felt God calling our church back to the basics, reminding us that the Gospel will always be a relevant message. Now, decades later, We Preach Christ is still the foundation of our ministry. It is our unchanging mission, a message from which we will never waver. Because this message is so dear to us, I want to personally invite you to tune in to our We Preach Christ Special airing this month on radio, television, and our website (see page 19-20 for more details). I know this message has already impacted many of you because of the volume of calls and emails we receive every time we air it so I hope you will join me and my sons as we share the heart behind the message. This month, I know you will be blessed as we highlight what I believe is the most important message of our generation. As you read this month s journal, I pray God would open your eyes to see where He is calling you to share Christ. I pray that He would use you to show the world that there is no doubt about it Jesus is the only way! Thank you for your faithful support as we continue to preach the uncompromising Truth of Christ. We could not do it without you. In Christ, Michael Youssef, Ph.D.

FEATURE What does it take to live a godly life in an ungodly world? The signatures of sin and evil are all around us. There has to be something more that we can do than just white-knuckle our way through temptation. my journal 2

Simply put, our anchor is Jesus Christ. He is our only salvation from sin the anchor of our souls that holds firm (see Hebrews 6:19), especially when the storms of life threaten and the enemy s temptations blow hard against us. Does this mean that we can escape the troubles of this world? No but it does mean that we set the compass of our hearts on Christ. Then, when the aggressive winds and tumbling waves live free of Satan s temptations, tactics, lies, and snares. We can begin living the godly life Christ has given us when we: Have a heart focused and set on Christ. We do this by being committed to prayer and the study of God s Word. We can t set our hearts on Christ or learn to live godly lives unless we follow the instruction manual that God has given to us, and this is His Word the Bible. We are involved in a spiritual battle. Unseen forces wage war against us, but the ultimate victory is won in Christ. of temptation come, we will not be overwhelmed by them. Jesus knew that we would face serious temptations and trials. The night of His arrest, He prayed for us: [Father], my prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it ( John 17:15-16). Living a godly life in an ungodly world is realizing that we do not belong to ourselves. As believers, we belong to Jesus Christ. He is the Shepherd of our souls, our loving Savior, and eternal Lord and from a spiritual standpoint, we do not belong to this world. Our heavenly Father has provided all that we need to Refuse to get caught up in busy work, believing that we are pleasing to God. The greatest gift you can give the Lord is not a full schedule that includes one church meeting after another. Immorality can steal and rob us of a beautiful relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, but busyness will prevent us from getting to know God in a personal way. We should not allow anything we are doing for God to prevent us from being with God. Realize that God loves us with an unconditional love. When we draw nearer and nearer to Christ, our desire to follow the way of temptation will fade. No one will ever care as much for us as june 2014 3

FEATURE the Savior does. Christ died so that we might have eternal life. His grace is a gift that cannot be purchased through good works or outstanding behavior. He loved us even before we were born, and He loves us now. We cannot earn His love, and we cannot lose it. When we yield to sin and sense that there is a distance between the Lord and us, it is not because His love for us has faded. There are consequences to sin that are unavoidable, and one of these is that we sense God s rebuke because we have grieved His Spirit. But when we pray and ask Him to forgive us, He does and He restores our fellowship with Him because His love has the ability to cover a multitude of sins (see James 5:20). Invest in our spiritual future. We are involved in a spiritual battle. Unseen forces wage war against us, but the ultimate victory is won in Christ. Only faith in Jesus Christ wins the battle. It is faith that is built and maintained through love and devotion to God s Son. If you are struggling to follow God s leadership in your life, stop. Ask Him to help you understand the depth of His love for you. When you do, you will find that God is giving you the strength you need to live a godly life in an ungodly world! my journal 4

My Journal We Preach Christ Christ is the central figure in all of history. He is the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and the Omega, the full revelation of the Creator God. From Genesis to Revelation, He is the fulfillment of all things. He is our only source of eternal life and the satisfier of our souls. Yet why are so many offended by Christ? Why is the Truth so unpopular? Following Christ is the antithesis to our me-centered culture. Following Him means we do not accept all of the above for an answer because only Jesus shed His blood on the Cross. This month s journal, We Preach Christ, confronts what Paul refers to in 2 Corinthians as the god of this age. This spirit seeks to undermine the authority of Christ by distorting the Truth, twisting it subtly until soon it does not resemble Truth at all. So how do we respond when we detect deception? Subtle distortions of the Truth, when left undealt with, will always grow into severe deceptions. But God wants to equip believers to recognize these deceptions, to distinguish Truth from lies, and to live in the light of Christ. This month s devotionals address the different worldviews permeating our culture today, offering the ultimate encouragement to us as we stand for Christ: that even if we are standing alone, we have a Helper who will lead us into all Truth. k1 W e P r e a c h C h r i s t J o u r n a l w e e The Only Savior Since the foundation of the Church, God s Truth has been under attack. Many have sought to modify the message of Christ and water down the Gospel to appeal to the masses. Jesus Himself faced religious leaders who believed their good works would earn them favor with God. The apostle Paul rebutted the heretics of his day as well, who taught that Christ wasn t sufficient for salvation. The Judaizers claimed that Jewish rituals and traditions were required for salvation, while the Gnostics taught that higher knowledge was salvation s key. The same attack against God s Truth continues today. Many of these lies are disguised in modern dress, but they are proclaiming old heresies even in many evangelical churches. Yet despite how these lies are dressed, they all have one common source. And God is calling us as His Church to stand against them. Read 2 Corinthians 4:4-5. In this passage, Paul tells us that there is a very active god of this age [who] has blinded the minds of unbelievers. This god, this spirit of the age, sneakily permeates our culture and even our church with its lies and deceptions. This spirit s intention is simple: to blind people s spiritual eyes to Christ because if they cannot see Christ, they will miss the only way to salvation. This is a crucial battle. And it is one that we as a church must fight. God has a strategy that we are to take up to combat this spirit of the age. In 2 Corinthians 4:4-5, Paul shares what it is: What we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. Just as God has called people from every generation through 2,000 years of church history, God has called us to stand against the spirit of the age by preaching Jesus Christ as Lord. He calls us to stand up against the spirit that is seeking to modify the message of Christ and say with the Apostle Paul, We do not preach ourselves; we preach Christ. We must preach Christ, who loves us so much He chose to die a criminal s death on the Cross in order to pay for our sin and to set us free. Christ s my journal 6 For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord. 2 Corinthians 4:5

payment for our sin is the only salvation. We must preach Christ, who healed the sick, raised the dead, made the lame to walk, and set the captives free. There is no higher knowledge that can help us connect with God we come to God through Christ and Christ alone. Despite how they are dressed, these heresies proclaimed around us every day are still lies. As believers, it is crucial for us to know the Truth, to be firmly grounded in it, and to stand for Christ in a world of compromise. These Truths are immovable, immutable, and unchangeable. And we are to build our lives on them. Begin asking God to help you recognize when you encounter heresies that the god of this age has spread. Ask Him for courage to be lovingly uncompromising with the people you encounter who have been blinded. God loves every person in the world, but He will not bend His Truth to make people more comfortable in their sin. No, He wants to rescue them from their sin! Ask God to impress His Truth in your heart and to help you to lovingly proclaim it, so we can stand with Paul and others throughout history and say, We preach Christ! MY J O U R N A L june 2014 7

2 W e P r e a c h C h r i s t J o u r n a l w e e k The Holiness Gap With God s help, we can join Paul and combat the god of the age that he warns us about in 2 Corinthians 4:4. The god of this age conceals itself with various disguises, but there are two common worldviews that present themselves in our culture. Self-improvement movements like Unitarianism teach that Christ is the ideal, perfect man which we can also be if we obtain a higher self. Knowledge-seeking movements like Scientology teach that if we know enough, we can survive forever. Both philosophies promote the same lie about salvation: that it is based on higher knowledge and learning or that there is something we can do to bring us closer to God rather than trusting solely in Christ s forgiveness. Like most lies, these philosophies are based on twisted Truth. The Truth is that there is a large gulf between man and God that only Christ can bridge. But we stand in need of absolute and total rescue not better thinking. Thankfully, God loves us too much to leave the gulf between us. Read Ephesians 1:3-8. Paul teaches that before the world even began, God loved us and chose to redeem us or buy us back through Jesus blood. In him we have redemption through [Jesus ] blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God s grace that he lavished on us (Ephesians 1:7-8). God chose to bridge the gap between our sinfulness and His holiness by spilling Jesus blood in payment for our sins. Because Christ paid the price for our forgiveness, God can declare us holy and blameless in his sight if we choose to turn from our sin and run to Him (Ephesians 1:4). Jesus mended the holiness gap. No higher learning or knowledge is needed. Holiness can only be given by One who is holy. It has to be imparted it cannot be earned. Since we are not holy, the only way we can ever become holy is for a holy God to reach down and bring us up to His level, imparting His holiness to us. This is exactly what God did in Jesus. This gap-mending God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. my journal 8 2 Corinthians 5:21

offering of forgiveness is a free, undeserved gift, but it must be accepted. And there is no other way to accept it than through Jesus. To an aching world who, on some level, senses its distance from God, we must preach Christ and Christ alone He is the only one who can forgive us of our sins. To the self-improvers and knowledge-seekers, God says: I made you, and I love you. Yes there is something that stands between us, and it is sin. But you cannot rid yourself of sin through higher knowledge. You cannot rid yourself of sin by trying to be the best person you can be. This is why I sent My Son so that you could stand holy and blameless before Me and have fellowship with Me, a holy God. When you encounter people who practice these philosophies, listen for the way they are attempting to bridge the gap they feel between themselves and God. Those are the chains of the spirit of the age. Then, as the Holy Spirit guides you and gives you words, explain God s heart to them. Explain that the gulf has already been mended. Christ did it all and all they must do is turn to Him. MY J O U R N A L june 2014 9

k3 W e P r e a c h C h r i s t J o u r n a l w e e The Truth About Sin The spirit of the age that Paul warns us about also comes dressed in the form of moral tolerance. Today, this spirit declares that Jesus is ambiguous about sin, and so must we be. This movement proclaims that Christ does not care how people behave morally. It declares that Christ is apathetic toward our decisions and lifestyles but God loves us too much to let us live a life of sin. Read Romans 6:23. Paul tells us that sin has a price, and that price is death. Any sin we commit ushers decay into our lives. Sexual immorality kills intimacy. Lying damages integrity. Gossip destroys relationships. Every sin brings something corrupt and evil into our lives. When Moses was telling the Israelites about God s laws, he made this principle very clear to them: This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life (Deuteronomy 30:19-20). Obedience and disobedience are matters of life and death, and God loves us too much to be passive about our own destruction. He wants us to follow His ways, the only path to fullness of life. The spirit of the age wants to keep people from experiencing life to the full (John 10:10), but more than that, it wants to keep us from the God who is Life. Sin doesn t only cause death in our lives it costs death. Paul tells us in Romans 6:23 that because of our sin, we were all destined to pay sin s cost with our very lives, living forever apart from the God who loves us. But God made a better way for us. He sent His Son Jesus to pay the cost for our sin and to set us free from death. He offers this freedom to everyone who will come to Him. The spirit of the age declares that Christ is soft on sin, ambiguous about sin but sin is costly. Sin is deadly. God hates sin because He is holy, He is just, For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. my journal 10 Romans 6:23

and He loves us. God knows that sin destroys us, and this is why He sent Jesus to set us free from it. This is the God we preach the God of power and might who breaks the chains of sin. His power can set the captives free. His power can liberate anyone from the tyranny of sin, shame, and addiction. He is the only One who can heal and restore. When you encounter someone who believes that sin isn t serious, ask God to give you the opportunity to help them see that sin has a consequence. Ask God to use you to communicate the only solution Christ s forgiveness. And despite how the conversation goes, continue to pray for that person, because sometimes seeing Truth is a process. But God is tenacious. He wants everyone to come home to Him. MY J O U R N A L june 2014

k4 W e P r e a c h C h r i s t J o u r n a l w e e The Spirit of Truth Paul warned us about the spirit of the age that permeates our culture and seeks to modify the message of Christ. Whether dressed in the form of relative truth, moral tolerance, self-improvement, or otherwise, its goal is the same: to keep people away from Jesus, the only way to salvation. But we can stand with Paul and believers throughout the ages and preach Christ. We can tell people about His free offer of salvation how He longs for everyone to be set free from sin, so much so that Jesus gave His own life to pay its cost. We can tell people how God hates sin and how He is the only one who has the power to restore our lives. God is infinitely good, redeeming us from the deepest of pits. We have such good news to share with our seeking world! The beautiful thing about preaching Christ is that we don t do it alone. Christ Himself helps us share His message of love and forgiveness through His Spirit, through His Word, and with His heart. Read John 14:16-18. Before Jesus gave His life, rose from the dead, and went back to sit at the Father s right hand, He promised that He would not leave His disciples to walk through this world alone. He promised to ask the Father to send His Spirit the Spirit of Truth. And He did. God s Spirit now lives in His disciples He lives in us. He is our advocate, and will be with us forever (John 14:16). The Spirit of Truth who lives in us will give us everything we need to combat the spirit of the age. As we walk closely with God through His Spirit, He will lead us and guide us. As we read His Word and live by His Spirit, He will illuminate Truths that speak into our situations and our relationships. As we have conversations with people, He will give us words to speak that will penetrate their hearts. And as we spend time with Him on a regular basis, He will mold our hearts to His. We And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever the Spirit of truth. John 14:16-17 my journal 12

will be more prepared to respond when we see the influence of the spirit of the age in our own lives and in the lives of others. God knows us inside and out, and because He is out to squelch the spirit of the age with the goodness of His love, He will give us the words, the insights, and the right opportunities to co-labor with Him in doing so. When Christ returns in glory, the spirit of the age will be silenced once and for all. At that time, everyone will bow to Jesus; there will be no doubt about what is true He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. As we preach Christ, we can help make that day even more joyous, with even more hearts celebrating and rejoicing before His throne. MY J O U R N A L june 2014 3

REPORT If we look at the world through the lens of the Gospel, we will see that God can move in the most hopeless nations and darkest eras of history. This month, we want to share with you how God is moving in the midst of the largest refugee crisis in history. What is the Syrian refugee crisis? In March 2011, anti-government protests in Syria spiraled into a violent civil war that has displaced over 9 million people. With a rising death toll of over 150,000 Syrian lives, the conflict has left millions of Syrians with no choice but to flee. Over 2 million Syrians have fled their home country as a result of the Syrian civil war. The U.N. is predicting that the number of Syrians fleeing the country will double by the end of the year, making it the largest refugee crisis in world history. These 2 million refugees are pouring into neighboring countries with limited resources and infrastructure to support them. But there is good news God is moving in the midst of the turmoil. As millions of Muslim refugees pour into bordering towns, churches in neighboring countries like Jordan and Lebanon are opening their doors. Recently, Dr. Michael Youssef and Joshua Youssef were able to visit one of these churches. The church said when we arrived there, You don t need to go to the refugee camp the church is packed with people looking for help, Dr. Youssef explains. Many said, If all this misery happened so we can come here and share about Christ, then it s worth it. The Body of Christ is responding to those looking for the hope, peace, and comfort that only Christ can give. God is opening doors for ministry and He has opened some of them to Leading The Way. We have an opportunity to help. Through our many relationships on the ground, Leading The Way has the opportunity to reach border towns in Syria s neighboring countries. Over the last few months, we have been my journal 14

working to mobilize teams to distribute Leading The Way Navigators to refugees in these areas. These solar-powered radios provide access to the Word of God and Biblical teachings in remote regions and areas hostile to the Gospel. In addition to distributing Navigators to Syrian refugee camps, we are continuing to see the impact of Leading The Way programming in the Middle East. Earlier in the year, we received several reports like this from THE KINGDOM SAT: A 52-year-old Syrian refugee living in Lebanon wants to learn about the Christian faith. We have scheduled meetings with him in Beirut. Someone from Kurdistan shared with us that after the civil war in Syria, he found so much love from Christians around him, starting from Syria and then at the refugee camp in Turkey and then in France. He does not consider himself Muslim anymore. He is reading his Kurdish Bible. He feels close to Jesus and asked us for prayer. The instability of world governments reminds us that it is ultimately Christ s government that will reign. Although we cannot offer solutions to this nation in crisis, we can proclaim that Jesus is the King of kings, the Prince of Peace, and the ultimate refuge for the refugee. We can continue to put God s Truth into the hands of those who need it. Join us. We serve a gracious God who is not limited by finances, geography, or resources and He loves to respond to the prayers of His children. As Leading The Way distributes Navigators to Syrian refugees, pray for the Gospel to go forth in these Syrian refugee camps. Thank you for your support as we continue this vital outreach effort in the Middle East. If you have not yet partnered with us, would you consider giving to Leading The Way this month? We hope you will join us in our ongoing outreach to 190 countries in 23 languages. JUNE MATCHING CHALLENGE This month, when you give to Leading The Way, your gift will be doubled through our June Matching Challenge. Join us as we close our fiscal year with this special giving opportunity. May God be glorified as together we proclaim His Truth to billions worldwide! june 2014 5

Very valuable and meaningful things are filling my soul every day. Thank you! ~ Russia Your program has strengthened me in walking through life when it is tough. I was once losing all hope and wanted to kill myself, but God gave me a joy through what you said in the program. Please keep me in your prayers. Thank you. ~ Indonesia Haidar is an Iraqi convert. In 2005, he became a Christian after seeing the terror in Islam. After his conversion, he travelled to Syria to be able to worship the Lord freely in 2007. After the war took place in Syria, Haidar returned to Iraq. His parents are against his faith, but his wife supports him. Haidar contacted THE KINGDOM SAT for help to grow in faith by requesting Christian literature for him and his children so that they will be able to know the Savior. Please pray for Haidar and his family along with all Iraqi Christians. ~ Iraq it again on your website as soon as I get home tonight to glean as much as possible from it. ~ United States Your programs are talking every day to my fears and my faith is increasing. We live in times of uncertainty, but listening to your programs is helping me face tomorrow. You are teaching me how to have peace in the storms of my life. Being a father of teenagers, your program is teaching me how to leave my worries to God and to lift my children in prayer before Him. ~ Albania The Navigator tells me so much about Jesus. Through this Navigator I understand God s heart and it has strengthened my faith. ~ Indonesia I listened to part two of Dr. Youssef s message, Know Where You Stand, on the local Christian station on the drive home from softball one night. This message shook me to the core. It really challenged me out of my apathy. I plan on watching june 2014 7

F R A N K LY S P E A K I N G Expanding Our Reach Frank Patterson As we approach the end of our fiscal year here at Leading The Way, I want to share with you some of our current focuses and thank you for your involvement in our work here. Your prayer and financial support have been essential in growing our worldwide evangelistic efforts. This year, we have expanded our international reach. Through new subtitled Indonesian broadcasting and the addition of Tagalog (Philippines), Sinhala (Sri Lanka), and Japanese to our dual-language program, we are finding more and more opportunities to share Christ in Asia. We are also expanding our global Navigator distribution. These rugged, easy-to-use devices provide hours of Dr. Michael Youssef s messages in English and a corresponding language. Each unit can play privately or by an external speaker for group meetings, making Biblical messages available not just to individuals but entire families and communities. These solar-powered units can be taken to the most remote parts of the world. The content of the Navigators has been a great encouragement and is a fitting supplement to radio and television broadcasting. However, most important is that true to his convictions, Dr. Youssef continues to proclaim the true Gospel of Christ without compromise throughout the world. The vehicles through which he is able to do this whether television, radio, or other means are all made possible through your support. Without your steadfast prayers and financial gifts, the efforts of Dr. Youssef and Leading The Way would not be possible. This month, as you prayerfully consider your role in Leading The Way s mission, I pray you would take the unique opportunity to participate in our June Matching Challenge, where gifts given to Leading The Way in June are matched by generous friends of the ministry. This is a wonderful opportunity to double your investment in the ministry. As we close out this fiscal year, we ask that you pray for the success of not only the efforts mentioned above, but all the other soul-winning programs of Leading The Way across the globe. Thank you again for your continued prayers and support. Frankly speaking, Frank Patterson 1.800.538.7677 giving@leadingtheway.org my journal 18

Simple Truth In the days of the old Russian Empire, the Christian faith was widespread. It is recorded that over a century ago, there were more than 50,000 Russian Orthodox churches in Russia. But after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, Communism set out to destroy religion eventually confiscating church properties, persecuting believers, and propagating atheism in the schools. During these days of transition, a Communist leader appeared in one of the small countryside villages. He gathered the villagers for a town meeting and lectured for nearly an hour on the virtues of Communism. After his wordy and philosophical speech, he turned to the village s Christian minister. With an air of contempt, the Communist said, I will give you five minutes to reply. Walking up to the platform, the minister responded, I do not need five minutes only five seconds. As he faced the villagers, the minister gave the traditional greeting we hear so often around Easter: The Lord is risen! And the villagers thundered back: He is risen indeed! We can try to use logic and philosophy to defend our faith. We can use debate techniques and clever words. But nothing has more impact than the simple Truth: Jesus Christ is not a dead man in a tomb but a risen, living God of victory! P.O. BOX 20100 ATLANTA, GA 30325
