INTRODUCTION The records of the Columbia, Missouri, Rotary Club, District 605, which contain correspondence, meeting minutes, financial records, newsletters, publicity material, membership records, activities, conference material, and photographs. DONOR INFORMATION The records were donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Charles G. Gibbens on 19 April 1972 (Accession No. 0934). An addition was made to the University of Missouri on 18 February 2002 by the Columbia Rotary Club through Adolf Schroeder (Accession No. 5776). ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH Early in the year 1922 efforts undertaken by the Rotary Club of St. Louis to establish a rotary club in Columbia met with favorable response by a group of 25 Columbia business and professional men. This group selected three of its members, Joe Somerville, Berry McAlester and Frank Rollins as an organizational committee. The committee called the first meeting to be held at noon on January 26 at the Daniel Boone Tavern for organizational purposes. A board of directors was elected consisting of: F.B. Rollins, J.W. Hudson, J.R. Somerville, E.J. McCaustland, W.E. Smith, and F.W. Dearing. The board then elected the following officers: president, J.W. (Jay) Hudson: vice-president, F.B. (Bing) Rollins: treasurer, W.E. (Emmett) Smith; secretary, F.W. (Frank) Dearing. Two weeks later, on February 10 an installation meeting was held. Rotarians from Jefferson City, Mexico, Moberly, Sedalia, and St. Louis entertained and instructed the Columbia Rotarians. Hi Martin of St. Louis served as toastmaster. However, it was not until April 14 that charter night was held. Due to poor weather, no guests attended, except Ross Burns, governor of the 17 th District, and Hi Martin. With the receipt of its charter the Columbia club officially became Club Number 1114. At this time 28 members were considered charter members. Their names are as follows: Orville M. Barnett, William C. Bowling, Walter H. Braselton, Henry A. Collier, Frank W. Dearing, Charles W. Digges, John Carleton Jones, Edgar D. Lee, Frank W. Leonard, Berkeley Estes, W.W. Garth, William J. Hetzler, Robert E. Lee Hill, Jay W. Hudson, D. Barton Robnett, C.B. Rollins Jr., Frank B. Rollins, Alfonso Johnson, Berry McAlester, E.J. McCaustland, Thomas McHarg, Frederick B. Mumford, W.B. Nowell, James S. Rollins, W. Emmett Smith, Joseph R. Somerville, J.E. Thorton, James M. Wood.
